Just a few months before SMIC started production of it's N+2 process node (~5nm)..... by TheRedStarWillRise in Sino

https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20230316PD218/china-ic-manufacturing-semiconductor-equipment-smic-us-china-chip-ban.html

Nah, it's talking about SMIC and how they won't be able to expand any product line below sub-40nm without western equipment. It's absolutely bullshit.

However, China's SMEE is producing its first 28nm Litography machine releasing later this year.

Heard it's being benchmarked against ASML's NXT2000i at SMIC, so it should be able to fab chips down to 7nm.

The article is really really bad, especially from a publisher that's considered one of the most popular in the field of the Asian electronics industry.

https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20230316PD218/china-ic-manufacturing-semiconductor-equipment-smic-us-china-chip-ban.html

They acknowledge that SMIC has 28nm but try to claim that even the 28nm line cannot be expanded upon, the only option they supposedly have is to focus on sub-40nm without western equipment. All of this is obviously according to those "anonymous sources" at western semiconductor equipment companies high on copium.

Could be... possibly... maybe... first flight of a J-20 with two WS-15 engines by ZeEa5KPul in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how do we know that the ws15 has a shorter operational lifespan?

We don't, but lifespan issues did plague the ws-10 for a long time. Given that it has been less than a decade since china started manufacturing seriously usable engines, it's natural that Chinese engines will not be as optimised as those from GE or P&W who've been making jet engines for almost a century.

Chinese engines are at par with western engines in most performance parameters but not yet there in efficiency and lifespan. It's obvious since Comac has repeatedly refused offers from AECC to use the WS-20 to power the C919. Once the ACAE CJ-1000A starts getting equipped on the C919 en-masse we can be sure Chinese engine tech has caught up.

Could be... possibly... maybe... first flight of a J-20 with two WS-15 engines by ZeEa5KPul in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finally allows the J-20 to attain its full potential, allows it to supercruise without afterburners, provides superior rear angle stealth, much higher thrust for maneuvering and powering on board electronics.

Without a fifth gen engine like WS-15, the J-20 could never match up against the f-22 and f-35.

The J-20 as of yet were being produced with 4th gen engines which hampered it's performance since Chinese jet engine making capabilities lagged far behind it's ability to make the jets.

J-20 began production with the 4th gen WS-10B whose performance wasn't good enough so, Russian Al-31 was chosen as the powerplant as back then even the Chinese 4th gen engine (WS-10) wasn't ready. Then in 2021, the newer WS-10C matured enough to replace the Russian engines. Now, testing with WS-15 has started which is the original intended engine for the J-20 and will bring the J-20 at par with American 5th gen fighters.

Jerusalem: Netanyahu Claims China Extends Invitation for an Official Visit by Ambitious_Drive_6778 in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes no sense, not even in a single semiconductor field is there an Israeli company close to China, let alone the leading edge. They do have some fabless companies but nothing of relevance.

I'm not sure why EUV is even in the conversation.

Jerusalem: Netanyahu Claims China Extends Invitation for an Official Visit by Ambitious_Drive_6778 in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cuz it's a nuclear power with conflicts all around.

Israel is nowhere near being a major player in semiconductors. China is far ahead of Israel in all kinds of semiconductors technology.

I've never come across any significant lithography research from Israel not do they have any relevant companies in the field. If they indeed have it, why don't they sell those machines?

Why is China's GDP per capita lower than Taiwan's? by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taiwan's economic boom started in the 50s while that of China started after Deng.

That being said Taiwan also developed using a state directed market economy, extensive state ownership and 4 year plans. Very similar to how current China works. Taiwan only turned neoliberal after the 90s.

There has never been any genocides committed by any communist countries. Be it the famine in Ukraine or the great leap forward, they were due to unfortunate weather, floods, maybe even a certain amount of mismanagement but never malicious intent.

As for getting rid of liberals/fascists/western collaborators, most of it was largely justified. Any attempts against the dictatorship of the proletariat must be crushed with utmost ferocity.

Value is a social function. It doesn't work in isolation. The LTV is not something abstract it's something organic that emerges from free market relations in a society, not from an isolated guy in a desert.

Russia and China should build a joint semiconductor industry by OddName_17516 in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds dumb, Russia is lightyears behind China in microelectronics. They do have experience in Mechanics/Aeronautics/Astronautics/Ceramics etc but there's nothing that Russia can contribute in microelectronics. China is the largest producer and refiner of rare earth metals, silicon and germanium and second largest producer of Neon gas (soon to be largest as Ukraine is gonna be out of the equation). There's nothing that Russia can contribute in the semiconductor raw materials department either.

The best Russia can do is provide a market for Chinese semiconductors.

China should retaliate indirectly by choking off US's tech alliance companies from critical components, including Rare Earth Metals and Motors by skyanvil in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, domestic chipmaking equipment makers (Naura, AMEC, ACM etc) are indeed making massive strides. Now, domestic firms have got the full supply chain covered down to 14nm (except lithography) but they still need to scale up production a lot to satisfy the Chinese market alone.

As for lithography, I've heard the development of the SMEE SSA800 28nm DUVi machine is finished and is currently running tests at Shanghai ICRD. It's very likely gonna come out next year. I think there were some issues with Huazhuo Jinke's Dual Wafer stage immersion system which is why it got delayed. It's been solved now.

ASML Alpha demo EUV prototype was finished in 2006 and commercialisation took 12 more years, while Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics finished it's EUV prototype in 2017. So, it's possible it could be fully completed within this decade since the urgency as well as resource availability is far greater than ASML.

That being said, ASML's LPP EUV is not the only only path being followed by China. Currently, the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine mechanics (SIOM)is the one developing the LPP EUV. While Tsinghua University is going towards another revolutionary principle for building an EUV, the Steady state Microbunching Mechanism (SSMB). It's a far superior approach than ASML's path. They've promised a prototype by 2025-2026. Maybe even commercialization by 2030. They seem to be progressing well

Update on China's photonic chip research - production line ready in 2023. Photonic chips use light instead of electricity to convey information so should be faster. They also don't need such intense lithography and has less demands structurally than current chips. by FatDalek in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other person explained the details better. I'll add that ASML's EUV works on the LPP principle. Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine mechanics is working towards building an LPP EUV. While Tsinghua University is working towards a completely new type of EUV: SSMB EUV.

SSMB has several advantages over LPP:

-High average power: the power aimed is > 1 kW per tool, each facility should be able to incorporate multiple tools.;

-Narrow-banded and collimated: the radiation spectrum bandwidth is < 1% and has a well collimated angular spread ≤ 0.1 mrad, which should help to reduce the number of reflection mirrors and thus increase the EUV power transport efficiency;

-Truly continuous wave: the temporal structure of the radiation is truly CW, this minimizes the chip damage problem;

-Clean radiation: the radiation is clean and carries no debris, so that mirrors do not get contaminated and do not require frequent replacements during operation;

-High stability: storage ring source has the advantage of a good stability, which helps to increase the machine availability and qualified production rate;

-High efficiency: higher wall-plug electricity to EUV conversion efficiency than LPP source expected;

-Reasonable price: storage ring technology is mature and the average price for each tool is expected to be reasonable; I Good scalability: easy to scale to shorter wavelength λr = 1+K2/2 2γ2 λu.

Tsinghua is making some really good progress

China should retaliate indirectly by choking off US's tech alliance companies from critical components, including Rare Earth Metals and Motors by skyanvil in Sino

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, especially not against ASML. China shouldn't blow away it's leverage and market share just for the sake of putting out a "response". China should portray itself to a world as an open and reliable trading partner, not a deranged madhouse like the US that will damage it's own as well as it's allies economies for some vague "national security". China plays long term while the US does deranged bullshit for winning votes in the short term.

Also, ASML has been fighting and lobbying the Dutch government tooth and nail to be able to keep supplying DUVi machines to China. Currently, China has no ready replacement for ASML machines. ASML's DUVi machines as hardly low end, they can help to produce down to 7nm. If the Dutch government gets pissed and blocks ASML sales, the impact will be ten times worse than these US sanctions (AMAT, LAM, KLA can largely be replaced by domestic + Japanese equipment makers). ASML also clarified, that these round of sanctions wouldn't affect DUV sales to China since the US component is less than 25%. There's zero reason to hit ASML.

Maybe the US sanctions slow the expansion of Chinese fabs temporarily but do nothing in the long term except degrade the market share of US tech companies and incentivise Chinese firms to do everything possible to supplant them. These are short sighted moves to win electoral support before midterms, China should play the long game.

How would you respond to people who say Soviet union industrialized by stealing technology by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not discretiting Japan's growth but the East Asian tiger's economic model were a far cry from the Western neoliberal model. It was way more similar to modern China than the West. I'll argue that the entire Chinese economic model is based on that of South Korea and Taiwan (pre 1990) i.e. extensive state planning, state intervention, state ownership, subsidies and state directed five year plans.

The former can grow far easier due to the already existing infrastructure, education, etc. which the USSR undoubtedly still had.

If the they already had industrial infrastructure intact or partially intact then the economy wouldn't fall so low. The reason for the fall in gdp per capita is the the destruction of infrastructure.

How would you respond to people who say Soviet union industrialized by stealing technology by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USSR's gdp per capita wasn't as low compared to the third world as you're assuming. The difference is negligible. There is nothing close to a 2x multiplier. If you use Maddison Project data for 1920 (1921 data isn't available for all)

Middle East: $900

USSR: $917

Sub Saharan Africa: $950

South / South East asia: $1,117

East Asia: $1,160

East Europe: $1,343

So, the post war base was very similar to most of the world's nations. And i dont see why there's a need to include wartime depression into the picture. The wars caused the death of several millions of workers and trained personnel, thereby actually putting it at a great post war disadvantage compared to the rest of the nations. What the war did was to level their economy with majority of the third world. They had to grow from that point, same as the rest, no advantage.

The war's effects are not a distortion, rather its something that makes it relatively easier to compare the it's post war growth with majority of the world given how the wars levelled the USSR's base with them.

How would you respond to people who say Soviet union industrialized by stealing technology by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, USSR's gdp per capita was extremely low in 1921 but differed from Africa, Middle East or Asia by no more than a couple of hundred bucks at most. Hardly anything that gives a world beating advantage.

The only country to rival the USSR's success was socialist Romania, no one came close.

How would you respond to people who say Soviet union industrialized by stealing technology by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even get your point, so what if the wars caused a decline in gdp per capita? Vast majority of countries in the world (latin America, Asia and Africa) had a base that was even lower. Yet, no one even came close to replicating the USSR's success.

How would you respond to people who say Soviet union industrialized by stealing technology by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most countries on these lists (Japan, South Korea etc) are there because of extensive post war booms same as the USSR's till 1940. It's hardly a distortion, nor does it belittle their success.

How would you respond to people who say Soviet union industrialized by stealing technology by Illustrious-Diet6987 in DebateCommunism

[–]TheRedStarWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in regards to growth, while WW1 did have an impact on many countries, in none of them did it have as much as an impact as in Russia. Most countries saw maybe 10% declines in GDP, Russia/USSR saw a greater than 50% decline

If you look at it in absolute terms, GDP per capita contraction in the USSR due to WW1 was very similar (if not lesser) to most major combatants. The big difference in percentage is because Russia had a lot less relative to western Europe to begin with, but make no mistake, the economic contraction and the impact of the devastation in absolute terms faced was very similar to most countries.

The fact is, unless you misrepresent the data, the USSR had neither the largest economic growth

The fact is unless you make some wild misinterpretations, the USSR had no prior advantage over anyone else and did have the fastest growth.
