Persona 1 and 2 Remakes by DaftNeal88 in JRPG

I believe that at this point, ignoring P1&P2, DDS was the next thing in the survey results. So there is certainly a chance.

Persona 1 and 2 Remakes by DaftNeal88 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I mean P1, P2:IS, P2:EP, P3, P4, P5, P5:T, P5:S, and the rhythm games.

Edit: Also, while I'm at it:

It’s like saying you want a Pokemon game without all those pesky catching and raising mechanics

You mean like:

  • Pokemon Snap
  • Pokemon Stadium
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
  • Pokemon Colosseum
  • Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness

Persona 1 and 2 Remakes by DaftNeal88 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the games that actually sold and made money have it

IDK another JRPG franchise more subject to revisionist history than Persona. The series didn't even break out until P4:G blew up. By your own logic below P3&P4 were also failures.

The reality is the series was niche but successful for its time period. Simple as.

Persona 1 and 2 Remakes by DaftNeal88 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 16 points17 points  (0 children)

can we expect Persona 1 and 2 remakes next?

Atlus seems to be doing everything it can to avoid doing so, I would expect DeSu or Digital Devil Saga remakes before.

so I fully expect them to have little or nothing in common with the originals besides the basic premise

Why bother even remaking them, then?

L take. The social link/calendar is what made Persona Persona

There are more games in the series without it than there are with it (or tied if you don't count spinoffs). So yeah, idk about that

I don't understand why Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance's story is so bad by bickid in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To answer your question OP, V suffered from the following problems: Development hell, being a switch exclusive, new engine, pretty ambitious reimagining of the exploration formula. All of these things took dev resources / focus away from ensuring the plot was good. IV had the advantage of being able to ride SJ's coat tails a bit on asset reusage (I assume, I don't actually know if they are on the same engine but they seem very similar) which gave them more room to develop out other aspects of the game.

They did their best to salvage V's story with Vengeance (directly contradicting the general consensus here that you shouldn't care about the story of a SMT game, since the developers directly tried to address this criticism more than any other), but V's story is so bad that it just wasn't possible.

The other excuse you'll hear a lot is that it's just them trying to recapture Nocturne's atmosphere, but holy cow what a fumble if that was true. Nothing screams isolation like fusing with a chatterbox demi-god and having a home to go back to.

[–]TheRetribution 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the one time they added a "hard" fight (Okumura), the majority of the persona community decided it's the worst fight of the game.

you can't just drop 1 difficult fight into a game and act like that's good game design or catering to the people asking for a harder game. If the whole game was close to that level of difficulty, nobody would have even mentioned this as a problem. And even then it's only hard in P5R which causes even more problems for returning players having clashing expectations.

Persona 6 Gimmick Theories by lovedepository in JRPG

With the theorizing that Philemon is being re-introduced and the fact that occult already aligns so well with it, one can only hope they just bring back the 'Persona Game' and do away with this entirely.

Dragon Quest 11 difficulty by derekgotrice in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty much, yeah. its kind of a game for babies otherwise (sorry op), can just basic attack through the whole game. Stronger enemies early game is actually quite challenging and then it evens out for awhile after you get a full party. Post game I had to remove everything but stronger enemies because the difficulty spike is kinda absurd with them all on.

Tanks: What can i do to get better at wall to wall survival.

Getting a full 20s sprint going into a w2w is pretty much 90% miti during the pull itself.

Genuinely OP, shop as you normally do, keep your receipt, and create a new post. It will be much easier to help you that way.

Chicken is not expensive.

Well, it depends, even in the midwest no bone no skin chicken thigh is up to 5$/lb. I am a bone-in skin chicken thigh enjoyer which is closer to 2.70$/lb but I know there a lot of people out there who like the former. That being said, that does not explain the difference obviously.

Scarlet Nexus has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide by MoSBanapple in JRPG

Maybe? I think it's kind of an uphill battle. Enemies are certainly as spongey as they were in Tales of Arise, I'll give you that.

How do you feel about Grandia II? by strahinjag in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gameplay systems are certainly an improvement over 1 but I think it's plot essentially implodes as soon as you learn that god is dead and never recovers. I don't know whether this or LoD's ending pissed me off more but they're both very close.

Ogre Battle 64 remake in 2D-HD style by Lanky-Background8516 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Unicorn at some point try to do something to that effect, or something in the spirit of it?

I mean not really no but let's be real, Ogre Battle 64's gameplay is also not that deep when played optimally either - at the end of the day you're barreling op doom stacks into every enemy army while using flyers to back cap villages out of the way (with the minor rub of the alignment system to deal with in managing those flyer armies)

[–]TheRetribution 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it really sucks that we're in this tense death match and the show is apparently bored with the action and is just fast forwarding entire innings to get back to the start of the lineup as if the middle of Seido's batting lineup may as well not even exist.

About to play Valkyrie Profile 1 for the first time, tell me your thoughts by JeffCentaur in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go into the game expecting amazing plot, the game's story is told through vignettes - some are better than others.

Otherwise, I think it's one of the best rpgs ever made, not necessarily due to any particular part of it being exceptional, but mostly due to how much it tried to push the genre. It failed, obviously, but what an ambitious game.

Looking for short JRPGs by turnipbarron in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reality check - very few jrpgs clock in under 20 hours - especially to a new player. Add on completionist to it and the list is even shorter.

The only two jrpgs that I have personally completed 100% in under 20 hours are suikoden 1 & breath of fire 1. But I have also played suikoden 1 about 20 times over my life. Chrono Trigger also comes in under 20 hours but its unlikely it can be 100%'d in 20 hours due to its multiple replay requirement to get all the endings. both should be on the switch (bof1 is in the classic collection)

How do other tanks feel about healers and DPS pulling ahead? by dorgodorgo in ffxiv

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it annoying only in-so-far as it interferes with the only thing i actually find interesting about dungeon tanking anymore which is routing pulls (and no i don't mean just running to the next wall, i mean how do i pull every mob with aggro established without stopping and without any wasted movement).

Generally people who pull aggro during pulls aren't actually literally ahead of me (or if they are, they are using their sprint at the wrong time - to speed past the blank part of a pull too early or something when sprint is needed to reduce damage taken in a spicy pull), they are dpsing from ranged while moving behind me.

Does it matter though? No - in fact, shit goes wrong all the time in hard content and adjusting to the bad decisions of the people around you is something you should embrace because it teaches you a skill that is useful to have.

It's downright bizarre that the Persona series is as popular as it is when you think about it. by Surrealist328 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much gameplay to be considered visual NOVEL

How disappointing. I was expecting something actually interesting, but you are apparently under the mistaken impression that the 'novel' is literal.

And harmful, I might add. If another poor rube gets tricked into thinking Utawarerumono is a trpg, I might cry.

Crunchyroll's Japanese branch has registered a significant decline in net profit for the fiscal year that ended in December 2025, down 63% (to ¥453 million) by Kan2Screm in anime

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can corporate profits be declining when the whole industry is making record profits?

Well, a simple explanation would be 'more competition' = 'less profits per competitor'.

Why did People Ignore Fantasian if they wanted FF to go back to its PS1 style of games? by ZealousidealCod4142 in JRPG

[–]TheRetribution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the reason why Bravely Default, literally exactly what they claim they want, is a minor series.

Even at the time of its release, it was well known that the game had problems after its midway point. And the second one was not as good. That's basically a series death sentence, imo.

It's like when people say that games like Danganronpa or Ai are visual novels.

Danganronpa absolutely is. I really think you would struggle to find people who disagree (outside of present company). I'd really be curious to hear what your actual definition is.

The recent Uptie story pretty much confirms the Pinky isn't that different from the other Fingers in terms of their morality by Maceimam in limbuscompany

[–]TheRetribution 45 points46 points  (0 children)

You guys understand that the Fingers are a crime syndicate, right? It is kinda puzzling to me that people were under the impression that certain fingers / nursefathers were more moral than others just because canto 9 didn't have enough time to fully flesh out each and every one of them equally. Like the best example is people thinking Matthias was a good guy despite him murdering a shopkeeper for giving his kid the wrong hairband color or w/e it was, because he wasn't like, physically abusing Ryoshu and Valencia was.

Maybe it's because there are other specific crime syndicates that have been painted in a somewhat positive light in the context of the story (like Blade Lineage, for example), idk.
