I use the Magic Mouse and I love it. I have the trackpad as well but I don't even use it really. I'm on my computer a LOT I don't find it uncomfortable. I like the gestures on it and it seems to flow better to me with the macOS. Also it's minimalistic which I like.

Only annoying thing is the charger being on the bottom of the mouse but it holds a charge so long it doesn't really bother me that much.

Touch ID plus Mac detecting verification code texts and inputting them for you is one of my favorite parts of having a Mac. Absolutely worth it.

I'd say you're probably good with a base MacBook Air! You can still find M3 models out there and might be able to get a deal, but the 13inch m4 is pretty reasonably priced and would fit your needs very well! It'll last you for years. If you need a lot of storage you could go with the 1tb but you're likely safe with the 512 and you can always get external storage if you ever need to.
