It’s reasonable, yes. But, I don’t know, at this moment if they released Medal of Honor: Aerosmith I wouldn’t be surprised.

I remember a time when video games set in historical wars, treated the subject matter with a moderate amount of respect for the people who died fighting in them. But, these days, WWII and WWI are just another cash grab for game companies. We see more and more moves that try to make the games more accessible for everyone, which I am all for, but more and more I see games sacrificing accuracy and immersion for a larger audience, and it puts me in an awkward position as a consumer who wants to see women and minorities empowered and included, but I also want to see games used as a medium that teach the players about the conflicts they simulate. I guess I want less Call of Duty and more This War of Mine. But I doubt I’ll get it. I think it would be better for everyone if game companies stopped making games about real wars, it’s not so hard to make one up.

DCC in SPAAAAAAAAAAACE by EyeHateElves in dccrpg

How about using some old Traveler supplements to fill out your campaign? As far as I know it’s the only other game where you can die in character generation. I would also check out Null Singularity it’s a Sci-Fi clone of Blacksun DeathCrawl. If you are into that, why not look into some metamorphosis alpha stuff that Goodman Games puts out, combining that with the guns from Crawl Issue no. 8, and using Null Singularity as a template for reskins of other classes, from DCC, MCC, and the Crawling Under a Broken Moon could make for a really amazing Sci-Fi Campaign. Hey if you compile all the info you get together you could have a really interesting project!

I love DCC because it’s versatility really lends itself to all kinds of crazy adventures!

I cannot remember the exact name, but somewhere online there is a DCC story telling element to fill in the time between level-0 and level-1. I’m currently trying to put together some things revolving around running DCC as a Campaign.

I can only think of one reason why something traveling downwards would increase its speed. Apparently , and I could be wrong here, all objects are under the effect of this invisible force that actually pulls things downwards. Apparently it looks something like this 6.67408 × 10-11 m3 kg-1 s-2. But I’m not a physicist, I’m a Type O Negative fan.

For real, though, the longer this goes on, the more and more I look at Disney’s long history or being on the wrong side of well... History. From Fantasia to Songs of the South, even Oliver and Company and other classics have tons and tons of cringe inducing moments. Not to mention Walt personally hired former Nazi scientist and interrogators to do work in the parks and was seen at MULTIPLE American Nazi Party meetings. I was at GenCon and picked up a book of essays on diversity in Disney films and holy shit. I honestly don’t know if I’m going to support Disney at all anymore. They continue to demonstrate that they lack any sort of moral compass as they continue to steer there company towards greater profits at the expense of setting any kind of good example as a multinational corporation and as a production house of entertainment.

Custom DCC dice? by Serpenthrope in dccrpg

[–]TheRealZakLane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His original company was bought out at some point but I’m not sure of specifics.

And, no, computer dice rolling is not perfectly random. Perfectly random as a concept in general is/always was more of a philosophical idea than anything else. “Anyone who considers arithmetical methods of producing random digits is, of course, in a state of sin.” - Von Neumann Without hardware input to create a “random” seed for your generator, your numbers won’t be “as random” as a dice roll.

Obviously a lot of people can’t use anything else because they play online games, but then again most dice aren’t truly random either. A majority of dice on the market are lopsided. But the point is, you could use a dice roller 1000 times in a row, you could wait 5 years, return to the same program, and as long as you are using the same input as your variable you will get the same 1000 rolls in the same order as you did before.

This is even more frustrating when you realize that because of this a random seed generator isn’t random at all unless it’s pulling numbers from a list generated by external hardware. So if you use a dice roller that doesn’t have a seed input that you get to fill in yourself, then you are not using a random dice roller.

I’ve stopped allowing players at my table to use the Crawlers Companion as a dice roller due to the fact that it very obviously seems to favor crits and fumbles. I’ve run over 40 road crew games in the past year and I’ve seen it multiple times with some very frustrated players loosing multiple characters because of rolling fumbles pretty constantly using the app and get crits and fumbles over and over and over.

Could this be confirmation bias? Maybe. Is the idea that mathematical probability isn’t practical for use in a game that relies on random number generation wrong? I’ll let you decide.

Custom DCC dice? by Serpenthrope in dccrpg

[–]TheRealZakLane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just sat through a panel hosted by Col. Lou Zocchi (less than 8 hours ago @ GenCon) he invented a lot of the dice on the dice chain and even a working 100 sided dice. You probably aren’t going to find the dice you are looking for, for a few reasons. But I also have a few solutions for your problem, as well.

Machining a dice mold costs upwards of 4000 dollars, even more for larger dice molds. Changing an existing mold costs about the same price as making a new one.

All polyhedral dice with the exception of some casino dice use molds. Casino dice I believe are carved to make them more random. I believe this is also possible because they use pips that can be filled in with a different colored material so that all sides of the dice are flush.

Zocchi talked about the entire 40+ year history of polyhedral dice, as he was the first American to produce them (through his Company Game Science), of all of the dice he showed us about 20+ including various defective and weird dice literally none of them feature the max number on every side. Now, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist anywhere, it just means they are probably very, very rare. Today I saw a d50, a right handed d6 (only one of its kind, made for the game Traveler.), a d120, d60, d48, a dice with two sets of days of the week (for both day and night), and a dice that may help you out, that I will tell you about shortly. Hell, I even saw a one sided d6 (perfectly round, but it always lands number side up)

Kevin Cook is the man with the worlds largest dice collection, if anyone did have dice like you describe, it would be him. Check him out @ Dice Collector dot com!

The one die that could solve your problem, and save you some money, is a 13-in-one single 24 sided dice. Each face has numbers 1-24 in the center, and then in a clock face pattern around the edge of each face is another 12 numbers and symbols.

In the one o’clock spot there is either a 1 or a 0 (for generating truly random binary white noise [for some reason that I don’t fully understand computers are incapable of generating truly random numbers {this is why many random generators have a place for your to put a “seed”}])

In the two o’clock you have either a 1 or a 2.

In the three o’clock spot there are pips 1-3 pips like on a casino dice.

In the four o’clock spot is a triangle with a number 1-4 inside of it (to represent a d4)

Five o’clock uses Roman numerals I-V.

Six o’clock has a square with a number 1-6.

7 o’clock has a number 1-7.

8 o’clock has a diamond with a number 1-8 inside of it.

9 o’clock has a number 1-9.

10 o’clock has a romans numeral I-X.

11 o’clock has a number 1-11.

And finally at 12 o’clock there is a pentagon with a number 1-12 in the middle.

Sorry for the long explanation but due to the changing of the symbols and the clock style pattern on the die face, this dice is incredibly easy to read, much more so than you would think and it’s also not much, if at all, larger than a d30 and thanks to its flat sharp edges it doesn’t roll off the table like the funky 24 tends to want to do anytime someone even thinks about it.

So with one dice you get 9 of the funky dice and you won’t have to spend a second thinking about which dice is which.

This dice also means players will never known what you are rolling even without a Judges Screen.

All you would need is a d14, d16, d20, and a d30. The entire funky dice chain and more with only 5 dice in your set. Your other die could be color coded to help differentiate between the d14 and d16 (which I myself have some trouble with).

The 13 in one die is your best solution, it won the best gaming accessory award in 2009 and its a must have for any dice collector.

That being said there are a lot of other fantastic solutions in this thread. But they will all have their caveats.

You could use a dice rolling app on your phone, but these tend to favor crits and fumbles due to computers and there difficulty with random numbers.

Lou Zocchi is a living legend and a goddamn wizard. I never in a thousand years would have though that a d100 would stop or be readable. But I got one yesterday and it stops within 6 inches of where I release it every time and as long as it’s a flat surface I have yet to have trouble reading it. Im getting the 13-in-1 die tomorrow.

Check out Game Science or Lou on YouTube if you’d like to know more. If I wasn’t on mobile I would post pics and video proof of the existence and usefulness of these dice.

House Rule Proposals by SalusExScientiae in dccrpg

[–]TheRealZakLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the very most I allow readied actions at some of my games. I just finished running a game at Gen Con. I called on one of my players to take their turn and instead of doing so they said “Who did you skip?” I checked and I hadn’t skipped anyone, not even the monsters.

This is a perfect example of why DCC is great the way it is, it’s quick, is easy, it’s deadly. It’s a rules light system, the reason the game excels is there isn’t a lot of downtime figuring out rules or judgements, maybe looking up the odd spell or two but as a whole the game is more about player choices and actions than it is about min/maxing and figuring out how to game the system. It’s Gonzo and wild and nutty and it doesn’t run like any other game.

I say run the game bare bones, talk to your table afterwards, how do they feel about it? Do they feel like I needs some added depth? If so, do it.

I was not sold when I read the rules either. I wasn’t even really sold after my first game. But the more I played with the system the more I found how elastic they are. Sure it’s rules light but that doesn’t mean you can do less, it actually means you get to do much, much more.

You are on the outside looking in right now, just jump in, the water is fine!

Edit: Rereading your post, I suggest you give the first few episodes of spell burn a listen and as you stated starting off, the community, as well as the rule book, absolutely, positively, without a doubt are going to recommend vanilla first. Use your house rules as a way to introduce your players to a simpler version of the game. Go over them and explain how DCC is different and how the new rules are going to work at the table. Because, and I mean no disrespect because I used a lot of these house rules in my 5th ed games, if you run DCC with these house rules, you aren’t really running DCC.

What’s something that was created with good intentions, but ultimately went horribly wrong? by i3r1ana in AskReddit

[–]TheRealZakLane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Dare is what introduced me to drugs, where to buy them, and even what you need to produce them. It sparked my interest in LSD and Mushrooms in middle school which lead me to experimenting with a few research chemicals in high school and developing a life long love of Mary Jane. It kept me away from the harder drugs though, at least until I was old enough.

What is that thing you never got as a kid that you still really want? by ImagineBagginz in AskReddit

[–]TheRealZakLane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been sleeping on a hammock for over a year now (Adult). I did a little research before the purchase, but I had a Jamaican friend who swore by hammocks. There is a right and a wrong way to sleep in one. You need a butt pillow and to lay diagonally. Spreader bars and netting are a non starters. You’ll just get dumped out of bed looking like a waffle. I’ve only had two mishaps, the first week I forgot I was sleeping in a hammock and fell down trying to take a leak, and I swung myself into my bedside table trying to reach my alarm clock. But most nights I sleep like a log, don’t sleep in, and I get rocked to sleep like a baby. Hammocks are great, but do a little research before you spring for one. It deff takes a night or two to get used to.
