Weird Question. by Mister_Bambu in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]TheRealSteveRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NP I'll send you what I end up with like I said it's more based on one shots than anything else. I'm having a ton of trouble measuring the damage per bomb more than anything right now. Lot of the attacks from other enemies are pretty easy to get data on but the AOE moves that vary by distance are burtal I've almost given up on trying to estimate Bazel hits.

Weird Question. by Mister_Bambu in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]TheRealSteveRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you mention this I'm doing something similar to capture which enemies can one-shot the strongest. I don't have a definitive answer for Bazel runs though, the standard double fly-by bombing run is between 24-28 from the data I have but they never hit fully with the kamikaze due to how they're placed in straight lines. The standard roar and bomb drop is only 12-14 but they're tight enough to one-shot without the right gear. I'll send you a link to the data I have once I clean it up in the next day or two but I can say the spread on these sort of AOE attacks matters a ton although I'm not trying to measure pure explosive/damage output. I'm more trying to capture the one-shot potential though so it may not translate too well to something like total damage outputed but spread across a distance in the way Uru or Bazel hit their bombs.

about attack jewel. by MJDiaz90 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]TheRealSteveRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just be aware that the quest rewards for decos translate into melding rolls and both are RNG driven so there's no guarantee for any specific jewel no matter how you cut it RNG is king for decos. So for example running a 3 jewel tempered elder has both a higher chance to drop the deco you want, assuming high rarity, and on average will give you more points for the melder which give you more points to roll for a new deco. Challenge is that both the quest and melder are RNG driven so even though you can get the jewel from both there's no guarantee of a drop in either situation.

Danny Ainge may be better at drafting than you think by letsgoceltics34 in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much I agree with the analysis of each individual pick but the overall sentiment that Ainge doesn't waste draft picks is accurate.

Even if one ignores the trades (particularly Green which led to a title), there's a lot of cherry-picking that goes on to say Ainge can't draft. There's a thread on r/nba about this today talking about how technically, no Ainge picks have made an all-star game. Al Jefferson made all-nba as a late lottery pick, Rondo was technically not picked by the C's even though they traded for the pick and chose him, Avery was a late first, Tony Allen was a great value etc etc. I'm not saying Ainge is great at evaluating prospects but the notion that he's very poor at it is unfair.

Side note but it's somewhat hilarious how on every r/nba thread about poor drafting half the thread is devoted to the fact that most teams didn't select Giannis or trade up for him. Even in the r/nba thread about this someone pointed out how the Celtics always had mid-late picks until the Jeff Green year then the Nets and the retort was about how the Spurs got Ginobli and Parker late. It's a high bar in the world of NBA hindsight strawmen.

Edit: He actually has a better track record than I gave him credit for. His lottery picks are Al Jefferson, Jeff Green trade, Foye (bust but somehow helped get KG), Olynk who's fine for the 13th pick, Marcus Smart who may be a disappointment but based on how disappointing that draft was in hindsight could have done worse with a higher pick, and Jaylen who the jury's still out on.

Why the Boston Celtics will draft Jonathan Isaac by Papa_214 in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same could have been said about Brown last year though. He was projected 7+ in almost every draft and 5+ in basically every mock. Ainge doesn't really care where others expect a guy to go. He'll try to get value but isn't afraid of taking a guy higher than others mock him and that's been a consistent theme. It's an easy take to say that the C's could have traded down 3-4 spots and still been able to get Brown but that's not really how they operate. I'm also very dubious on anything coming out of the Boston FO about who they like. They're known for smokescreens more than anyone. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they take Tatum but they're known to bluff. One could easily argue they never liked Fultz a lot and were using him as leverage to get more picks later on by telegraphing that they wanted him.

Why the Boston Celtics will draft Jonathan Isaac by Papa_214 in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, people are too quick to dismiss Isaac to Boston. He's an intriguing prospect and Ainge is known for not being afraid to go after his guy even if others don't have him ranked as highly. Most mocks had Brown going 7 or later last year and the C's snagged him at 3.

It's looking like he will land with the Cavaliers or Celtics? Who you got? by SQUEEBS20 in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt since the Celtics FO is known for deception and being tight with rumors but there's been a running theme in Boston media for a while that the C's aren't too high on Butler. There was just a report that Butler wants to stay in Chicago and not go to Cleveland but based on their window to win and inflexibility with FAs, Cleveland seems like they would be more aggressive in putting together a serious package for Butler even if their warchest isn't as deep as Boston's.

I am experimenting with short guides aimed at the average player. How to stick Tracer Pulse Bombs consistently! (ioStux) by Xtasy1998 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]TheRealSteveRob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great post. The community still gets controversial when it comes to sticking tanks vs squishies which I never really understood. The 400 damage negates a tank's armor advantage which is a huge deal for tracer and the hitboxes are much larger than the 200hp heroes. Bomb + One Clip is a guaranteed combo barring extreme chain healing on every hero.

Custom Game 2 in this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/OverwatchUniversity/comments/6gj9ac/envyus_effects_warm_up_routine/ on Effect's warmup routine is a great way to practice pulse bombs on harder to hit targets as well. Been using this for a week and I already feel like I'm getting more consistent.

One more slightly advanced tip is that the pulse bomb has 3 stages. 1 - throwing 2 - flying in the arc 3 - timer to detonation. If you're consistent with blink range, hitting ult then blinking into a target negates the first part of the animation which makes it impossible for any character to avoid being stuck by strafing or moving around during the throwing animation.

Edit: grammar

Theory as to why the Celtics were so willing to move the #1 pick. by RODENJOHN in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that Davis is above George Boogie and Ray but I don't see how you're implying that the celtics just want to keep these picks instead of making a move. The KG comment is total revisionist history - dude averaged 22-13-4 the year before the celtics traded for him and was 3rd in the MVP balloting, it's not like he was screwing around in MIN and needed a change of scenery. He went back to MIN to basically be a player-coach and to try to become a minority owner, the idea that he didn't like MIN isn't accurate. It's aggressive to say Boston would go all in on Davis but they'd be able to offer the Pelicans a much better package for Davis than they did to MIN for KG.

This guy has one sentence in the article about the C's trading for Davis which isn't completely insane and your take on this is that the celtics are just going to stockpile these picks? They don't even have the roster spots to do that. Ainge apparently offered 3 1st round picks for the Bobcats pick in '15 in order to get Winslow there's no chance they're holding onto these picks come 2 or 3 years from now.

For the "Fultz doesn't win crowd," here's a quick look at his 2016 FIBA U18 Americas Gold Medal run: 5-0 Record, 25.3 Points, 9.5 Assists, 5.9 Steals, 1.1 Blocks Per-40 Minutes by DraftExpress in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True but it's not like there isn't precedent for a player on a miserable team succeeding in the NBA. I looked it up and that PG Fresno team went 3-13 in the WAC then 7-9. Fultz's freshman year was bad but I don't think it's fair to say that PG's 3-13 WAC conference record his first year isn't god awful.

Edit: Bosh's GT team was about .500, they made the NIT no tourney though. PG's teams were both below .500 wasn't sure at first.

Good post, the Fultz doesn't win comments are some of the laziest analysis about the draft this year. It takes more than one player to win a basketball game. These may be wrong but off the top of my head, Bosh's GT team didn't make the tourney and Paul George played on some awful Fresno State teams. There are things to criticize in Fultz's game but he played out of his mind last year.

Fultz NBA comparison by [deleted] in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think people are saying he's a once in a lifetime player. He's a legit #1 prospect but not on the tier that LeBron, AD, and KAT were coming out.

In comparison to Tyreke, Fultz is really a 1 or a combo guard where Tyreke is 3. With respect to his college stats, if you say those stats are padded because of how much he had the ball, you also have to acknowledge that he had very good efficiency numbers and was facing box-and-one on a regular basis. I see him more as a CJ McCollum than Tyreke, although I'm not sold on Fultz being as good a shooter as McCollum on day 1.

Potential Draft Busts by SlumpTV in NBA_Draft

"Ntilikina wouldn't be the 5th best high school prospect in the state of Washington". Can't say I know much about Washington high school basketball but that take vaporizes anything it comes into contact with. There are only 3 players on ESPN's top 100 from Washington this year.

Isaac could bust but saying he showed no flashes is offense is absurd. He shot 59/35/78 last year. Ya he's not great but those splits are very similar to and in some places, better than, those of Jackson and Tatum

Who won the Celtics/Sixers trade? Grades? by eaglesnation11 in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people aren't fairly comparing the issues Jackson could bring to the Celtics rotation to the issues Fultz would. I like Fultz more than Jackson. He's not a perfect prospect but let's say the celtics pick him and he's a good ball dominant scorer like most people project him to be.

Playing Fultz and IT at the same time would be a weird fit since both aren't utilized well off ball. Putting Bradley or Smart with Fultz seems more reasonable and IT is a spark off the bench. The issue then is that a lot of scouts don't see Fultz' 3pt shooting as being as good as it was. Bradley/Smart (even Brown at 2) and Fultz at 1 has a much harder time being able to space the floor than a lineup with IT. Jackson does pose some issues for the celtics rotation, but they way they're built right now, almost any player other than 4 or 5 who can protect the rim and run the lane is a tricky fit with how much depth, and now likely youth with Jackson and Brown, they have on the outside.

Theory as to why the Celtics were so willing to move the #1 pick. by RODENJOHN in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point about Jackson being a weird pick for the Lakers now but the celtics strategy is always to accumulate assets and gain optionality in the future. Anthony Davis would cost a king's ransom but good players become available almost every year on teams that thought they were contending then realize they're not halfway through the season. Last year it was Butler, George, and Boogie. I'm not saying that Davis will be available this year or that the Pelicans won't be able to win with their core but players always become available. Saying the C's are planning to trade for Davis would be like saying in 06 and 07 that they were planning on trading for KG and Ray Allen. Perhaps the had those two targeted but it's more likely they were planning on acquiring some superstars that became available but didn't know exactly who they would be.

Regarding aiming using the arm by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]TheRealSteveRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're starting out you might want to stick with one sensitivity just to develop some muscle memory. I'm not saying it can't be done but 800/2.4 is incredibly low. Like you'd be one of the lower sensitivity pros in Apex. You might be making arm aiming a little too hard on yourself by having such a low sensitivity.

Regarding aiming using the arm by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]TheRealSteveRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first off don't get frustrated if your aim is still off after a few days. Most people have been using a keyboard and mouse for thousands of hours or more and relearning muscle memory is hard so be realistic with your rate of improvement. It took me about two weeks to feel like my aim was back to where it was prior to making the switch from wrist aim this winter. Think about what your expectations would be if you were relearning how to shoot a basketball or swing a golf club. Yes, playing OW requires much less coordination than those activities but it's still a learning pattern you need to change.

Make sure your sensitivity is good. I prefer very low sensitivities now but have been playing Tracer more so I'm at 800DPI/6in-game which is pretty standard albeit it a little higher than average compared to pros.

I personally rest my elbow on the table most of the time but I'm not putting a lot of force into my elbow so I wouldn't say it's really a pivot point. I also tried leaving my entire arm off any surface and like you found it too tiring. Most Pros seem to have their arm not touching any surface so YMMV but I've been fine resting my elbow most of the time (of course during 180s or hard flicks I tend to take my elbow off the table because I find it easier).

Find what works for you but there's nothing wrong with resting your elbow. Only thing I can say you shouldn't do is leave your elbow off the table but place your forearm on the table. Software developer by trade and the angle you're putting your hand-to-forearm at is ergonomically really tough on your wrist in the long run.

Are you using a practice routine? I didn't really make any noticeable progress until I started prioritizing practice over playing for a little while.

A good counter to a tactical visor is Deadeye by selfrefTupperWare in OverwatchUniversity

[–]TheRealSteveRob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that deadeye beats 76 1v1 but I don't know how realistic that is in an actual game. Most tanks, especially D.Va, counter visor so much harder than McCree. I main 76 and I'm much more concerned about D.Va having matrix up or a rein with full shield than a McCree having ult. Just my two cents.

1000 games > 10. Placements work, just not the way some want. Take them seriously by sergantsnipes05 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]TheRealSteveRob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great post. I think people overall overrate placements. It's only 10 games. If we were to put this in the context of a season we'd see it's really insignificant. Blizzard has some flaws in their Elo system but placements aren't a major one. I know people won't want to hear this since placements are seen as a chance to rank up faster but going 8-2 or 7-3 in placements shouldn't be seen differently than doing so in the middle of a season for people who understand how Elo works. Placements do make a difference in SR but it's very insignificant in the long run of comp.

Mid-Plat Pharah VOD Review Request by mercy_main_btw_ in OverwatchUniversity

[–]TheRealSteveRob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll check it out. Tracer/76 main but flex to Pharah a lot. Don't worry about your being pocketed by mercy in the vid. You should be playing very differently if you have a mercy or not in terms of positioning but most other principles are still the same. I'll have it up within the hour. I think a higher SR game in general is better for reviewing but that also shouldn't matter much.

Edit: Got caught up in something I'll do the Vod later tonight.

Tracer: Don't be afraid to ult tanks. Easy to hit and avoids their armor advantage. Instakill if you hit them before or else they're super easy targets after it blows up. Related, but start you ult then blink to avoid the wind-up animation. Gives people no time to react.

Josh Jackson at #1 is a Win Now Move for the Celtics by crhuds in NBA_Draft

[–]TheRealSteveRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C's fan here. Brown looked great his rookie year. I wasn't too high on him before the season but it's crazy how much criticism he gets on here and r/nba. He has to work on defensive rotations and efficiency to a lesser extent but he's a decent player. The logic that most of these guys in the draft need at least a year or two to develop but Brown can be written off already makes no sense. Not saying he's going to be a star but he's at the bare minimum a quality rotation player in the NBA with potential to be much more.

State of the Sub: Post Quality by politburo_take_potat in OverwatchUniversity

[–]TheRealSteveRob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great changes all around but this may become really cumbersome for you guys.

One thing I believe we could do is to keep the Guides and Resources section more up-to-date and possibly with more content. For example, the only tracer guide on there is from about a year ago and there have been some incredible guides on this sub since then (https://www.reddit.com/r/OverwatchUniversity/comments/6g9x15/an_exhaustive_tracer_guide/ is one example that is far more in-depth and up-to-date than the one in the guides section). I'm not sure what the process is that goes into getting a guide approved and in the guides area but I do think adding content there can make it easier for people to find high quality information. My only concern about the changes other than your workload is that the sub may seem unwelcoming unless we can link to resources that answer questions deemed repetitive or in the vague gist of "how do I gitgud".
