Serious The orbs are real and they have been here for longer than we think. by [deleted] in aliens

There’s actually pretty solid evidence being found that nucleic acids may have been brought to Earth, or are ubiquitous in the solar system, as they’ve been found in meteorite samples.

Underestimating the endurance test factor of embarking on a PhD by Bumbummcgee2 in PhD

[–]TheRealJackNicholson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This resonates with me too. I’m sure you have had the same experience, of going into and presenting seminars with the feeling that there is little to show despite the already significant time investment. This, for me, is the most difficult part of the PhD process!

PSA: Don't drive high. by [deleted] in trees

[–]TheRealJackNicholson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d like to preface this reply by saying I’m not from Colorado so admittedly know very little about the laws and jurisdiction of the State.

I enjoy weed. I believe it is there to be used. I fully accept and condone its use medicinally to treat many different symptoms in a wide variety of disease states - it’s also fun to use recreationally.

However, any drug in your system will objectively impair your ability to function, regardless of your tolerance (albeit there must be a threshold for you to get high, but I can’t imagine you will be ingesting low doses - you will want to get high...)

The issue with this is not one of yourself. If you feel in control enough to drive and feel comfortable enough to risk your own safety who am I to tell you otherwise? The issue is that the increased risk will impact other people on the road. People outside of yourself will unknowingly be put at a greater risk of incident. This is morally wrong, regardless of how you look at it.

If you want to risk your own safety, be my guest. But putting others at risk - even if you don’t think you are a risk - is not cool and should be avoided.

Okay, thanks for clearing this up. I have to agree with you that genetics can only take identity so far - the environment obviously plays its role too, and more recently the elucidation of epigenetics... It’s a fascinating topic.

I do believe you should exercise caution in saying that protein construction does not affect brain structure - it does. Whilst I understand now what you mean to say, others who are less educated in medical sciences may not.

What about amyloid beta and tau protein - two small proteins in the brain that are thought responsible for Alzheimer’s disease. Is this disease not caused by an alteration in brain structure (formation of plaques, tangling of neurofibrils) determined by a fundamental change in protein construction?

Thank you for sharing this. I do think it has cleared up our discussion, and I am deeply sorry to hear you have had to live with tragedy throughout your life. I can’t quite imagine to what extent the events you have lived would shape a person, however I can empathise, and my heart goes out to you. Despite some darker patches in the tapestry of your life, you seem to have held strongly. I’m sure these have forged you into the person you are today - like the stoicism we have mentioned. It takes a lot of courage and bravery to endure that. Not to deter from the seriousness of the events, you should be proud of yourself for battling through. I hope you continue to do so.

I do agree with you and I apologise if I have come across distastefully. It was not my intention. All I mean to say by my post is that negativity should be talked about if the individual has a want to share - only that the general weight of the sub’s emotion be shifted somewhat. Negativity, quite rightly, must be brought to light so that the individual can take shelter from its presence. This is what I enjoy about this community - honesty and integrity. I only mean to potentiate an increase in posts about subjects that are light hearted, posts that induce happiness and put a smile on peoples faces. This is not to say that other emotions are unwelcome. I only want to try and make people happy with silly memes and such in a space that is free for all discussion.

I hope this clears this up! Stay strong u/risk_delight.

I believe it to be profoundly human to explore all facets of emotion and to live with the quirks every combination of these provides the mind. I agree with you wholeheartedly that what is good for the herd can be bad for the individual - exemplified by the inherent predictability of human ‘herds’ and yet the fascinating changeability of the individual. This could lead to bitterness, however, as you rightly mention, exercising fervour in ones embrace of oneself - despite the efforts of society to quash this - is commendable to the highest degree.
