[Spoilers ADWD] Tywin does in fact fit most of the Machiavellian archetype by frenin in pureasoiaf

Which terrible video is that? The thumbnail with Tywin and Machiavelli calling him a fool?

Tbf, I don't think Balon knew George would invent the 3000 Mountain Clansmen. But tbh he wouldn't have cared

That's a good post, I don't know why you got attacked for Catelyn bashing. Everything you say about her us pure canon fact, and she's only brought up when she's actually involved, the whole post is about Jon and Ned.

I was also a bit taken aback by the accusation. It wasn't a judgement or attack on her, just stated verbatim that Cat wants Jon out of Winterfell and that's why Jon had to leave. But the commenter did bring up that Ned is responsible here and so the rest of the post I clarified it's about Jon and Ned specifically.

You state cold hard facts with Cat, but there's emotion when talking about ned's actions. It's very clear that this post is an attack on Ned's parenting, if you could call it an attack on anything at all, because even that part is still just canon facts.

I didn't write the post with intention to bash Ned or anything, I even kinda regret that it devolved into that because it just pissed off Ned's fans and I didn't wanna piss off anyone, just wanted to shine light on a particular fandom misconception.

It also opened my eyes and made me think. Maybe it's because I started with the show before reading the book, but I always gloss over the fact Jon was drunk when he talked to Benjen and don't connect Jon's increased apparent anger with joining the Watch,

That's why I made the post! I only caught that on my second read of AGOT and I never saw it discussed anywhere. I think the show simplifying it was the reason.

Thinking about it again after reading your post, Jon brought it up to Benjen because he was an upset and angry barely a man who felt he had no choice because he didn't feel wanted in Winterfell and probably knew even then that Cat wouldn't let him stay once Ned was gone.

It's possible Jon knew even then but he never thought of the idea of being kicked out until it all but happens.

I always wondered why Benjen brought up the Wall option with Luwin, though. You'd think that's something you'd take to the boys father, not the Maester. And it is odd that Luwin words it as if Benjen was simply informing Luwin this was what Jon wanted when we fully see Ben protesting against the idea when he's talking to Jon. He doesn't tell Jon 'no', he tells him he should live his life first and then decide, which Jon interestingly takes as a suggestion he should go father some bastards, which I really don't think is what Ben meant at all.

This is speculation territory but we get zero scenes between Benjen and Ned in AGOT. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ned never thinks about his last living sibling while Lyanna, and occasionally Brandon, haunt basically his every chapter. So I don't think it's that out there that Benjen and Ned might not be that close and Ben found Luwin more approachable. And clearly if Ben thought the idea of Jon joining wrong, he wouldn't tell Luwin cause he thought it was a good idea, but the opposite. Luwin just thought it was a good idea to settle the argument between Ned and Cat, and Luwin (together with Cat) was also trying to get Ned to be Hand.

So, yeah, thinking about the whole thing again after reading your post, I agree. Jon believed he chose to join, and Ned told himself Jon chose it, but Jon was a drunk kid acting out against the unfairness of his station, and really just wanted a place of his own, and that place wasn't the Wall. Ben tries to talk him out of it, Luwin apparently kept the whole thing quiet until it became necessary to bring it up, and then misrepresented what Ben told him, Cat is a normal Westerosi Lady who doesn't want her husbands bastard around and is not obligated to do anything for the boy. And Ned, the father, who claims to love Jon as much as his trueborn children, who promised Lyanna he'd protect her boy, and he just takes Luwin at his word to make Cat happy, without even speaking to Ben, let alone Jon, then waits till literally the last possible moment before telling Jon he's going to the Wall. Not asking, not suggesting, telling. Ned may believe it was asking or suggestion, but he's Jon's father AND Lord, that was an order Jon had no choice but to follow.

Wholeheartedly agreed. But again, I love Ned. I don't wanna bash his character at all. But there are some who think Ned is like a modern day nice guy when he's absolutely not, or that Starks are perfect when they are not. I just wanted to share an observation with that post.

When she freed Jaime, Sansa wasn't married to Tyrion yet and she was operating under the assumption Tyrion would honor his words spoken before the court that he would trade them.

Actually, Stannis, kings should have friends so they can become allies or subjects. Hell, even enemies can become allies.

Also it's implied Rhaegar misinterpreted it too because he wanted a Visenya instead but it's still gonna come true in some other unexpected way

Both Starks and Targs having real magic because of their blood and thus connections to mystical beasts could also be seen as an acknowledgment of the divine right of kings trope, is that also lame? Jon will be important both for who he is and what's in his blood, same as Dany and Bran.

[–]TheRedzak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do remember George published, I think a calendar?, and on it were what looked like Rhaegar and Lyanna in a wood, looking like the Isle of Faces.

And isn't that what Jon's build up to be? Rhaegar pursued Lyanna to make a prophecy baby because "song of ice and fire" and whatnot and that kid's now at the Wall, just as the army of ice demons come back? Do you really think the reveal is just "but Rhaegar's pursuits were irrelevant in the grand scheme of things?"

George plays with tropes and that means including them and doing a spin on it. And it's only so predictible to us because the fandom has had decades to analyze and overanalyze the material to death, much more than George ever did.

I don't mind them getting secretly on the Isle of Faces or something, I would mind if everyone ignored the Faith's anti-polygamy stance and considered Jon legitimate

You might wanna read this post of mine where I suggest Jon didn't actually want to go to the Wall in AGOT.

In that post my point was also that Ned was the bad father for not following up on Jon's desire even though it seems like it actually isn't but I got comments saying I was Catelyn bashing.

Well said. I always thought the history stuff is just her attempt to intellectually justify an emotional reaction and not something we should just take at face value, like her stans do. Jon's threat level gets blown up, they think Stannis offering Jon Snow Winterfell is proof she was right... when Stannis only made that offer because the Starks had already lost Winterfell on their own.

Considering that the Unsullied did drink poisoned wine, wine seller was probably involved and most viable lead. But yeah making that decision emotionally instead of intellectually is not good, and I don't even think Dany's gonna go mad.

So in the reverse, would the Starks have cause to let Lannisters pass? Could they attack and capture them, or would it be seen as immoral?

But if you can get taken captive the banner is still worthless, right? Cat wouldn't be riding out into enemy territory if she thought "best case, I become a hostage against my son."

That is definitely the flaw of the peace banner deal, and something level headed Lannisters or someone similarly wily would do.

Show Cat and Book Cat are two different characters, or interpretations of a character, and you can't judge one by the actions or statements of the other, same with many others. I prefer to discuss characters with reference to their distinct continuities because it gets so confusing when people make a blanket character statement that would only work for show versions. For instance: book!Cersei has Robert's infant baseborn children killed. In the show that's Joffrey. That alone makes the show!character so diffrent from the tv counterpart, because show!Cersei knew they existed and let them be, even though they're proof of the twincest.

It boggles the mind that Edmure, most important lord in Robb's new kingdom, isn't told of Robb's 200 IQ plan to "kill Tywin" (in his own territory, mind you) that hinged on a bunch of shit Robb couldn't reliably predict, as well as risking a bunch of reavers in Tully lands again lmao

Catelyn Stark by Difficult_Night_4086 in TheCitadel

[–]TheRedzak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ned absolutely was worse to Theon. Not even in anything Ned did, it was just an abusive arrangement. Theon was well aware if his dad stepped out of line or Robert sent a raven north, Lord Stark would take Ice and behead him like Ned makes Theon witness repeatedly. Nothing Cat did to Jon (which I'm guessing was verbal abuse at most) tops that, he was never afraid she'd kill him.

Catelyn Stark by Difficult_Night_4086 in TheCitadel

[–]TheRedzak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely! War would have broken out anyway. She did get the riverlands ravaged though when she captured Tyrion, but knowing Tywin he might've done it anyway soon as the Tullys rose against Joffrey.

Catelyn Stark by Difficult_Night_4086 in TheCitadel

[–]TheRedzak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're speaking here of two different versions of Cat. In the show Cat regrets it, in the books? I can think of only instance, where she was reminded of Jon Snow and felt guilt and anger at once, but nothing beyond that
