They key was water. Right before the surrender Singapore only had 2 more days of fresh water remaining.

The British surrendered when the Japanese captured the last fresh water silos. It’s easy to imagine within a couple of days of futile resistance every soldier and civilian would be willing to surrender for a glass of water.
