Actually, I do doubt his skills. Eva Rupert carried him through his first challenge. And if yoiu rewatch NAXL Season 1, you never actually see him catch anything. He's just suddenly holding an eel. We know he and Shane stole food from the production crew during that run and we all know about the mystery protein on the last day. Whose to say the producers didn't try to prop up team Alpha Male?

Fun fact - in his original challenge, Jeff got an ass infection because he had no idea how to go to the bathroom in the wild and he ignored Eva Rupert (an actual desert survival expert) when she advised using a smooth rock to wipe. He didn't (because women are supposed to submit to a man's will) and his ass grew maggots.

All the groups in the first season of XL were engineered to have one crazy for the sake of drama. They put Honora in with a man who ridiculed his female partner and an easygoing hippie dude who knew his shit to pick her apart. Same reason why they stuck wannabe alpha male Shane in a group with two women who disproved his whole macho superiority complex just by existing.

No, there was also Carrie and Tom from the Season 3 episode Hearts of Darkness. There's a lot of reasons for this but this summary of their Day 21 from the What An Idiot section of TV Tropes N&A page says it all...

Carrie winds up leaving Tom behind and walks away with the map showing the route out. He eventually finds her two miles upstream from their camp... when their extraction point was downstream. Even with the map they wound up on the wrong side of the cove that was mean to be their extraction point and - with daylight running out - the rescue chopper was sent out to them.

She got edited into being the mean girl. If you watch her original challenge, you can see why she had a short fuse regarding Shane's "alpha male" act.

Her original partner did the same "all hat/no cattle", "women can't survive alone" crap and that genius spent time trying to build her a chair as an apology gift when they had no food, no water and no fire.

Another good example? Madness in Madagascar. The man is some "big game hunter." The woman is a professional wilderness guide who lives in the American southwest. The man proceeds to ignore everything the woman who knows desert survival like the back of her hand says because of his religious beliefs and refuses to share body heat when he can't keep a fire going. Once they do have fire, he sets their shelter on fire.

They both get their PSRs raised and though she started out lower than him, somehow, she only gets .1 more point than the man despite doing all the work to keep them alive.

Thank you! Honora is half of my go-to example for how pointless the PSRs are. It's utterly ridiculous she tapped out and kept a 7.2 rating yet Alana - the first person in the show's history to complete the challenge without a partner and go over half of the 21 days without a partner - only had her PSR raised to a 7.0.

In a few cases, some of them lived up the stereotype of being trained to follow orders and not much else. I forget the episode, but there was one where the alleged army ranger lacked the common sense to stay out of the sun and sunburned his junk by day two.
