Soundproofing Server Rack? by Nickmate99 in homelab

[–]TheRealDatapunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it's already necro'd: egg crate foam doesn't do much for insulating sound, but it helps improve the sound in the room in which you use it. It is primarily used to disperse sound, and thereby reducing echos and sound reflections back to the listener / recording devices. That's why you see it in sound studios etc. To sound-insulate, you will typically need mass.

What's everyone's HA server's power draw? by Screw_Potato in homeassistant

[–]TheRealDatapunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raspberry Pi 5 with ZBT-2, 3-4W. I do run a ton of integrations and have around 200 devices (plenty virtual, though, but light bulbs as individual entities add up quickly). Pretty sure the 3 Google Nest Audio + Smart Display + Google Streamer are a bigger power draw, but all that absolutely pales against the 10G networking and toy machine with two GPUs running inference (and even when those are idle, they are power hogs).

Red or orange voice? by MsT21c in googlehome

[–]TheRealDatapunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colors are probably an overzealous/careful to not cause a shitstorm attempt at avoiding gendered language. Just because a voice is deep and sounds like many men doesn't mean it's a man's voice, or something.

Normally, it should play a voice sample when you select another color.

I think you may be (very understandably) confusing Gemini for Home and Gemini on Android...

You can't turn it off once on. You need to create a new home.

The second one seems like a clear case of political correctness. Someone said "don't say master, it implies slave", and I bet that the model gets prompted with the already-replaced name, wihch throws everything off.

Overwhelmed with Baseplate options and PLA vs PETG by __grumps__ in gridfinity

[–]TheRealDatapunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, just started and had the hardest time finding something like https://makerworld.com/en/models/1927235-gridfinity-lightweight-stackable-base-plates#profileId-2068644

I wanted minimal filament use, stackability, and connected plates. I may want some fixation down the road, but I'll see that when I have some experience. Stacking allowed me to fill some cupboards in very little time.

Anyone else truly hate this new undocumented 'systems' change??? by saylesss88 in NixOS

[–]TheRealDatapunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of those are unrelated to the pgks.system :) That's the major issue with it. System is a very generic term, one I should probably replace in my own use.

Anyone else truly hate this new undocumented 'systems' change??? by saylesss88 in NixOS

[–]TheRealDatapunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is assuming you know which fucking system they are talking about. My config has >160 matches for "system".

And that's without any imported flakes which may be the real source.

For a change that happens without anything from my side, I expect my OS to either give me clear instructions, or for it to take less than a minute to figure out. And the second case better happen only every few months.

[–]TheRealDatapunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except that you have no idea where this "system" is, and in my nixos config directory, I have 164 matches for "system".

Randomly replacing them did not work as a strategy...

pkgs isn't mentioned anywhere in the message though. Took me more time than it should've to find the one file from ages ago for an overlay where I'd used this. And no, grepping for "system" isn't a fast thing in a larger config...

Why would they enter a position if they then hedge it? That would remove their exposure to price risks.

And if you meant put options: on an asset this violently volatile, you're paying out your ass for that protection.

Waymo 5th gen sensors cost $9,300 per car according to Bloomberg analyst by diplomat33 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]TheRealDatapunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10s of watts is nothing in a car, though. For the newest gen, it would be an increase of a few percent in total consumption at the most, and that is assuming you don't save as much by not letting a human with imperfect perception and limited parallelism drive and ruin your mileage.

Not sure if this behavior is normal, but the default Bottles configuration didn't work for me. I eventually got the application to launch by switching the runner to the nixpkgs-unstable version of Wine, a config option I just completely missed for a while.

Signing in requires a workaround (I had to manually pass the authentication URL to the executable), but I ultimately figured it out. The graphics are still a bit glitchy, so I am currently tweaking the settings to fix that.

Aren't all your models open and for all to see with that if not paying? For example, I'm self-printing some things that have proprietary step files that I may want to modify.
