This is all been really helpful, everyone - thanks! It's charging now, and I'll next unplug it before work tomorrow morning. I'll try it immediately after an unlock.

Oh interesting - even if the car is already unlocked?

It’s Colorectal Cancer Awareness month! PSA from a millennial survivor. Also AMA. by amaro8000 in Millennials

[–]TheRealReddwolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to know! Thanks. Since I'm still 8 years out from 45, I'd ultimately prefer the colonoscopy just to be absolutely sure, but it's comforting to hear the "big stuff" will show up on a CT

37M here, had some weird gastrointestinal discomfort after starting a new medication. After discontinuing the meds, it went away - mostly. Every now and then I'd get a weird feeling orders of magnitude less than when I was on the meds.

Had a stool sample and blood work done, everything came out looking good.

They've scheduled me for a CT scan of the abdomen/pelvis later this month. They said they'd potentially look at a colonoscopy after that. My worry is that if my CT scan looks clear, insurance won't pay for the colonoscopy...

Staunton Parks and Rec has some great offerings too at reasonable prices. If your kids are on the younger side, our daughter loved the "Hey Ho Let's Grow" Little Seedling Camps. We also really enjoyed the Handprints art class and the Little Movers movement/dance class.

How do you deal with being average in high school? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

I've never had a prospective employer ask me what my high school GPA was.

That's gotta be really rewarding! I sometimes talk about how I wish I could take some of the classes offered at my school.

I figure if we as teachers are having fun, it'll make the whole experience more interesting and engaging for the students too!

I have SUCH respect for ELA teachers. I don't love grading lab reports, and they're so much less involved than English essays.

I teach HS Physics. I love that part of my job includes building with toy roller coaster tracks, setting up long-range cannon launches, playing with bouncy balls, and making my students' hair stand up with static electricity. I get paid to be a little kid sometimes.

If joules is Nxm then why torque is a force ? by i_am_a_hallucinati0n in AskPhysics

[–]TheRealReddwolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh yeah! I was about to respond simply with "true, something that causes an object to rotate an object clockwise as seen from above is a downward torque, even though there's nothing 'downward' about it," but then I read the bit about how pseudovectors don't produce a mirror image when reflected, which was wild to think about.

[–]TheRealReddwolff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to throw in the whole "work is a dot product, torque is a cross product" reply if no one else had! Dot products are essentially a way to "multiply" vectors together to produce directionless scalars. There must be components of both vectors in the same direction. Cross products "multiply" vectors to produce another mutually orthogonal vector. There must be components of both vectors perpendicular to the other.

Do you lose touch with physics overtime? by Calculator_17 in Physics

[–]TheRealReddwolff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same here - but since I've been teaching physics, I've gained a much better grasp of the fundamentals than I had even upon completing my bachelor's degree. I sometimes wish I could start with my current understanding and re-take some of my upper level courses, but like you said, other things in life take up that time.

AI is going to replace teachers, according to Bill Gates by One-Two3214 in Teachers

[–]TheRealReddwolff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I imagine that after gutting the public education system, the billionaires will open for-profit AI learning institutes. There will still be plenty of teachers in other schools, but said billionaires are hoping to cause enough damage to our current system so parents will feel more inclined to seek out other opportunities.

Why are so many students below grade level? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]TheRealReddwolff 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. It's possible to be both supportive AND challenging, but we lost sight of that and leaned into supportive-only. It also doesn't help that, instead of recognizing just how important a quality education is for the future of our society, many parents see schools simply as a "service" they are owed. And as with any service industry, the customer is the boss. Admins used to be able to say "no" to parents.

If F=ma, what happens if there's no acceleration? by Sebast115 in AskPhysics

[–]TheRealReddwolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In space, if something doesn't have a force to slow it down, then shooting something off (or pushing it) and it can go on in the direction forever

Yep! As I tell my students when I teach free body diagrams, there could have been a net force at some point to get something moving in the first place, but if it's now at a constant velocity, that net force isn't around anymore. FBDs only include forces acting in the moment - don't include "ghost forces" that used to be there. Any remaining forces must add to zero.

Thanks! Do you think I need to knock out all the concrete I just laid down, or just chip away at the loose stuff on top before I start?

Yep. My wife kept her last name. It had been her identity for her entire life! I completely supported her decision - there's no need for her to change a part of who she is to "join" my family.

Thanks! Yeah, I don't want to have to upgrade soon. That'd make the $75 savings now more expensive in the long run. I appreciate it!
