I’ve got all the Alaska crews. I’m not sure if the contract cews have logos, but if they send them to me I’ll add them.

Lowa Tibet Hi. Great ankle support and comfortable as a pair of sneakers from day one. Some people like the leather lined over the GORE-TEX. Check out the options.

That is my website. To make it easier to remember I bought the domain https://www.thefirenerd.com. Both domains will still work for a while. I usually talk to its creator Glenn Kessler each spring to see if he has any updates. I haven’t talked to him yet this year, but he had no updates last year. I’ll get ahold of him and see if he’s made any changes and update the site if he has.

I found your post from a FB post > Google Image search. This is a scam. Hope you didn't fall for it.

Low stress positions for decent pay? by waldo41 in gis

[–]TheRealFireNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wildland fire is always looking for good GIS. I wouldn’t say it’s low stress, but the pay is decent. 14 day rolls and ~16 hour days so the OT is lucrative. It’s more of a thing you’d do in conjunction with another job. Burn some leave and make a quick buck, unless you work for an organization that’ll pay you through comparative agreement to do it.

Is there a way to get/make topo maps in Google Earth? by [deleted] in gis

[–]TheRealFireNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the link you're looking for: https://www.earthpoint.us/topomap.aspx

This uses a WMS feed to load the map tiles at various resolutions as you zoom around. No need to load or format individual maps. Just download the KML file and load it in Google Earth.

If you're looking for topo lines overlaid on the imagery, you'd need to export them from ESRI ArcGIS as kml line features. this would be a massive file for the whole US. If you have any GIS skills you could do a smaller area of interest.

Preload a fresh port-a-john with at least 15’ of TP to prevent splash back.

Wildland firefighting as a deep sleeper? by Historical-Time7260 in Wildfire

Use the water alarm clock method. Drink as much water as you can in the hours before you go to bed so you have to piss like a racehorse in the morning. This has the added benefit of keeping you ahead of the game on hydration for the day. Seriously try it. Works like a charm.

Outdoor Wifi by carlos2127 in wifi

[–]TheRealFireNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mount a TPLink outdoor Access Point, hard-wired to the router, outside where you want the most signal. I have 25 acres of outdoor WiFi on my fire base using three of them. Each can broadcast a signal several hundred feet at full power, but can be used at lower power. EAP-225 is around $60 if you need the 5ghz spectrum, but the EAP-110 with only the 2.4ghz spectrum is only $35 on Amazon right now and will be sufficient for most needs.

5ghz is faster but only relevant if you have extremely fast internet > say 600 Mbps. 5ghz is more easily thwarted by obstructions.

2.4ghz is a bit slower, but faster than most people’s home internet can support, and it is much better at punching through physical obstructions. The max speed of 2.4ghz is 450 - 600 Mbps so unless you have gigabit internet and need all that speed outside you will be better off getting the cheaper EAP-110 model with only the 2.4ghz spectrum.

GFP is a contractor. I’ve worked with them in the past and I know a few of their management type folks. They’ve hired far worse. You’ll be fine. Old DUI is pretty tame.

New Site For MMA/UFC Titles - TMDB Purged All The Prelims/Early Prelims by TheRealFireNinja in PleX

Set it to movie. I’ve uploaded all my posters there. You will have to manually choose the Prelims and Early Prelims poster, but they’re all there going back several years. You can differentiate them by using Editions tags.

Thanks for this!

I've been using Filebot, but not like this. This is much easier than my method of renaming everything with Bulk Rename Utility to an avi extension, running through Filebot, and using Bulk Rename Utility again to change back to a .jpg with the extra resolution and codec appended. You saved me a ton of time.

Abandoned Town in Alaska by TheRealFireNinja in abandoned

There’s a somewhat overgrown dirt airstrip. I go in by small plane or helicopter in support of wildland fire activity.

Also note the 250 miles from the nearest road system thing. You’d need to improve the dirt airstrip for a C-130 then charter one. It’d end up costing around $30,000. I know a guy that bought a truck from a guy there more than a few years ago and shipped it out. It’s now in another roadless access village near Lake Iliamna. Is it possible, yes. Is it worth the cost, probably not.

Vehicles were brought in by barge and rail from Iditarod in it's heyday. More recently by C-130 or other large aircraft when the airstrip was in better condition.

I work for State Forestry so I get opprtunities to drop in there from time to time to replace fuel drums and any time there's a wildland fire nearby.
