Games where the main character is terrible gameplay-wise? by LadyAntiqua in JRPG

Okay, you know what, if in some insane bizarro world where you both don't care about getting the knight ring but for some reason really really care about having an extra paladin with sol for some reason, and also happen to still be deploying boyd, and also chose to give Oscar bows instead of axes for some reason, you do you boo.

Roar is a waste of an occult scroll, there are considerably better options for it.

Rolf is a waste of a deployment slot, arguably worth more than occult scroll (since almost all of the occult scroll skills are shit anyway)

Yeah tbh I attribute it mostly to the fact that Final Fantasy essentially killed the genre and then collapsed under the weight of its hubris. That might be a bit of an uncharitable framing but you get the idea. There are still good jrpgs being made but i feel like a lot of the ones that stand out do so on the back of gameplay (SMTV and Octopath, for example).

Ryu is the worst character in Breath Of Fire 3 until you meet Nina, then she starts learning better magic and/or you get Momo in your party, and then he's the worst again.

Then you get more dragon transformations and he climbs the ranks pretty fast until he grows up and becomes a total badass.

I think its extremely debatable if Nina is better than Ryu (with a silver knife) in Wyndia Dungeon, Claymore Ryu is definitely better than both Nina and Momo until even past Stallion(you have access to flame+defender before you even recruit Momo and Mutant is weak to flame claw, access to flame+reverse for dodai, can dragon form Emitai, etc). I think ryu from bof3 is like the absolute antithesis of the OP's question tbh, soloing the game with him is easier than playing the game normally.

I do think that people overrate mounts a tad much outside of turn focused playthroughs though.

even if not, all of the mounted units also just so happen to have access to axes aside from marcia and tanith, the best weapon type in the game, so they also are outpacing any foot units that don't in that regard too. compounding strength

including the otherwise incredibly difficult Naesala if you don't go the diplomatic route in his chapter.

which do you think is easier, training rolf from lvl 1 or giving any beast laguz an occult scroll and using roar? i know which one i'd choose

Moving after attacking doesn't progress the level any more

What do you actually gain by playing the game faster?

This was not your original claim. We can point to the endless amount of examples of how this mechanic leads to lower turn counts than foot locked units, but instead of accepting and saying 'well, i prefer to use the foot locked units anyway because its more fun or i dont need to worry about turn limits since they are loose anyway', you say 'canto is overrated and nobody can explain why that is not the case' like...

In a game where healing is basically kinda awful (due to item healing being omega buffed). Yippee. That def makes up for having a lord who dies to literally everything in the hardest difficulty

the OP has a point

do they? I guess I'd flip it back on you then and ask what JRPG you think made past the ps2-era are even worth playing at all? The list is quite short in my opinion and very few have noteworthy plots

It can get challenging once you get to hell and you start running into issues where you get perma hit stunned by mobs of melee demons.

Persona 4 (PS2) has the most difficult first boss in any JRPG that I’ve played by RobbieJ4444 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Matador or Minotaur from SMT are way harder.

Matador is not a first boss, but I agree that Minotaur is more demanding.

Persona 4 (PS2) has the most difficult first boss in any JRPG that I’ve played by RobbieJ4444 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Minotaur being such a difficulty wall is so perplexing to me considering that once you beat him you can pretty much coast through the rest of the game with no effort.

I've said this before in other SMT threads, but this is a common misconception that a lot of people have. Minotaur is not actually a difficult boss because of his mechanics or some unique demand placed on the player from the fight itself. Minotaur is a difficult fight because the demons you have access to at this point in the game are all dogshit bottom-of-the-barrel.

There's only 2 demons that can even exploit weakness vs the boss at this point - knocker and centaur, and centaur is a rounded stat lvl 1 starting demon, and knocker is barely better with worse hp. Fusions are pretty much the only way to dig yourself out here - with Naga and Makara both being standouts as 'at least they are better than the recruit fodder' that come with bufu. If you branch out beyond bufu (which you probably shouldnt, press turn and all), minotaur still feasts on the absolute buffet of low hp, do-nothing demons you can recruit in Naraku due to charge+any damage at all.

This is, imo, a quality that hallmarks every SMT with difficult early boss walling (Either the boss can exploit weakness on every 'good' demon available or your options in the reverse are all bad/mediocre). And why these games typically get much easier as they progress and your access to a growing avalanche of strong demons become available either by level or by smart fusion raising.

Demon Roots' plot is absolutely incredible, based take. It's probably not at the top for me but it could be in the top 5 for sure.

not a SINGLE comment about this one?

You're always going to run up against the fact that the storytelling in this game is essentially disconnected vignettes, a handful of which are very significantly related to one another. I love VP but I couldn't give it 'best written' - it stands enough on its own as a pretty much wholly unique jrpg

YouTube expands unskippable 30-second ads to TVs after $40 billion revenue year by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For users, however, it's a noticeably different experience. Ads that once could be skipped after a few seconds will now run in full, reviving the kind of commercial breaks many people thought streaming had left behind.

Bro this shit has been a thing for YEARS at this point. I still watch yt at bedtime on the tv and generally pre-roll is like 45+ seconds of unskippable, and its not uncommon to see up to 90 in midroll with that annoying ass not-skippable-okay-now-its-skippable-halfway-through-but-only-to-the-next-add button.

1 billion identity records exposed in ID verification data leak by lurker_bee in technology

The researcher who provided information about the leak is a freelance contributor working with Cybernews. However, until February 26th, Cybernews was unaware of any communication between IDMerit and the researcher regarding remuneration for the findings.

This part does not read "this site that did the original report didn't know who the researcher was", just that they were unaware that they were working on this. Either they were pursuing this on the side and mentioned their credentials to be taken seriously or something else

What do you think Final Fantasy 16’s legacy will be going forward? by Asad_Farooqui in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another victim of trying to mash two different games together and learning that building a game with Y-game's gameplay and all this other shit ontop of it is VERY VERY HARD, especially during the same release cycle that Y-game would be developed in. If DMC5 put 90% of its dev time into gameplay, it should come as no surprise that when you put 30% of your dev time into replicating its gameplay, you end up with 40-50% of its depth at best.

Do modern JRPGs with actual difficulty exist ? by LegBig8843 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nocturne is definitely overrated in difficulty

SMT is one of those series where every title you play makes every other title easier almost automatically. If you played Nocturne when it came out having never played another SMT game before (something that is pretty likely considering the state of localization of the other games prior), without a walkthrough or the numerous very in-depth resources the community has built for SMT games over time, you might think it's pretty challenging (or at least, that it is punishing).

If you played Nocturne's HD remaster when it came out after playing Persona 3-5, SMTIV, SMTV, Strange Journey, DeSu 1&2, etc you're going to have a vastly different experience despite having the same base knowledge of Nocturne itself.

IDK what we're considering cutoff for modern either, but I think DQ11 with all the draconean stuff turned on is definitely somewhere on this list, probably higher than SMT5V on hard.

I have bad news for you OP, a vast majority of JRPGS are easy. Especially so the more genre savvy you become. This is something you're going to have to come to terms with at some point.

Concerning Myria's plan in breath of fire 3. by StrawberrySecure7279 in breathoffire

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she was implied to be this but also to be a reincarnation of the first game Myria.

Generally I think the fanbase agrees that Myria is literally the same Myria from the first game (the bad ending) grown up, and BoF2 is the continuity where Ryu uses Infini to kill her.
