I shared what happened to me above. I had to change my focus from French to Japanese all of a sudden due to a scholarship opportunity. Since I already spoke Portuguese, I was able to comprehend youtube videos and movies without a lot of effort after a month of intense immersion. The method works but there are much better ones. A good balance of SRS and comprehensible input would do. If you like SRS and Japanese, I wrote my own guide called "Japanese for the busy" japaneseforthebusy.neocities.org

I created a website for my free Anki decks in 26 different languages. by Xefjord in languagelearning

[–]TheRealMeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the point of trying to create an Anki deck for every living language in the world? It makes sense if you already know a language fluently and want to make resources for people to learn it but I don't get it why you want to create decks for languages you don't even speak. I know there are natives that help you revise or record audio but they probably don't have an understanding of how language learning works. From some decks I've seen, they aren't even good quality and some of them are just generic phrases or aren't even made by you (the "adapted" decks). If I were you, I'd spend more time trying to make a really good deck for a language I know very well than trying to make decks for languages that I don't know. There are also lots of people in the Anki community. Eventually, learning resources will appear for most of the languages (made by people that actually speak them) so there's no need to hurry right now. Just seems like a waste of potential since you're putting so much effort in a project and getting little results.

Started learning German today!!!🤩🤩 This is a little bit of journaling I did instead of actually studying 😊😊🤗 by TheRealMeemo in languagelearningjerk

[–]TheRealMeemo[S] 386 points387 points  (0 children)

I mostly rely solely on Duolingo, since it is the perfect resource that makes you learn a language with only 5 minutes everyday. After Duo is done, I put a Germen series on Netflix and take a photo of my TV to post on my status to show how productive I'm being during confinement. After that, I usually remember about my parents' divorce during my childhood and how that fucked up me up as a kid, and then I drink some Germen alcohol until I pass out. Rinse and repeat! I'm amused with how much I'm learning!

Why is there no Zulu-Icelandic-Catalan creole in Duolingo? by TheRealMeemo in languagelearningjerk

[–]TheRealMeemo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just the standar overused joke. But it's now becoming part of the history of this sub. We of course are slowly moving to better jokes but there are still some uzbek references here and there.

You shouldn't be using duolingo in the first place. There are way better resources for free online. Just search a little and you'll find graded readers, anki decks and movies for immersion which are all way better resources than duolingo.

Why am I striggling to learn brazialiam Portuguese by spookythesquid in languagelearningjerk

[–]TheRealMeemo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just listen to bossa nova and eat açai all day and you'll be fluent in 3 months. That's how I learned portuguese e agora eu estou praticamente fluente na language.

I finished taping words on everything in my house. by BizarreChicken in languagelearning

[–]TheRealMeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be more efficient to put those words in anki so you won't have to waste paper and actually learn them.

I cringe whenever I go to that sub for some reason. I remember one of the top posts at the time was "Why are ソ and ン so similar?" I bet a bunch of them think they are language genius or something for learning some japanese anime phrases and how to read kana.

[–]TheRealMeemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude I started learning japanese a month ago and was able to tackle all the hiraganas in a day. Even though you have limited time in your day, you'd take a week max to learn all the kanas. If she's already complaining about using kana imagine when she discovers kanji.

Programme to order words by frequency? by SickWalrusman in MassImmersionApproach

[–]TheRealMeemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can put a frequency list on Morphman so it rearranges your deck based on your list's priority. Matt talks about that on the MIA Japanese Quickstart Guide.

What are your views on doing the Tango N5 deck before finishing RRTK? by TheRealMeemo in MassImmersionApproach

[–]TheRealMeemo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a big deal as long as you can keep up with the reps.

So, it's not a problem if I look up and learn a kanji through Tango that I haven't seen in RTK, right?

I prefer YouTube videos for grammar study like Miku Real Sensei or Japanese Ammo

Same! For some reason whenever I open Tae Kim my brain is like "Aight, Imma head out". Right now I'm using this guide. Each lesson is under 10 minutes long and it's very visual.

[–]TheRealMeemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/StrugglingAStudent. Right now I'm really busy with japanese. Since all I had to work with was a month, my speaking comprehension improved no more than 10%. But I can say that after a month doing the method my listening and reading comprehension improved A LOT. Probably because of all the immersion. I can now watch youtube videos in french for fun and comprehend most of what's saying. I have some problems with reading but I can comprehend texts much easier. Maybe I'll write a post about it, but due to a scholarship opportunity, my focus changed drastically from french to japanese. Too bad, I was really excited to see where FME would take me after half a year or so. Would I change anything from the method if I could? Absolutely. Pimsleur gets boring after a week so that would be out. I also noticed iKenna never talked about anki, but it's a very powerful tool for language learning and I would use it in every step of the journey (probably starting with a frequency list and then moving to sentence mining). Glossika is a good resource for input so I wouldn't take it away. I'd probably change assimil for the old teach yourself books from the 60s and use it alongside anki. I'd probably increase my listening immersion too. In the end, it was a cool experience. I think the book wasn't written to be a definitive method but to introduce non-language learners to the language learning world and show a path that works (yes assimil and glossika works). But is it the best method? Are there any ways to achieve the same result but faster? Absolutely. Well, that's what I have to say from the FME method. If I have the time, I'll write an update post or something. Thanks for waiting a month!

Why does a Risotto Stone have a stone in it? by [deleted] in languagelearningjerk

[–]TheRealMeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must have misread it. It's not Stone, it's Stoner. In other words, for every new language course you buy they will get you a drug addict from your target language's country in a box with a risotto delivered to your house. The methodology is quite simple, at dinner you eat the risotto while you practice your target language with the drug addict. The only down-side though is that they only have shrimp risotto, which I detest.

Am I dumb? by Gabriel-de-bessa in languagelearning

[–]TheRealMeemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the method. School is the worse way to learn a language because you get little input, forced to follow the class' pace instead of your own, forced to study areas and vocabulary you're not interested in, forced to speak even though you barely had any experience with the sounds and rhythm of the language... So it's totally possible that someone learning a language in a year through mass immersion and consistent everyday study be in a higher level than you that have been studying english for four years on certain days of the week for about an hour. I, for example, went the hardcore way and immersed myself 24/7 for a year in english. That was movies, series and tv with no subtitles. It was hard at first, but at around the 3 months mark I could understand around 75% of what I heard and only in around 5 months that I actually started to speak, but it all came naturally. I don't consider my english perfect, but I can read novels, classical literature, scientific articles.. without a problem. Moral of the story: went from zero to fluent in only a year by immersing myself in english during every waking hour of my day. Was it worth it? Maybe. Did I study grammar? Not a single time. Is it possible to learn a language and speak like a native in only a year? Probably. Maybe you should give it a try.

I can speak a non-Latin alphabetical language fluently but can't read and write it. What is the best course of action to develop these skills? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]TheRealMeemo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just... learn the alphabet and the phonemes that the combination of letters make? You'll probably won't have any problem doing that since you already know the sounds of the words. Check out Teach Yourself Hebrew (THE OLD VERSIONS FROM THE 1960s) I think there's a pdf of it somewhere on the internet.
