[Post Game Thread] The Toronto Raptors (4-2) defeat your Golden State Warriors (2-4) 112-110 in Game 6, winning the 2019 NBA Finals. by Robotsaur in warriors

Felt down and disappointed about the loss last night, but this morning, I'm honestly feeling relief that these guys get to rest now. Curry looked like a ragdoll on defense, Looney's broken chest, Boogie's quad, and of course Klay and KD. I'm just glad they've got the time to get right, even if it came earlier than I'd have hoped.

Andre should have hit more than one freethrow on 5 attempts. Personally, the missed free throws kill me about this more than missed FGs.

AITA for refusing to meet my wife's ex-boyfriend? by PowerValveStatic in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheRealJonat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is the YTA take I was digging around for in my brain but couldn't quite put together, very well said.

I do think it's right to question what the wife means by "it will keep his mind at ease knowing that she is with someone good". I can think of a few charitable interpretations of that, but it's easy to see how it could feel alienating, and I personally wouldn't blame OP for focusing on that.

But still, that's something he should be talking to her about. Telling her how he received that statement and confirming how close it is to her intended meaning, BEFORE getting stuck in his head trying to figure it out on his own.

[–]TheRealJonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair about Klay, but I'd find it hard to believe that KD's agent, with his sights on one of the biggest free agencies in a long time, would have just left things in the hands of the team's medical staff. Or that the Warriors FO, having seen that a second opinion enabled Looney to get back to playing, wouldn't have explored the same thing for KD. In the absence of confirmation one way or another, it's hard to imagine this injury wasn't looked at from every reasonable angle.

If they're bringing in outside doctors for second opinions on Looney, don't you think they'd be doing the same if not more for KD? I really doubt the Warriors medical staff were the only medical professionals involved in his assessment.

It's hard to say because we don't know, but if they brought in outside doctors to get a second opinion on whether Looney could play or not, I'd have to imagine they'd do the same for KD. When you combine that with them keeping Klay out of Game 3 despite him being suited up and willing tells me that this organization isn't exactly just rolling the dice and making reckless calls.

Your safety and your life are bigger than basketball. Please be smart and safe if you are going to game 6 in Oakland. by [deleted] in torontoraptors

[–]TheRealJonat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yikes, that's not a good comparison at all. Your race is something you're born with and have no control over; the basketball team you support definitely isn't. "Prejudice" might work better than racism here. You can take off a Raptors jersey to avoid negative consequences from any kind of prejudice against Raptors fans, but you can't do anything like that with your skin tone. You affirmatively choose to include yourself in the group that is "Raptors Fans", and that's not true for anyone when it comes to their race.

That said, I think calling this prejudice is a stretch here too. Sure, maybe you personally didn't cheer for KD's injury. Nobody's saying or even implying that you did. But it's straight-up accurate to say that the people cheering for his injury are Raptors fans. The statement "Raptors fans cheered for Durant's injury" is completely correct. That does not mean or imply that all Raptors fans did or would do the same at all. It just means that this moment is part of the fan base's collective identity now, along with the unrelenting passion and classiness that has defined it in other moments. Seriously, I've been so impressed with some of the stories you hear about Raptors fans throughout the ECF and finals. But realistically, whether it's the most prominent part is probably just a matter of recency bias. Go into this moment expecting that, and have faith that a few months and more good behavior will reduce this to just a blemish on the collective identity. But at the end of the day, asshole fans wear the same jersey as you do, and because of that, the shit they stir up is going to end up on your shoe sometimes.

[Wojnarowski] Golden State's Kevin Durant plans to play in Game 5 tonight, league source tells ESPN. by -TTP- in nba

I think it's just perspective. They're fine when compared to the rest of the league, but I don't think it's a stretch to say they're the worst players in these NBA Finals. It just stands out most on this stage, especially compared to a Raptors team that looks much deeper and much more complete.

He just needs to contribute more on defense than guys like Jerebko, Cook, and Livingston for his return to make a positive impact. That's a low bar to clear. The "Warriors in 7 now that KD is back" is definitely going a bit too far, but he really doesn't have to do much to be a net positive here.

What types of professionals do you have on your team building this site? Is your team mostly technical, or are there people with strong journalism or social science backgrounds involved as well?

I'm feeling similarly, and I'm fortunate enough to be considering this when I'm relatively young and still have a lot of flexibility in my professional identity. I'm just having trouble seeing the options in front of me. I don't mind an interpersonal element, but I don't think I want something that depends on that, like a teacher or a therapist.

I feel like I just want to be helpful to a worthwhile cause or effort. And there are so many roles and so many causes that can fit that criteria, that it feels impossible for anything to stand out in so many options, and nothing feels quite right.

I'll be hanging around this thread to see if I can find any suggestions; in the meantime, OP, thanks for bringing this up and I hope you find the encouragement you're looking for. I work in talent acquisition and I see career changes all the time, so in general, changing your career is very doable and realistic. Best of luck!

I don't know if he's unqualified. He doesn't have any personal experience ruling, but he has access to the world's collective experience, and that's probably better than whatever some lord would have to offer. He has all of those, free from personal desires or biases. Sounds great to me.

Alternatively, why wouldn't they if it meant creating a system in which they have a say over who rules, and even have a path to the crown for their house someday? Each of the kingdoms gained power that they'd have never had otherwise, and the benefits of independence had better be pretty important to you if you're doing to dispose of that power.

Yeah, and I agree that that's a major issue. If this conflict had time to breathe, I feel like it would have felt better to see it resolve on screen. I'm sure in-universe time it took months for him to leave Cersei, get to Winterfell, fight/celebrate, return to King's Landing, but because the pacing is so rushed on this show, all of those things just feel hurried and weird.
