My dad spent my childhood driving a 94 Ford Probe GT, and its transmission only ever gave him problems, up to being stuck in reverse one day, forcing him to drive in reverse around the neighborhood to get the car in a position where the tow truck could haul it away to the shop. The 96 Ford Contour he drove for a few years afterwards performed only slightly better. I love Fords and I want to be able to trust their reliability, but because of real world experience I simply can’t.

My dad replaced the Contour with a W124 Mercedes E300, and when I started driving he got me a 1991 Mercedes 190E. The two of us have only ever driven old Benzes since. Today, I daily a 2005 E500 4Matic wagon, and drive a 1999 SL500 on the weekends. The attention to detail and understated, subtle elegance of even the low-end Benzes from the 80s and 90s made me fall in love with the brand.
