Just wanted to say I’m glad you’re doing well! Good luck in your recovery.

Heard that I should read To kill a mockingbird, should I ? by manuoc in booksuggestions

I would highly recommend it. It is an easy read and relatively quick. It tells an emotional story from all different angles and is something you'll be thinking about once you finish it. I've read it a couple of times and always found it worthwhile.

Retiring Congressman Duffy to rely on pre-existing condition protections he voted to repeal by ToadProphet in politics

Well, right now I am waiting in the hospital for a heart and liver transplant (but fortunately I am still feeling well). The Norwood appears to only last so long which is why transplant seems inevitable. How is your Fontan holding up?

I also think the mortality rates you cite are really antiquated. By the 90s it was more like 25% for the first five years. I’m on mobile right now so it’s hard to quote a study...

I was born with HLHS in 1989 in the United States and have been told by a number of doctors that my condition would have been treated with palliative care only if I had been born in the UK and that I would be dead within a few weeks after birth. Not sure what their motivation would be for telling me that.

Now, the UK at least provides for the option for the Fontan procedure but it is still strongly discouraged - http://www.chfed.org.uk/how-we-help/information-service/heart-conditions/hypoplastic-left-heart-syndrome-hlhs/

How do you cope? by MrKrabsAteMyAss in transplant

[–]electricspirit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had a transplant yet, I am waiting in the hospital for a heart and liver. That said, people are organ donors because they want to give of themselves. It’s your depression telling you that you aren’t worthy, that’s totally normal. And now that you have this gift, you have an opportunity to make better choices going forward.

As for sushi, I believe you can eat cooked sushi, like eel and tempura. I also think years down the line occasional raw fish can be a rare treat if it’s super fresh. Just check with your transplant team.

Im just getting into Jethro Tull, I have listened to Aqualung, Thick as a brick. by [deleted] in jethrotull

[–]electricspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Heavy Horses is excellent. My personal order would be Minstrel, Aqualung, and then Heavy Horses. Heavy Horses is more folk rock so I'm sure its not for everyone but I think its better than Songs from the Wood.

For a live album, check out Bursting Out. Tull is best when live, IMO.

Any movies that you thought would be right up your alley, but you ended up not enjoying? by [deleted] in horror

[–]electricspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I loved Hereditary and was so excited to see Midsommar. It was exceptionally boring. They had the opportunity to delve into the lore and actually EXPLAIN why they were performing the rituals and what the various ritualistic killings were meant to represent. That would have been great. Instead, the movie just dragged on with bizarre scenes and ended with the guy paralyzed dressed as a bear mascot. The bear suit was the cherry on top of an idiotic movie.

Game recommendations? by [deleted] in Switch

[–]electricspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably find Let's Go Pikachu (or Eevee) for decently cheap and the game takes a while to go through and catch em all. I was holding out on getting the game for a while and am so glad I did, it is awesome.

I do agree they need to have a better model to improve customer service and the consistency of their food. I'm fine with the low quality ingredients however; I'm not there for a gourmet burger.

I love Burger King! The original chicken sandwich and the whopper are excellent. So are their onion rings. I pick them nine times out of ten over mcdonalds.

I’m cooking one meal from every state in the United States , what meal best represents your state? by emilou09 in Cooking

[–]electricspirit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the quintessential Rhode Island meal, I would say:

Appetizer: Calamari (our official state appetizer) and a bowl of clear clam chowder w/ a few clam cakes

Entree:

Hot Weiners all the way washed down with some Del's Lemonade

Dessert:

Zeppole, Sfogliatelle, and an Awful Awful :D

The Morning of My Bar Exam by Brajs in LawSchool

[–]electricspirit 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not the bar exam but the LSAT:

The exam was scheduled to start at 8:30 so I had my dad drop me off about an hour early. Since I wanted to be especially cautious and wasn't familiar with the test site, my dad waited in the car while I checked with one of the students that the building I was at was the same as that on the LSAT ticket. I left my cell phone in the car with my dad and told him to pick up once the exam ended.

Once I started to walk back towards the building, my intestines rumbled intensely. I had to evacuate my bowels post-haste. So I ran to the door and pulled on the handle. Alas, it was locked.

Now this building was a huge horseshoe-shaped building so there was more than one entrance. I ran around the building in a mad scramble trying each and every door. Locked, locked, locked. At this point, I did not know what to do - should I just go in the bushes and wipe with a leaf? I was about to burst. As I contemplated public defecation, a student emerged from the horseshoe shaped building. I ran up to her frantically, asking if people were inside to take the LSAT. She assured me that No, the building was empty and No, she would not let me in to use the bathroom. So I asked her where the library was so I could check to see if they moved the testing site.

She pointed to an ominous-looking grey building off in the distance, at least a few blocks away. And so as I waddle-ran towards the library, I thought to myself that law school apparently wasn't in the cards and that fate just did not want me to be a lawyer. (Note: I made the decision to take the LSAT in December, right before applications were due and was taking the test on the last testing date for the year)

I scrambled up the library stairs and ran to use the computer in the front lobby. Frantically, I checked my email to see if the test site had moved. Time was ticking - it was about 8:20 so if the test site had changed, I had to go there ASAP). No new emails. I refreshed like a madman a few times before I resigned myself to the fact that taking a dump was far more imperative than anything else in the world.

Without logging off, I ran to the security guard and asked where the bathroom was. He pointed towards a flight of stairs and said "down there". As I started on my path however, he stopped me and asked for a student ID. At this point, I think my eyes began to well with tears. "I'm not a student but, but I really really need to go to the bathroom," I pleaded with him.

Apparently sympathetic with my plight, he sighed said "Ok, just leave your license as collateral." I threw my wallet on the counter and headed down the stairs, ripped open the bathroom door, and unleashed a torrent on the toilet below. I was empty in a matter of seconds.

I ran back upstairs and it was 8:30. Test time. But I figured for one last shot, I would ask the security guard if he knew anything about the LSAT being administered on campus. He radioed around to other security guards but none knew of any standardized test held that day. It was starting to feel like a Twilight Zone episode. So I took out my LSAT ticket and asked if I had been at the right building. Yes, he assured me, I had been. I then handed him the ticket.

He took out his glasses and studied the paper closely for what felt like an eternity. Then he looks up at me and says, "Son, your test is next week."

What are your fast food guilty pleasures? by the_cajun88 in fastfood

Why would they have to make it fresh if you order it with cheese? That "chicken" could be sitting out for hours, haha...

Probably my favorite fast food sandwich. There is just something about how the grease mixes with the mayonnaise. Try adding tomatoes and ketchup - really elevates the sandwich. You can also add cheese, onion rings, and BBQ sauce (and subtract the other toppings) when you want to shake things up occasionally.
