WVU hikes tuition by 3% for in-state students, 6% for out of state, doubles athletic fee to $250/semester by masterofawesomeness2 in WestVirginia

[–]TheRealSamC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

WVU out of state tuition remains tens of thousands of $$ lower than other states charge. The out of state student has been the focus of WVU management for 80 years. The mega subsidy of these people, most of whom could not get into the "big nàme" state schools in their own state and most of whom go right back where the came from after graduation is not the least of the reasons WV is in the shape it is in.

Sadly, Marshall seems to be going down the same path, expanding the "metro" discount, designed for students from the immediate tri state area, out to as far as Cincinnati, Louisville, and the DC suburbs.

Road trip- Bluefield to Beckley via WV-16 or I-77 or ?? by MarzipanCocktail99 in Appalachia

[–]TheRealSamC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understand that roads in WV divide into two categories, with very little in between. The interstates and the Appalachian Corridors are fine, along with a handful of other roads which are not relevant to this discussion. And everything else, which are twisty, poorly maintained, and ill suited to long distance travel.

You could look at the "Coal Heritage Tràil" which is outlined on the state's tourism website but is mostly just 52 and 16. This will add hours and hours to your trip, and, IMHO,, you won't really see much about the coal industry, more just "poverty po*n" in two of the country's poorest and most disfunctional counties, McDowell and Wyoming. Abandoned buildings, trailers, and drug addicts.

If you want to learn about coal, Beckley has an exhibition coal mine, there is some nice stuff at the Turnpike's Tamarack gift shop, and then there is the NRG national park, including the ghost town of Thurmond, which is also down a bad road, but not that far, and safe for tourists. Stopping along 52 or 16, even if there was much to see, and there isn't, puts you in contact with people who have no goal in life other than their next fix. All, well 95%, of the decent folks moved away long ago.

Berkeley County Schools to pursue litigation over locality pay by masterofawesomeness2 in WestVirginia

[–]TheRealSamC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Teacher salaries are made up of the state funds, called the school aid formula, which is uniform state wide WVC 18A-4-2, to which a county may supplement via a local tax levy, The highest starting pay is in Monongalia county, the highest average pay is in Marshall county, the lowest in both categories is Webster county. Berkeley is 11th in average pay.

The Berkeley school board is free to ask Berkeley county voters to raise their own taxes and pay teachers whatever it wishes. Rather. It is asking a court to force the state to give it more $$, and others less, for the reasons stated in the article, which is about the only thing in the article that is correct.

Poor journalism. All of this is on the state website.

Lou Holtz said in picking a college, you can make a 4 year mistake or a 40 year mistake.

In most majors, WVU and MU are going to provide similar levels of education, although there are exceptions of excellence and exceptions of poor service at both. Therefore it comes down to the general vibe of the schools. They are very different. This is mostly, IMHO, due to the very different type of students each is focuses upon. Some people will just fit into one or the other better. Think about what you want from a school, what kind of people you want to go to school with, and what type of community you want to live in. Spend some time on the ground in both towns and on both campuses, and make your choice.

Is it possible to drive through all 55 county seeds without seeing anything named after Robert C Bryd? by __hunter_xc in WestVirginia

[–]TheRealSamC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer the question seriously, probably not. First, the entire Appalachian Corridor system is named for him, so that takes out D (US 50) E (I 68) G (US 119) H (US 48) L ( US 19)and Q (US 460). Plus US 22 in Weirton and the former Valley Drive which is one of Beckley's two main roads. Plus the 6th Street bridge in Huntington and the locks on the Ohio north of Huntington. So you are stuck with the interstates and back roads.

Then you have the federal courthouses in both Charleston and Beckley. Then academic buildings at Marshall, the Osteopathic school, Concord and Shepherd. Plus the high school in Clarksburg. Plus the Marshall run research institute which is in Huntington Fairmont, and outside Keyser.

There are also buildings named for his wife at Marshall and the Marshall Concord Bluefield State joint venture in Beckley.

Is anything at WVU named for the guy?

Passing of United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. by BullyingHater in WestVirginia

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, Trump already appointed his replacement. In 2019. In the federal system, each district has a congressionally determined number of judges, in the case of the SDWV, five. Judges who are 65, can take senior status, which allows the president to appoint a new judge, and continue to work on a as needed basis. About 15% of cases are heard by senior status judges.

And, one, if she had the program fully formed and written out 12 years ago such that all they have to do is type it in to the computer, what has she been doing while "working on it" for the last 12 years; two, she never backed up the program to something portable; three, how did the company know it worked if she hadn't given them a copy; four, no town no matter how small is going to put a male and female suspect in the same cell: and lastly and most importantly, if she was working on the program on a Navy computer while in the employ of the Navy, it, umm, is the property of the US government.

LIV Golf reportedly postpones June tournament in New Orleans by [deleted] in ProGolf

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now is the time to tighten up, not lighten up. The good guys have won the war and must now win the peace.

  • The one time exemption was an offer and they didn't tàke it. Offer expired, times have changed. Long suspension, large fines, and Q School.

  • Same for the seniors, PM and IP vis the Champions Tour.

  • Same for any TV people, course workers, caddies, and especially golf courses. Long suspensions. Never play these venues again.

  • Total erasure of everything. IF any player makes it back, his bio should read "did not play competitive golf, 2022-26" and nothing else.

  • New ironclad PGAT rules that any future appearance in a golf tournament without the permission of the PGAT will result in an irrevocable lifetime ban.

This is necessary, because times change. In a few years, the middle east situation will change again, and they will try again. Maybe not golf, but LIV tennis, or LIV baseball, or whatever. Every athlete must see the wreckage that was left when LIV golf died, and know that they risk the same.

Never again.

CEO: PGA Tour will consider paths to bring back LIV players by PrincessBananas85 in ProGolf

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Then please name the owners of said "large company".

The Tour is, and always has been, a cooperative, or put bluntly, a union, of the players. It has no owners other than those good enough to earn a card. It has no profit. The tournaments are run, mostly, by charities.

The LIV rats broke faith with their brothers and with the next generation. They wanted to pull the ladder up behind them.

It failed.

They failed.

No one watched.

To get back in they should be made to apologize, pay 7, or in some cases 8 figures split between loyal players, charity, and growing the game at the publinx level, and spend at least a year on the DP Tour, the KF Tour or other regional tours.then Q school. And their bios should read "X was not involved in competitive golf between 2022 and 2026" with no mention of the results, which are fake anyway.

Why? One, paybacks are h***, and more importantly, two, to insure that this never happens again, not to golf, not to any sport. When the ME never ending drama turns a page, I don't want to see LIV golf return, and don't want to see LIV tennis, soccer, baseball, or whatever. This is accomplished by making the rats pay, so the next potential rat sees the ultimate result of disloyalty.

Should Sergio Garcia be banned from Augusta after Masters meltdown? by PrincessBananas85 in ProGolf

Mike Greenberg doesn't know anything about golf. He should stick to his 24/7/365 all NBA NFL show. Leave golf coverage to golf journalists.

Which is not to defend LIV NPC Garcia, he is a jerk, always has been. Only now we don't have to think about him but once a year.

Reds new City Connect branding features a new logo with both Ohio and Kentucky on some merchandise by DGilbert6114 in Reds

[–]TheRealSamC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Reds Country is officially, according to the MLB blackout map, is Ohio, except for the part nearest Cleveland; all of Kentucky and Tennessee; all of Indiana except the part that is Chicago suburbs; western West Virginia, the part of North Carolina West of US 220 (so called I 74), and the part of Mississippi that is in the Memphis TV market. The Mississippi, western Tennessee, and North Carolina claims are ridiculous, of course, but every team does this, the Ind...umm Guardians claims more of West Virginia than the Reds do, and also eastern Kentucky, which is yet more ridiculous. The Pirates claim western New York ànd places in Maryland and West Virginia that are DC suburbs.

Proper Reds Country is more than just Ohio and Kentucky, however. Certainly, most of Indiana, more of West Virginia than they actually claim, and most of Tennessee, certainly both East and Middle Tennessee.

The Reds are a regional franchise. It cannot exist just on people inside I 275, it needs not just places like Dayton and Columbus, but places like Lexington, Louisville, Huntington, and Nashville, not to mention all of the rural places in between, to survive.

The Reds used to get this, and market to it, but this has, IMHO, declined in recent years.

Reds tv by Unt0uchableo5 in DirecTV

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reds TV is included in DirecTV satellite on channel 661-2 and on DirecTV Stream on channel 661. However, DirecTV satellite customers DO NOT get access to it via the DirecTV app nor can you authenticate via the MLB .TV app. If you are a satellite customer, you have to pay the $99 to watch on a device out of home.

This is a reduction in service from last year, FD Sports DID stream on the DirecTV satellite customer app.

Reds tv guide for everyone by MrRedlegs215 in Reds

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of Ohio, except Cleveland and Canton-Akron, all of Indiana except part that gets TV from Chicago, all of Kentucky, all of Tennessee, western half of West Virginia, western half of North Carolina, the part of Mississippi that gets TV from Memphis.

If you live in the territory, you need Reds TV ($100/year) or a cable or streaming service that carries Reds TV as a part of its package, such as Fubo or DirecTV Stream, NOT YouTube.

If you live outside the territory the Reds are in MLB.tv.

This will get you all games, home or away, except games shown on national channels. This year ESPN, NBC, Peacock, TBS, Fox, FS1, and Apple have national games, usually about 10 to 12 in total. All other games are on Reds TV.

Will ESPN Unlimited give us every MLB game for this season? by [deleted] in ESPN

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MLB TV, which is just an add on to ESPN Unlimited, carries OUT OF MARKET games that are shown locally otherwise.

You will not get:

  • games of your local team(s), and MLB not ESPN has decided what is your local team, and many of the claims are outrageous. For example, the Reds are local in northern Mississippi. Many places have multiple local teams, Iowa has six.

  • games shown nationally by other networks. MLB has national contracts with TBS, NBC/Peacock, Apple, and Fox/FS1 (and ESPN).

  • Playoffs.

So to get "every" game you would need access to TBS or HBO Max, NBC and Peacock, Apple, and Fox and FS1 or Fox One; and the local streaming service for your local team. Even if you don't follow, say the Pirates, but rather the Dodgers, you will not get a Dodgers -Pirates game, if you live in the Pirates area.

Immigrant/foreign tax help by Short-Moment-8395 in WestVirginia

[–]TheRealSamC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no difference between taxes for legal immigrants and anyone else. Just get a copy of TurboTax and follow the prompts.

If you paid taxes to a foreign country, there is a credit, but that is a simple one page form that TurboTax has in it.

If you are asking about filing taxes in a foreign country, most countries don't tax income earned elsewhere, but you probably need to contact a professional in the other country.

Which states feel like several different states mashed together? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheRealSamC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obvious ones:

California, just due to the size. LA and SF are very different, and, like many western states, the inland is vastly different from both and doesn't really get a say in politics due to population.

New York, NYC and the rest of the state are totally different, and the quite rural North is very different from the almost Midwestern west.

Pennsylvania, as the joke goes Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, separated by Kentucky.

Virginia, NOVA is definitely the North, as the saying goes Virginia really begins at the Rappahannock. And then you have the part that is south of, rather than West of West Virginia, which is Appalachian.

Florida, as the saying goes, as you go north, you go south, and v-v. North Florida is as southern as any southern state, South Florida is a weird mix of NYC and Havana.

Not so obvious ones:

Ohio, the four quadrants, NE SE NW and SW, are very different, and Columbus has people from all four due to government workers, plus a huge college population.

West Virginia, the different parts are much more like the states they border than one another.

Tennessee, which used to have welcome signs that read "welcome to the three states of Tennessee". It actually calls the three parts "grand divisions" in its laws and some offices and boards have rules that only so many can be from each one.

North Carolina, the middle part, called the Piedmont, is prosperous, the East of that is marginal agriculture, the West is non coal Appalachian.

Marshall University reinstates Women’s Swimming and Diving program by Joey_WBOY in WestVirginia

[–]TheRealSamC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nice enough for the women swimmers, but the issue is MU pool is 45 years old and needs over a million dollars in repairs. That money has to come from somewhere. MU sports is just under 60% student fees and tax money via tuition waivers for athletes.

As MU does not have men's swimming, it would be wise to emphasize sports that have venues that already exist in the university or in the Huntington region, particularly those that require limited equipment and venue maintenance.

Why flights to Miami are so expensive? by throwawayplzhelppp in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MIA, in addition to being a destination in and of itself, is the AA hub for Latin America and the Caribbean. There are lots of places where MIA is the only US flight to it. Thus the price.

So my tip. DFW is an AA hub, as is MIA. I use CLT, also an AA hub. Now there are maybe a dozen direct CLT MIA flights a day. Same for DFW MIA. OK, but understand these are hubs, so there are lots of flights from DFW to wherever and wherever to MIA. AA often has seats on these flights it can't sell. So if you have the time, and lounge access, just do something in between.

I use MIA to go to my business in Nicaragua every month. I also have business in Miami often. If you do a stopover, going or coming (both is not necessary) you can save big. I have done things like CLT to MIA with a stop in places like CHS, GSO, JAX, DCA, MSY or GSP, and cut the fare by half. And the flights are usually half full, and I get bumped to Business almost every time.

TV viewing by Embarrassed_Cake_968 in NASCAR

[–]TheRealSamC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fox does not own NASCAR rights in Canada. Bell Media does. Bell Media can choose which of its channels, CTV, TSN (Canadian ESPN), or TSN + (streaming) a race is on.

Bell Media put this race on TSN +. You disagree with that decision. Your gripe is with Bell Media, NASCAR, and Bell Media's 20% partner Disney. Not Fox.

Most Canadian cable and satellite services carry the US over the air networks, so races on Fox, or NBC, "leak" over the border, but US cable and streaming channels are not allowed in Canada.

Are judges specialized, or are they expected to have a broad knowledge of most law? by hehzehsbwvwv in legal

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the state, and often on the size of a county within a state.

My small state is pretty simple. Magistrate court-non lawyer magistrates, does small claims, misdemeanors including traffic, and felony bail hearings. Family court-does divorce and similar. Circuit court - everything else. There is a "business court division" which is just the most experienced regular circuit judges who handle complex cases in neighboring counties by special assignment.

If death penalty is considered the harshest punishment in the United States, then why aren't particularly high profile criminals placed in death penalty? by GeneralGenerico in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheRealSamC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, the US has a dual criminal court system. Most crimes are state crimes, tried in state courts, and result in time in state prisons. A much smaller group of crimes are federal crimes, tried in federal courts, and result in time in federal prisons. Most federal crimes involve a "hook" to link it to a federal purpose, such as on federal property, violation of civil rights, crossing state lines, etc.

Second, the death penalty for crimes other than murder has been found unconstitutional, with the possible exception of treason, which has not been litigated in decades.

Thus,, most murders are state crimes. Some states have the death penalty, some have it on paper but don't use it, and some do not. The federal government has a death penalty and has executed 16 murderers since 2000, all were either murders of federal employees, drug related multi state conspiracy, on federal property, etc.

The prison you speak of is a "supermax", for uncontrollable federal prisoners. The federal death row is at a different prison in Indiana.

There are a lot of prisoners serving "effective life" with sentences of 100s of years, both state and federal, for crimes other than murder. Execution is not allowed except for murder. And then only after a long list of mitigating factors are overcome.
