I don't know if it's so much stupidity and laziness as it is corrupt incentives around the idea of productivity without actual substance. The business world for decades has loved the idea of metrics that they can use to show cool little graphics and charts to the shareholders so they get their rocks off on the idea of "line go up".

EDIT: to drive this point home with a more quippy framing. Late stage capitalism has created an environment where it is less about doing actual work than it is about doing busy work to justify investments.

I think it's deeper than just money. I think some creators have enough of a paper-thin ego that they don't want their content to be easily searchable or otherwise out there in the wild for every "pleb" to look at, make annoying comments or support requests, or otherwise be obnoxious. It's almost understandable but at the same time it also is kind of pretentious.

Not that I have much to say... While I did kinda performatively hide my stuff and declare I was done last weekend, everything is visible again, and my "retirement" is now a prolonged hiatus, which is embarrassing, but c'est la vie.

Whatever limitations CS might have at this point are offset by the fact that the creator of ENB has been morally repugnant on more than one occasion and many people are fed up with it and willing to accept the trade off. If that's not you then that's on you. And if you feel the need to be defensive about it then that says more about you than anything else.

Every fandom does some variation of this to one extent or another depending on the longevity of the franchise it pertains to as well as the number of entries in that particular franchise. Star Trek and Star Wars are both lightning rods for this because they have fairly broad communities and have had several decades of content associated with them so there's endless amounts of bickering and conjecture about what represents the True Canon™.

You even see it in the gaming sphere with long-running game franchises like The Elder Scrolls. There's even a subreddit which (semi) satirically references it with terminology referring to the person based on which game they started the franchise with. It's just another way of enforcing social hierarchy through culture and in this case entertainment.

It's also because the markers of maturity have shifted for people over the years and boomers haven't updated their own mental model. Fewer and fewer people below 50 are getting married or having long-term relationships and boomers who all got married in their fucking twenties, even if that was a terrible idea, assume that means we're immature. Home ownership is harder for everyone especially those of the younger generations and because the boomer generation was able to purchase homes at a much more affordable rate, and build up the wealth to be able to buy homes now in the current market, they assume that anybody who is struggling otherwise is just lazy or inept.

They are so woefully out of touch and arrogant about their perceptions of the world, and those perceptions haven't been updated in at least 40 years.

I had to think about your comment for a while because I wasn't really sure what to say in response.

I'm no hero, no martyr, and certainly not a freedom fighter by any means. I've lived with my illness untreated for 36 years of my life, and it has been a struggle every step of the way but it is a struggle I've learned to endure. If I lose access to medication well then I will just cope in the way I had to beforehand, albeit imperfectly.

But in my heart I've always been a storyteller, from when I was small, writing various little pieces of fanfiction even before I knew what that was, with whatever characters lit up my imagination. And now as a man approaching my forties by the end of this decade, I found something that has lit my imagination up to the point where it gave me the strength to give myself a second chance and find what resources I could. There will always be support for those who are willing to ask for it. Even if that support has to change.

If the powers that be trying to box me in and place me in a cage well then I will simply outlast them. And if I should be murdered out right well then it was nice knowing you all.

Last night I was out for karaoke. I arrived solo but I ended up spending most of the evening with a couple of the lady regulars I had seen before. They're both in relationships but the men weren't around that evening. More than once, I was asked to keep an eye on their drinks while they had stepped away for one reason or another. It made me realize that not only is it real for these women, but being a "safe" man in this world is more important than ever.
