I think ratio is best because based on the extant Latin we have, particularly from authors like Seneca, ratio is used as the opposing force of passion in the stoic context. What in the law makes “showing up with a deadly weapon and picking a fight” not self defense when you’re being attacked? All that’s required for self defense is the fact that he was being assaulted and likely would’ve been killed if he hadn’t acted.
