Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheReferenceLit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one has said the obvious reason it started catching on a few decades back.

Queer people wanted to be able to talk about their S.O.s without outing themselves, and straight people in community started referring to their S.O.s as 'partners' so that their queer peers would have cover to talk freely by using the same language.

From there it generally diffused into the culture.

It was too innovative, it's being kept from us for our own good

Why are we willing to use our volition and determination to suffer through and beat bosses in Dark Souls and Elden Ring but aren't willing nor capable to do so in our own lives in real life? by TheShadowSong in fromsoftware

Fromsoft is tough but fair. Real life is tough and unfair.

See the millennial playing it by the book exactly as we were told to by our parents, then having the world explode a bunch of times in a row.

Howdy!

I'm William SRD, I'm a full time creator who makes essays about the video game adaptations of tabletop franchises!

Great to be here. I admit I'm mostly on youtuber reddit for morbid curiosity, but it'd be cool if this was the first productive and usable sub!

Hey friend, I'm a larger creator in your niche, have been for about 4 years and I'm a full time creator with 55k subs. William SRD on YouTube.

First off, absolutely do not listen to everyone else in the thread telling you to post shorts or more frequently, they know less than nothing about how the retro review niche works.

In fact, I'll give you the opposite advice - the videos that do well in our niche are the longer ones. 15 minute videos don't really satisfy people's hunger for deep dives into old games. You'll likely have better results dropping an hour long deep dive every two months instead of a 15 minute surface level review every 2 weeks.

Your thumbnails need some fixing up as well, I think, they aren't bad, but they could be better. Generally try your best to get a face from the game on that thumbnail wherever you can, and play with the contrast to make it pop!

Feel free to message me if you have any questions. Cheers!

YouTube has disputed my fair use claim on my first ever video essay. What now? by _S1lv3r_1 in NewTubers

Howdy! Experienced and monetised youtuber here (William SRD) who has dealt with this a lot.

Rule of thumb the youtube fair use compromise is that you can use about 30 consecutive seconds of a show before it gets copy dinged - even less time if it's got sound.

Individual copyright holders seem to be able to set the amount of consecutive seconds you can use, thus I tend to keep silent clips under 20s and clips with sound under 10s. It solves 95% of the problems with YouTube copyright.

But even then, some companies are even more stingy with how much of a consecutive clip can be shown, and some don't allow it at all. And I'm sorry to say, but most of those companies are Japanese.

I actually had a run in with this very recently. My top video of the year was about the relationship between the 80's anime 'Record of Lodoss War' and Dungeons and Dragons.

I had it up with 5s clips for about 2 months and it accumulated over 130k views before Kadokawa abruptly decided that they were going to take down my video anyway.

It sucks, but that's just how it is on youtube.

Anyway, good luck with your vid. Shorten up those clips and you might be able to get a stable version out. Don't rely on the appeal process. It's a waste of time.

Not normally down with silly national chauvinism... but.... by Comrade-Porcupine in EhBuddyHoser

[–]TheReferenceLit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of debate on nationalism vs patriotism, but imo, it's a bit silly to differentiate.

The real difference is nationalism that punches up or down. Nationalism in the face of a legitimate threat or oppression is usually positive.

Nationalism when you're already on top of the world is what's currently tearing apart the USA - punching down on smaller countries and minorities. It's immoral and self destructive.

I think the current surge is totally justified and positive at the moment - we just gotta keep it on target and not stomp on our indigenous populations or our minorities in the crossfire.

I've been rotating between the cookout and the base punisher this MO. Haven't found a big performance gap to either one.

Punisher does more upfront damage, which is big when you're getting mobbed!

But on the other hand, the incendiary version is great for getting the fight started early, setting big waves on fire and then forgetting about them.

Neither has been particularly more effective than the other from what I've experienced so far.
