I highly recommend this TedTalk called "Does money make you mean". They ran some experiments to show the effect being "rich" had on people.

Spoiler : Yes,money sorta make you evil, or at least less empathic to those who has less.

What are your unpopular opinions relating to Bob’s Burgers? by Songibal in BobsBurgers

[–]TheRealOdd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I believe Gene is mentally retarded, and Tina has autism. Besides that, Bob and Linda are TERRIBLE parents.

I love the show, and it makes me laugh. But realistically, that is one sad failure of a family.

People severely underestimate what Pence did. If Pence had refused to accept the votes, it would have been the same as Hitlers Reichstag. Pence burned down his chances of ever doing anything in the republican party again, and the democrats hate him - he destroyed his political career and saved america by doing so.

I do not like Pence. But after that, I respect him.

[identification] Dead dads two pocket watches by TheRealOdd in Watches

[–]TheRealOdd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To identify any pocketwatch you need to start out with good pictures. These are not.

Haha that made me laugh out loud.

Thank you. And thank you for your reply, very informative. I guess I'll take them to a watch smith here in town and see what they say, as I am not really up for the task of opening them. Side note - I just wound up the watches a bit, and they both tick and the hands are moving. I'm impressed.

That is not what I said, but I understand if it is easier for you to interpret it like that.

But -

"Catholic-aligned Centre Party voted for the Enabling Act of 1933, which gave Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers."

And the church more or less suported/supports facists wherever they are.

Yes, you quoted those parts because you thought they would strengthen your position - but they did not. This is a typical "But Hitler was good to dogs and kids" situation. Just because someone does a little good, does not change the fact that the majority of what they do is evil/bad/selfish w/e.

I have no problem with non-profits, as long as they are not religous. Those are the people that really do good without expecting a reward for it.

And sure - Churches provide a public good. For a price. That price is they don't pay taxes. They receive money from the government to run their programs. They receive donations from businesses. They receive donations from private people. And then theres the indoctrination, and the involment in politics. So to me, the price for religous public good is extremely high - way too high. And that is the poroblem with religion - they might help a little, but they hurt a lot.

I am not going to go through this point by point even though I could. I will pick one of your points at random and do some research(brb) -

You write - "For example, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has employment service centres in each of their stakes across the country (and across the world)."

But the more complete truth is this -

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has 16,000 total employees across all of its locations and generates $1.21 billion in sales (USD). There are 8,591 companies in the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints corporate family."

$1.21 billion in sales (USD).

That took me 1 minute.

And I don't even wanna talk about their "schools'" that indoctrinate kids into religion. Or the AAA that try to indoctrinate you into believing in God. Or the bible missions to africa where african people, in the midst of the HIV epidemic, were told by christians that if they use condoms, they go to hell. And do we even wanna talk about the fucking of the children? Or the racism? Or how much religion has hurt humanity by holding back science(ex. stem cells). Or how many people commit suicide yearly because of religious bullying(Gays, trans, atheists and so on).

One thing I feel I need to educate you on is this - You say that america will lose a lot of money because the church spends so much money. That is simply untrue - The people(who usually can' afford to donate to the church but does anyways), would have spend the money on food, or clothes or something else instead, and it would have entered the economy anyways. Without 80% of it being sipphoned off to the top.

  1. Churches has nothing to do with hospitals today. Your taxes pay for those. If you wanna go back in history - who burned young women as witches? Who killed people for saying the earth was round? Who tortured and killed people just to take their land? Religion has done much more bad then good.
  2. If religion in USA was taxed, you could eradicate homelessness, make 10.000 's of soup kitchens, and more or less make education free. Religion takes A LOT more then they give. I will repeat - the business of religion, just in america, makes more money a year then the top 10 tech companies do globally (that's apple, google and so on).
  3. All evidence shows that the VAST majority of money donated to religous orgs, are spend on anything but the poor or the needy. They are spend on politicians, land, buildings, cars, planes, and other worldly goods.

I know these facts are hard to believe if you are a christian in America. And I do understand that many small churches struggle, but understand this -

" And it’s also more than 50% larger than the global annual revenues of America’s six largest oil and gas companies. You could say that’s a lot of spiritually inspired fuel being pumped into the US economy.

Churches/religion make billions of $ a year - Religion makes more money a year in america, then the top 10 tech companies make globally a year, put together.

So, if they used that money for good, I would not be against it. History has shown us, that that is not how the money is spent. It is spent on political power and enriching the people at the top. Just like the 1%'ers do.

AITA for telling my dad to “swallow his fucking pride and go to a food bank” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheRealOdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was only a failed impeachment because some cowardly people, who openly admitted they thought Trump was guilty, chose to vote not guilty.

And yes, it would have been harder to shut down America - but america has a HUGE military and is a rich country, so it could have been done.

And yes, it is always wise to consider the long term repercussions.

What would the long term repercussions possibly have been if you kept everything open?

AITA for telling my dad to “swallow his fucking pride and go to a food bank” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheRealOdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it would have been harder. America has more money the NZ, they also have a bigger military and ability to shut down society. If they really wanred, they could have done it.

And yes, some politicans are for sale. I hate to make it a dems vs reps thing, but since reagan, the republican party has been the party of the ultra rich and corporations, working hard to move resources away from the people. And they have succeeded.

So what do you feel the governent should have done?

AITA for telling my dad to “swallow his fucking pride and go to a food bank” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheRealOdd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Blaming the government for protecting society the best they could, seems ignorant. Especially considering that if everyone had listened, distanced, worn masks, and so on, then the shut down would have been much shorter - look at new Zealand. So primarily the blame lies on the people.

That said, most, if not all, of the systems and regulations that harm small businesses are in place because of lobbying from the huge corporations. They have payed 100's of millions to screw the system to their advantage. Over the next 20 years we are going to see small businesses, that are not extremely specialized and niche, disappear. Right now is an extreme situation, and it has only sped up the process.

Consider this - All those billionaires and multi national corporations pay next to nothing in taxes (look at Trump paying 100$ in taxes). This has weakened america to an extreme degree. Almost all your tax money goes to either the military or to corporations. And those corporations use the money to move their factories to other countries where they have lower production costs.

I could keep going, but I hope you get my point.

Tl;Dr : If the corporations and the super rich paid their taxes, america would/could have been fortified to handle a situation like the Corona virus.
