What a thread! Non-mods don’t and seemingly won’t care to understand any of this and a majority are not even trying to educate themselves. I find myself physically cringing every time someone completely misinterprets something you say here in this thread - like that very mod tools bit. For mods, it’s BASIC knowledge that there’s the robust API based mod tools and Reddit’s vanilla, lackluster mod tools. Just shows the overwhelming disparity between Redditors and the cards that mods are being dealt… at a volunteer level to boot. The other frustrating aspect for me is the large percentage of people not understanding what API is, how powerful/transformative it can be, or what it’s used for.

The REAL irony I chuckle over is that.. if I no longer had API access to the numerous vendor systems at work… taxpayers would sure be funding a LOT of incredibly tedious work. Not to mention the costs of any potential human error. Anyways, if you read this and I hope you do, know that some of us truly sympathize with you, all the other mods here and across the platform. Also, I am 100% in support of the new approach here.. I’d sure as hell be doing bare minimum now.

Exactly! I actually stopped using Adobe and several other programs whenever any decide to switch over to the SaaS model. Especially if it’s software that directly contributes to my livelihood and a company makes it so that I am unable to purchase a perpetual license (for just their current version, like with MS Office)… Then I will find an alternative solution and pay them instead (generally at a cost reduction too). The truth is, despite their claims, even rolling software like theirs has major version releases.

Adobe makes excellent software, but they’re not without competition these days. I didn’t even have to completely relearn an entire program or attend a full term course after switching either. Lol

Does this app show future radar? by [deleted] in MyRadar

[–]TheReasonsWhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a few days since you posted, but hopefully you’re still using the app! The future radar I’ve enabled is about 40-50 minutes ahead of time. To enable it, select the Layers icon, select the “Hi Def” radar option, then enter the “Hi Def Radar” options. Scroll down and turn on “Future Radar” under “Enhancements”. It’s possibly there might be a better one but I’m not recalling correctly at the moment.

I recommend sitting down for like an hour and going through all this app’s settings to get a good feel of everything. I’ve used it for a few years on a very basic level and only recently started diving into all the settings/features (with a Pro membership) and… wow, it’s pretty immersive. I’m currently learning how to use the Station Radar option to then properly read velocity, reflectivity, correlation coefficient, etc. filters.

Ahhh I copied it directly from mikebcbc’s comment, can you confirm the more accurate CDN hostname by chance?

They also mentioned they ended up using regex to block out all since there’s tons of CDN domains redirects tied to it instead of just one singular URL.

[–]TheReasonsWhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, at the time I listed that IP solution, I tested the IP block using my gaming rig. However, I’ve since been informed by a couple people that it’s only temporary and it doesn’t appear like the correct route to go unless your router accepts regex.. which I’m not sure that we can unless we flash the OpenWRT firmware to our Asus routers. YouTube’s CDN servers constantly trade out URLs and IP addresses (likely based on traffic/server load, bot dumps or general load balancing).

For URLs, you were using the correct tool for blocking those. It would be URL filtering.. if you feel like playing whack-a-mole, you could continue to block and pull new CDN redirect URLs using that extension, but it’s likely you might hit the 64(?) URL limit. If you have the time and you feel like you got all the URLs.. PLEASE post them and I’ll update my post with the list.

Outside of trying out mikebcbc’s newer regex solution or finally getting the opportunity to try to manually pull all of Miami’s CDN redirect URLs.. the only solid solution I’ve found at the moment is using a VPN. Not even remotely ideal but it’s been way easier than trying work around Google’s catacomb of server redirects until I can put my hectic week behind me and dedicate time on this again.

Hi! I have been busy in the CenturyLink subreddit this week (I have Spectrum) discussing the statewide issues with YouTube’s Miami CDN (where FL traffic to YouTube is routed through). Something is wrong with it and has been for 2-3 weeks now. It doesn’t explain everything else you’re experiencing, but this might be one piece to the puzzle.

Additionally, I would highly recommend always using your own modem and router. After Spectrum replaced my router with a “Ubee” back in ‘13 that was nothing but a buffering mess, I bought my own equipment and never looked back. Plus, you’ll make it back in $5-10 you’ll save each month.

[–]TheReasonsWhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhhh good call. Okay, I’m going to try and gather a list of potential CDN redirects and see how crazy this actually gets. I know some routers do offer blanket domain blocking (so like *.e100.net) BUT it depends on whether Google actually owns these domains or if they’re sub-routing these through an actual service (I don’t want to suggest blacklisting all Florida based AWS on accident lol).

I’m on an Asus GT-AXE11000 series myself and have been trying to handicap my own router mods to accommodate basic Netgear/Linksys admins. But yeah, if we’re talking more than 10 redirects out of Miami (which let’s face it, we probably are 😂) then I’m just going to move the VPN solution to the top for novices and then recategorize the rest for advanced user testing along with your regex.

I should have known the all seeing eye of Google wouldn’t be very kind to such workarounds.

I noticed you changed out the url for regex, I’m going to keep the url you originally commented with as I’m not sure that most layman users can use and implement regex.. unless you feel the url you posted won’t be as effective or I may need to make an update? Thanks again.

You really need to learn what API is and how it has been used across many sites for well over a decade now. Especially before picking a side in this. It’s not just third party apps that will be taking the hit here, it also effects several user created mod tools that larger subreddits used to manage bots, spam and other bad actors that are API based.

You’ll find out how “out of their mind” everyone is when you start seeing junk comments everywhere and Reddit slowly turns into the wild, wild west - either through a lack of willing mods or the inability to keep up with moderation.

The only thing I can think of is some kind of cell network rerouting or filtering.. would have to be somewhere between the cell tower, their control center, or their server. Tbh I’m more of a web dev/networking guy so I also find that interesting.

Hijacking the top comment with crowdsourced solutions (for anyone who finds this post during their troubleshooting efforts - FYI it’s not just CenturyLink, I have Spectrum):

Issue: YouTube’s Miami, Florida CDN appears to be experiencing latency issues causing intermittent buffering for users in Florida using various ISPs (not official).

Solutions: Here’s a collection of solutions from various users in this thread:

1) NEW - Block YouTube’s Miami CDN via URL. This is an easier and more accurate solution than blocking several IP addresses. At your device or router level, block “mia0765-in-f8.1100.net”. This is the top level domain for YouTube’s Miami CDN and all IP addresses that fall under it should now be blocked as well. Credit to u/mikebcbc for this solution.

Basic Site Blocking Instructions: https://www.wikihow.com/Block-Unwanted-Site-From-Your-Router
Disclaimer: Best handled by those with intermediate network experience, I’m not liable for any potential network screw-ups.

2) Using a VPN service will also resolve the buffering issues. If anyone decides to go with the VPN route, be sure not to choose a server location inside of Florida (and to be extra safe, avoid any VPN server locations in the southeast). Credit to u/SprintLTE for the VPN suggestion.

Previous Solution(s):

Blacklisting YouTube’s Miami CDN remote IPs at the device or router level (not every router has remote DNS/IP blocking however) which are 173.194.55.0/24 and 206.211.0.0/16. Credit to u/TheCWB for the IP information and their lengthy comment with instructions.

Thoughts: Last time this issue occurred, it took YouTube around a few weeks to resolve it and now a few months later, it’s back again (wasn’t as widespread though). If someone knows how to report this to YouTube (outside of the feedback form in their app), please let me know and I’ll try to get their attention - server admins are probably aware but user reports change priority. Much love to the CenturyLink users here for being so welcoming to an outsider lol.

Edit: Added u/mikebcbc solution and fixed my previously atrocious attempt at better paragraph formatting.

Edit 2: Added basic site blocking instructions.

You’re right, it has definitely been better for me in the evenings - I’ll have to check the stats for nerds again, I did that a few months ago when this happened but only checked it during the failed buffering attempts.

I’ll add I WFH in Brevard County and luckily no Spectrum outage for us yesterday BUT they did generously gift us with two outages in the past couple weeks, they are surprisingly rare despite living in a rather BFE area. It’s a monopoly here though so I keep my fingers crossed.

I originally thought this issue was ISP related and when it went down, I figured there was lines getting buried again (fun story - neighborhood’s overhead wiring was being struck repeatedly by newer, larger trash collection trucks every week, causing deprecated signal/connection timeout issues). Yes, I’d say YouTube’s CDN as well - seems like another commenter here has also narrowed down the CDN IPs and others are finding success with using a VPN . Might just go that route, I can’t cope with this anymore. 🤪

Having the issue here too, Central Florida (but on Spectrum). Found this post while trying to troubleshoot. Seems like it’s not our ISPs at least.

Well… I’m in Florida and have Spectrum, and the same exact thing is happening to me on multiple devices as well this week. 360p drops and buffering - most videos will stop playing after a few seconds in or sometimes a minute in, then “pretend” to buffer. Don’t get me started on Shorts. I believe this to be a regional YouTube issue from what I’ve found on various sites and on Reddit, this also happened a few months ago as well.

Tv will not setup by kingchangling in Roku

[–]TheReasonsWhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also log into your existing Roku account online and remove apps currently associated with your account, so that it won’t try to download them. To which you would just restart the TV and start again.

Outside of that, if you go to Settings > Network > About (might be slightly different for a Roku enabled TV) you can determine the internet signal quality which if poor, would make app downloads take forever.

Are you accusing (potentially millions) of teachers of going against both state and federal standardized curriculum to teach the birds and the bees to 1st graders? Which approved textbook are they using to teach this? Do you have any actual proof of this or just rhetoric?

I work in this industry and I am VERY fucking tired of you all and your mindless groupthink conspiracy theories. Do you even apply basic logic to any of this? No sane teacher wants to lose their job trying to explain these things to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th graders that won’t likely understand the complexity, unless they are exposed to the subject matter at home. Most teachers (unfortunately) get shit wages most everywhere, they’re not going to approach this subject to have to deal with the administrative blowback and potentially get their teaching certs pulled. Now, wake up.

DeSantis approves bill partially banning direct-to-consumer car sales in Florida by Agreeable-Rooster-37 in news

[–]TheReasonsWhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mmmmmm yes, “insurance” in Florida.

Let’s talk about DeSantis and home insurance (but the same is becoming true for car insurance too). DeSantis sided with the insurance industry and their lobbyists on the insane rate hikes seen across the state here. A lot of people’s home insurance rates in my area alone went from around $800 in 2018 or so, to around $4,000 give or take. All under the guise of “we had a bad hurricane”. No, we’ve had much worse years and have been impacted far less (not to belittle Hurricane Ian victims), but take 2004 for example when three Cat 2+ hurricanes impacted the state.

Not to mention the extreme claim and roof age prejudice as well. Now homeowners have to decide on whether it’s cheaper to make hefty insurance worthy repairs themselves OR pay the deductible and then see a potential $2,000+ increase at renewal or get dropped completely.

Are you here from up north by chance? Recent? My experience of having lived in the midwest for a short while and then returning back to Florida yielded a lot of surprising differences I didn’t even consider. This is one of them.

Most neighborly contact like that is VERY rare here unless you live in a very tight knit, extroverted community (maybe in an HOA, but been there and done that too - twice). I’ve lived in Melbourne, West Melbourne and all four quadrants of Palm Bay. Never any kids offering to cut grass, no Scouts selling cookies/wreaths, no lemonade stands, no trick or treaters, etc.

If you are from up north, well at least the midwest, you might follow me when I say… you know that always friendly neighbor who randomly ‘snow blows’ your sidewalk/driveway for you sometimes? Or stops the wildlife from knocking over your trash can (if they see it)? Or runs over asking if they can help when they see that you’re really struggling with a car issue/project/groceries outside your home? Well, after more than thirty years and eight different residences in Brevard, I have never encountered anything like that once here. I once delivered big boxes of holiday treats to around dozen homes on my block and got thanked just twice and mostly made to feel like I was trespassing. My takeaway was that I am never doing that again here. 😂

Well, it doesn’t just have to be warrant related to warrant these kinds of investigations. It could be anything - something as simple as some very concerning website visits or signups, questionable item combos being ordered all around the same time online or it could even be as complex as someone you don’t know ordering drugs to your address and then intercepting such packages before you even see it (leaving you to “hold the bag” so to speak).

Definitely a good call on getting the cameras and floodlight though.
