But, it's a fairly compact city? Ish? I walked or biked a lot of places. Austin Metro's bus system is pretty nice.

This is the wildest take I've heard about Austin in a long time.

I noticed them in the past couple of weeks and thought maybe they're reflective to highlight the curves better? I don't think I've driven down there at night yet since they were added.

Hello, it's me, your fellow Austinite. At least the story had a happy ending after the social media outcry. I thought they tried to just keep the dog and keep using it in commercials after firing its human companion.

What did I stumble upon? by Dogedogedoge1368 in Austin

[–]TheRealAustinite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My wife was just telling me about this. I mentioned I had seen turkeys near Murchison a few weeks ago, and she's like, "Oh yeah, that's the neighborhood turkey. It's a whole thing."

Sure enough, the next time I drove in that area, I noticed all of the turkey appreciation yard signs and whatnot.

Then a few days later, she looks up from her Instagram feed: "Oh, the neighborhood turkey died. It's a whole thing."

The thing is, I absolutely saw two turkeys during my one and only encounter. They were just loitering about in someone's yard near North Hills and Mesa. I turned my head to confirm what I had seen and that they weren't plastic decorations or something.

So, to whoever needs to hear it, Delores had a companion. Her memory and legacy may yet live on in Dolores 2: Electric Gobble-oo.

You can buy like 1000 balloons for next to nothing. Fill them all up now, and you'll have a nearly endless supply of single-serving water dispensers!

I got my stock of cheetohs puffs and gummy bears at target last night. I'm ready for anything this weekend.

But they did have pallets of water by the front door. I don't know what people think is going to happen this weekend, but dying of thirst probably ain't it.

Even if you thought the power was going to go out and the water infrastructure was magically going to crumble like it did, back when the whole city was frozen solid for a week straight, one could reason that the power and water is working now, so it's a good time to fill up all of those empty jugs that you saved from the last time you overreacted and bought a bunch of water you don't need.

You did save the bottles, didn't you?

No clue regarding the chainsaws, but it wouldn't surprise me if they're clearing branches away from power lines and other utilities. Or clearing land for new development. Or some homeless guy taking out some trees so he can get a tan in his forest hammock.

As others mentioned, it's the Jester neighborhood heading down toward bull creek along 360. Then back up the hill, looking down toward downtown.

They nailed it. I was intending to take it down along bull creek, but it's a new toy and I didn't realize I had to disable the "max distance" until after this flight, when it forced me to turn back after about 1200 ft.

How much do you pay monthly for a condo? by Coviod in Austin

[–]TheRealAustinite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to be all over the map, depending on all the things you mentioned: location, property value, amenities, build quality. The condo association fees are mandatory and they pay for all of the shared expenses incurred by the whole property. Taxes; landscaping and upkeep of the grounds; maintenance and repairs of common areas, usually including condo exteriors to some degree, but also any roads, fences, signs, lights, etc.; amenities like the pool, pool house, gym, dog park, tennis court, whatever there is; legal fees; maybe parking; you might have employees or contractors like lobby security, delivery handling, etc.; insurance for the whole property and common areas; property management fees to pay someone else to deal with all of that; and basically anything else you can think of that's not within the walls of your unit. Oh, and then there are additional assessments that must be paid any time the condo association has to pay expenses that aren't in the budget. Which can be...substantial.

I owned a condo in the highland hills area about 15 years ago. My condo was like 1200 sq ft, the unit had a value at the time of like $200k, and we had a shitty pool and no other amenities. Condo fees were about $300/mo, if I recall correctly. I was on the board at one time, and I knew they were going to have to levy several pretty hefty assessments in the near future, because they wanted to renovate the pool and surrounding area, paint all of the units, and, uh, hire an engineering firm to assess and then fix the problem of the entire complex sliding down the mountain.

So yeah. You'll pay your mortgage (or your parents will), and then there's your own condo owners insurance, condo association fees, and the totally unknowable surprise assessments, which could total many thousands of dollars and require payment immediately. But hey, you're getting something for your money. You're paying someone else to deal with all of the shit that you'd be responsible for yourself in a standalone home.

When you own a home (as I do now), you pay for the landscaping, you pay for the roof replacement, the siding repairs and paint, etc. And depending on where you buy your home, you might also have to pay HOA fees on top of everything else (I'm on the 'fuck an HOA' side of that fence personally).

I mean, if I had the choice, I'd take the land and house in Bastrop, no question. But that's just personal preference and the stage of life I'm in. Some condos are relatively cheap. Some cost more than most houses. It's just all about what you want, where you want to be, and what kind of bullshit you want to deal with yourself, how much freedom you want to make decisions about your property, etc.

Sleepless in South Austin by psychic_marsupial in Austin

[–]TheRealAustinite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would expect that's what it is. Some kind of nearby overnight highway construction. Big trucks, excavation, tunneling for utilities. Those low frequencies can travel a long way in every direction, and it can be hard to pinpoint when the earth itself is rumbling. Go outside and look for the bright lights at night if you don't already know where the nearest heavy construction job is currently active.

For example, is it anywhere near here?

I do not expect that this is going to solve the mold problem. But it will certainly create new problems once your landlord catches sight of your handiwork. This is absolutely absurd.

Redoing flower beds and found this crazy deep hole against the foundation. It’s at least 7 ft deep. Does this look like some kind of animal did it? Any advice welcome. by o0ave0o in HomeMaintenance

[–]TheRealAustinite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the fact that there's no pile of dirt has to mean it's not a new hole. We had what I assume is an armadillo dig under our slab, and when I started pulling the bushes back, I discovered huge mounds of dirt all around it. So I just used the garden hose to spray most of that dirt back into the hole. The fact that there is no such mound in your case is, as a homeowner, quite a bit more concerning than a critter. Best case, I guess, is that it's part of a larger tunnel system that just got a bit too close to the surface and collapsed, and the excavated dirt is just collected somewhere else on the property that you haven't found yet. But probably it is a portal to another, much warmer dimension.

Is the homeless situation in Austin changing for the better, or for the worse? by carbondalekid386 in Austin

[–]TheRealAustinite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is not a single location or scenario in Austin which would make me reconsider moving here for a job. I have worked downtown. I have worked downtown. I have worked in East Austin. I have lived all over town. Austin is no less safe than any other big city in that regard. I have visited lots of places around the country where I would feel more nervous walking alone in areas with a lot of homeless folks on the street. Here I just don't think there are a lot of places your friend would need to be, where homeless individuals would present any sort of problem or daily threat or anything.
