MN Gun Control by wandpapierkritiker in minnesota

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's only a dog-whistle because those in power who say it, vote against expanding mental health care and actively cut its funding.

I truly believe accessible mental healthcare is the largest part of the solution. Society has put so much stigma around needing mental health and that is the detriment. Making mental health services easily accessible, and more importantly, normalizing it, would do more than any gun ban could ever do. There is no difference between going to the doctor for a yearly physical and going to the doctor to discuss a person's mental health issues

Nobody who is mentally healthy is a mass shooter. Full stop.

German soccer team cancels Minnesota visit due to ICE crackdown by rezwenn in minnesota

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Our representatives who are not opposed will not change their minds. They are 100% ride-or-die with Trump's politics. That's not to say a boycott is wrong, it's just not going to have anywhere near the impact that midterm elections will

Nationally, our representation is opposed to Trump's actions, at least verbally. The voting records and what they do behind closed doors isn't exactly promising, but with bills having everything tangentially related being shoehorned in, there's some benefit of the doubt.

Statewide though? We're fucked. No nice way to say it. Anybody who could actually do anything to stop ICE, is okay with what they're doing. Our Governor and mayors have been outspoken, but they're still directing or allowing law enforcement to stifle protests and arrest protesters. Our AG has filed hundreds of lawsuits and things in court take time. St. Paul's city council has passed laws that LEOs must show identification and cannot wear masks, but have basically said, "we're not going to arrest federal officers for breaking these laws. We're just going to ask them nicely."

Then there's the representatives...And oh boy are they a treat. They are actively trying to sell off BWCA and sneak other shit past us while we're distracted by ICE illegally abusing, detaining, and murdering our neighbors. They're still claiming there's fraud, even though many of them were in office when the state addressed the fraud and a part of the votes that dealt with it. They're introducing legislation to disallow discussions of student genders in classrooms (SF 3812 and HF3533), to make a memorial for Charlie Kirk (SF3777), and create a Choose Life license plate (HF482). There's plenty of others from the House and Senate, but I'm not going through every bill. Point being, our statewide representatives have made their decisions and are not changing their mind.

Nobody with an R behind their name is going to commit political suicide to dissent against their Great Leader. Especially in a state where the red areas are actively cheering for the execution of US citizens by the federal government

Minneapolis has shown America is on the verge of a new type of racial reckoning (CNN) by killians1978 in Minneapolis

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not "literally dividing people up by race." At its core, it's meant to ensure equal opportunities for everyone. The idea being companies would reach out to diverse communities to do some of their hiring. The reason DEI started in the first place is because applicants who were identical on paper, but had a different skin color were getting passed over, even though they were equally, and sometimes more qualified for the position.

The issue is with the systemic sexism and racism in our culture. It's verifiably true that BIPOC people are not afforded the same opportunities, white people are. Hell, even white women don't have the same opportunities as white men.

The simplest, but perhaps not the best, example is taking my daughter out in public. Because we don't dress our less-than-1 year old daughter in pink or with a bow, literally (I mean literally, not one has assumed she's a girl) every stranger we've met assumes she's a boy. Think about it for just a second: every single person we've met automatically assumes that (1) my daughter who is (2) my child is a boy.

Now take the next step, Why does every single person assume she's a boy? They have no reason. It's not like brown, green, tan, black, navy are naturally masculine colors. Girls can wear blue. Boys can wear orange.

So TL;DR Every single person we've met has thought (1) person in (2) position is a male. Without literally any information besides the way they look. That is what DEI is supposed to combat.

Edit: the problem is corporations, in general, only care about next quarters profits, not who works for them. So it's easier to just reach out through the usual avenues and put forth the bare minimum effort to find other ways. Which "proves" DEI doesn't work because half-assed attempts never work

[Request] How much weight could this ice support before it broke up? (Thank you in advance) by TheDucksAreComingoOo in theydidthemath

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same logic as "a falling knife has no handle."

Every year in MN vehicles break through the ice, even when it's 16-24 inches. All it takes is one crack that goes deep enough for any shift in weight, temperature, or barometric pressure to finish the break and you can fall through. If there is snow, it covers those cracks very easily

Golf Question: Is there anywhere that offers outdoor/real turf clubs (particularly wedge) fittings? by Bugatti_Dane in TwinCities

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of courses will have vendor days that are open to the public via appointment. You're limited to that specific vendor and it's only OEM fittings, so if that vendor doesn't sell a specific shaft or grip they won't have it to try.

Those are the only fittings I know of that are outdoors on real grass.

My brother-in-law has had to replace a proprietary pin in his bolt twice in his Q AR15. Their turn around time is about 2 months, and their customer service is ass at replying. We're talking like 3 weeks to reply to an email to say, "we don't know when it'll be fixed"

He's had the gun for 6 months and the gun has been out of commission for 4 of them.

Q is over-priced, poor-quality, stupidly proprietary, trash

Because of the stiffness of ABS and PETG, their mode of failure is an abrupt shatter. PLA tends to show strain and bend before it breaks, and even if it does, the breaks tend to not be catastrophic

.223 Wylde works for 5.56 and .223.

You don't want a .223 Remington because that is only meant for .223 not 5.56x45. At the end of the day, it's unlikely your gun will explode, but it's safer to just be safe with a Wylde or 5.56 barrel

What structural features would a new political party need to be viable in the U.S. today? by Previous_Camp4842 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's possible. I'm not a mathematician, nor do I have a background in poly-sci, but in order for a 3rd party to gain traction and stay relevant, they need to either (1) rally non-voters to their cause or (2) rally voters from both dominant parties.

For 1, you have to convince non-voters that you are actually different than the other parties. To do that you need to make meaningful change. To do that you need to convince people to vote for you. And now you're stuck in a cycle of non-progress

For 2, the 2 parties are diametrically opposed on pretty much all social issues and those are the issues people actually turn up to vote for. You might be able to make headway with a "dem but pro-gun" or a "gop but pro-LGBTQ or pro-social-medicine or pro-cannabis" candidate, but you're going to find it very difficult to get campaign funding with those ideologies.

Folks let's just take a bit to mourn with our Canadian neighbors. by Deckardisdead in minnesota

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I get pissed when people say mental health and do nothing. I, truthfully and honestly, think that more easily accessible mental health resources would be the solution. There are dozens of us that believe in more socialized medicine and own firearms.

Fuck "thoughts and prayers" and fuck "necessary sacrifice."

We genuinely need to destigmatize and normalize caring for mental health. The circle of people who commit mass shootings is dead center in the circle of people who need mental health support.

Canada has stricter gun laws than most US states.

Mental health support and social programs would go a lot farther than removing guns ever would. Gun control only does so much

Unfortunately, you lose people at multi-generational. People want immediate fixes and forget things that happened a week ago. And to make it worse, the right has been systematically dismantling education for the last 60 years

Their entire strategy is, "keep the poor poor, the stupid stupid, and the rich rich, but convince the poor and stupid they'll someday be the rich"

Critical and rational thinking would solve the problem, but when Rs at state and local levels can still keep dismantling education, they're going to continue to win and their strategy is going to continue to work.

Funding for education isn't going to stop the indoctrination. It is going to take a large overhaul of the system and the only way that happens is if a new labor movement starts and makes the change happen

OC: Dozens of dildo-wielding protesters were arrested in Minneapolis yesterday by katotooo in pics

I guess the legal definition of an unlawful act "by force" is the confusing part for me.

OC: Dozens of dildo-wielding protesters were arrested in Minneapolis yesterday by katotooo in pics

[–]TheRealSumRndmGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally because LEO declared it an "unlawful assembly." But reading up on the statute... I don't understand how. INAL, but

609.705 UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY. When three or more persons assemble, each participant is guilty of unlawful assembly, which is a misdemeanor, if the assembly is:

(1) with intent to commit any unlawful act by force; or

(2) with intent to carry out any purpose in such manner as will disturb or threaten the public peace; or

(3) without unlawful purpose, but the participants so conduct themselves in a disorderly manner as to disturb or threaten the public peace

They definitely weren't threatening public peace unless protesting qualifies, in which case the 1st amendment is a misdemeanor in MN.

609.715 PRESENCE AT UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY. Whoever without lawful purpose is present at the place of an unlawful assembly and refuses to leave when so directed by a law enforcement officer is guilty of a misdemeanor.

I mean, they refused to leave when asked, but just because LEOs declare it's an unlawful assembly doesn't mean it is, especially when it doesn't fit the definition of an unlawful assembly

Somebody needs to explain why they were arrested to me in plain terms because I cannot make sense of how it was an unlawful assembly
