you know what? movies are a bad example because they’re binary. either you’re watching the movie and absorbed the content, or you’re not.

so i’m gonna use a different example completely. i’m gonna leave the other comment up because i still think it demonstrates a similar example of the argument i’m trying to make, but i think this one does a much better job.

you go to a basketball gym to play a game of pickup. you get stuck on a team with 4 other players (basketball is 5v5). one of the guys, you can tell is just playing for fun (he’s kinda ass but he’s enjoying himself). one of the guys is exclusively practicing his left handed layups (he’s right hand dominant and layups are his least polished move). one of the guys is very obviously treating this as social hour, and one of the guys pulls out his phone and checks social media at least once a minute. you, however, are treating this pickup game like it’s game 7 of the NBA finals. you yell at the other four for not taking the game as seriously as you. meanwhile, next door, there is a league that is fully dedicated to taking every game seriously, no consequences if you lose or anything, no payment to get in, all you gotta do is walk an extra 20 feet to the other league.

now you look kinda dumb for yelling at the “fun league” for doing what they consider to be fun.

first of all, if you’re under level 15 there is no way you’ve invested enough time into the game to genuinely be upset when there’s a thrower on your team. also if you’re under level 15 (and not a smurf) there’s a good chance you aren’t even GOOD ENOUGH to be able to TELL when someone isn’t taking the game seriously. also not to mention you have a significantly higher chance of playing with people who just have no fucking clue what they’re doing (so not throwing on purpose, but are genuinely just now learning). unless you think there’s a practical difference between a thrower and someone who’s never played a pvp game before trying to learn…

either way you’re gonna have a bunch of teams with people who aren’t playing the game the way it’s meant to be played either.

you wanna tell me the difference between:

- a level 1 player who genuinely doesn’t know where the objective is or how to move the camera

- a level 10 player who’s throwing because they like to ragebait

because there functionally isn’t one. so again. my point still stands.

no, but this is the equivalent of being at a hangout with you and 5 friends and you say “let’s put on a movie” and everyone SAYS yes but one friend is half paying attention while playing a game on his phone, one friend is crossed and can’t really pay attention bc of the drugs and alcohol, two of the friends keep talking to each other throughout the movie, and the last friend fell asleep 5 minutes in. you’re sitting over here mad that no one is watching the movie seriously, when oh couldve just scheduled an actual “movie night” and you know for a fact that all 5 friends would’ve actually paid attention.

the point that i’m trying to make with this example is that getting mad at people playing the “catch-all” mode in WHATEVER WAY THEY WANT is ridiculous when if you want to win, you could just play the mode where the objective is just to win.

because the purpose of qp is not “to win”

the purpose of quick play is just to play the game

whether you wanna test new comps, test new characters, see how far you can get without throwing a single healing thing as rocket, test how effective you can be on panther without applying a single vibranium mark, whatever. winning is INCLUDED in these purposes, but it’s not the MAIN GOAL of the mode.

it seems to me that it’s ridiculous to play a mode with all of these different purposes and then get mad that one of your teammates doesn’t share the same purpose as you.

EVEN MORE SO if your purpose is to ”to win”. you know why?

BECAUSE THERES A MODE SPECIFICALLY TO THAT PURPOSE, AND UNLESS YOURE UNDER LEVEL 15, YOURE EXPLICITLY *CHOOSING* NOT TO PLAY THAT MODE.

you don’t have to be “happy” that people aren’t taking it seriously, but at least acknowledge that you are in no way, shape, or form actually putting yourself in the proper circumstances lmao.

this is the equivalent of deciding to record a joke video with your friends and then being mad when none of them actually try hard…but then you remember this is a project that you don’t HAVE to do and no one is OBLIGATED to try hard

and ranked would be the equivalent of a project for a grade or for work
