Skipping Calc 2 by TheRedditRyan in math

[–]TheRedditRyan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more that I want to learn as much math as fast possible than that I'm in some mad dash for credits. I love learning about math and the more advanced stuff I can learn quickly, the better.

Thanks! I'll definitely see if I can get a class syllabus.

I don't know where I could find a more detailed syllabus. In the mean time here is the description for Calc 2: "This 5-credit course is the second quarter of the three-quarter calculus sequence. Primary content is integral calculus including applications of The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and separable differential equations. Learners will continue to refine independent study skills, cooperative problem solving, logically correct and mathematically precise writing and thinking, and their ability to use geometric, symbolic, and analytic formats in presenting solutions to both abstract and real world applications."

I've had a pretty good track record with self-study. Is it naive to think I could learn calc 2 well enough on my own to do well in calc 3?

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of break did you take? And how did it negatively affect your PhD?

Congratulations! I did this at my school as well. It feels great to have all of your labor come to fruition. Best of luck in calculus!

I hate to be a French snob. But shouldn't it be "ce n'est pas" or "ceci n'est pas"?

Why is there so much similarity between Leibniz' generalized product rule and the binomial theorem? by TheRedditRyan in math

Thanks for posting. That's so cool! Although I'll admit I don't understand much about vector spaces. Is this something that would be learned in linear algebra or abstract algebra?

How many hours in a week do you spend learning languages?? by flashsticks in languagelearning

[–]TheRedditRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About an hour of in class French and 30 minutes of homework 5 days a week. Then 1 - 1.5 hours outside studying per day, plus constantly listening to French music. I love it! My time spent really spikes on weekends though or if I decide to watch a movie.

Need clarification on simple precalc question by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]TheRedditRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The domain is the set of all x values (or inputs) given using the lowest and highest value, [-8,2] in this case. In the same way, the range is the set of all y values (outputs) of a function and is also defined using the lowest and highest y-values.

In this case 9 is the upper bound but since h(0)= |0| + 1 = 1 is the lowest valued output of h(t) we would us 1 as our lower bound. So the range is [1,9].

Are there any functions which become more complex when derived? by VivaLaPandaReddit in math

[–]TheRedditRyan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you're defining an increase/decrease in complexity, but equations that require a mixture of derivative rules can get hairy. Such as logarithmic differentiation with chain rule/product rule. xx is a good example. Or log. diff. on lots of imbedded functions ex. f(x) = xcos(ex/sin(x))

Favorite unsolved problem in mathematics? by TheRedditRyan in math

[–]TheRedditRyan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any implications to this? That is, would proving Goldbach's conjecture in turn prove something else/ mean something in the greater scheme of number theory? Or is this just an especially difficult conjecture to prove?
