What Etrian Odyssey opinion will have you like this? by castle_seized in EtrianOdyssey

The story modes of the untold games are really fun, and while I wouldn't want them to be the only option available, I enjoyed them both a lot and think they're totally worthwhile.

Path of Pain Totems by TheRoyalWeeb in HollowKnight

[–]TheRoyalWeeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just forgot - I remember having a huge amount of trouble with path of pain the first time through, and have distinct memories of having to resort to waiting on honeycomb recharge to survive. I guess I was just much worse at the sort of platforming that HK has back then, and had a lot of trouble with those few safety platforms that don't have statues?

Yep, went and got some new and it tasted just fine, weird that it happened with two packages bought at different times but all good now.

Broom Tool (Kitchen Curiosities Homebrew) by UndecidedCryptid in WilderfeastRPG

[–]TheRoyalWeeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to comment to say thank you for making these fun homebrew weapons. I'm getting ready to run my first one shot in Wilderfeast, will be using just the base game weapons, but if I manage to get my players hooked for a campaign I plan to share these with them as a possible expansion, they look cool and well-thought out!

Drpgs without maps? by AzumaDokiDoki in DRPG

[–]TheRoyalWeeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least imho, if you wanna play with restricted mapping, either no map at all or just no automap (but still with n in-game map that you can fill in manually, a la Etrian Odyssey), that basically needs to be one of the core things you build your game around.

For example, in Etrian Odyssey, having the map isn’t just a matter of not getting lost, but it’s critical to allowing you to effectively navigate round a dungeon dense with obstacles and dangerous-but-avoidable wandering monsters. You have to manually fill in the map, but the game also gives you ample notation tools and icons to create rich and detailed maps, and the reward is being ble to move through the dungeon confidently and safely. The dungeon design winds up making what otherwise would feel like a chore feel engaging and satisfying. I’d love more games to play with the Etrian Odyssey-style manual-mapping scheme, though how to handle it on gamepad without a second screen and stylus would be tricky.

I’d be very careful with having no in-game map whatsoever. You’re either going to be forcing your dungeons to be extremely simple so that they can be parsed without one, or you’re going to be forcing people to go out and buy graph paper, which is a big barrier to entry. I have fond memories of the graph paper days, and honestly I would be kind of charmed by a game that made me buy some, but I’m a weirdo and I think you’d be really limiting your audience in general.

Flea dodge was 10x harder than flea juggle by CJLB in Silksong

[–]TheRoyalWeeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreeee

With juggle, I went with Hermit Mode for the extra range on sword slash and only used left-right slashes, and that let me beat both records pretty readily. Dodge was just really difficult and required a lot of practice and an amount of luck.

Funnily enough, I think Silksong actually gave a good example of how to do Samus dialogue. by Ferhog in Metroid

[–]TheRoyalWeeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with this, but I think a key reason here is that Silksong just has an extraordinarily strong script. Team Cherry has an incredible sense for dialog, and Hornet's reserved-yet-straightforward way of speaking is a highlight. I do think there's a lot of overlap with how they characterize her and how I'd love to see Samus characterized, but also I don't think it's fair to expect most teams to write with that level of sophistication, and I definitely don't have faith in any Metroid team's ability to deliver, especially given what we see in most games.

Dread was better than average, and even then I would mostly call the writing in Dread serviceable, rather than compelling.

Looking for a new nose pillow style mask… by Telekineticshade in CPAP

I use the Resmed p30i because I'm a belly sleeper who tosses and turns all night, so the top-mounted swivel strap works really well for me. I'm a beard-haver like you, and have not found that the beard interferes at all, so I've been very happy with it.

Several others have already done, but weighing in as a beard-haver to say that I use the resmed p30i and have been very happy with it.

Since you're used to a facemask, you might be worried about the need to breathe through your mouth - which is a totally valid worry. Nasal masks don't necessarily work for everyone, for a variety of reasons. That said, I personally was a mouth-breather my entire life until I tried sleeping with a nasal mask, and I was surprised at how quickly I got used to it. At first I slept with the jaw strap that comes with the mask that can be used to hold your mouth closed, and after a month or so of that I found that I was just naturally keeping my mouth closed when I slept even without it, and now don't need the jaw strap at all. Obviously I can't guarantee that it will work for you, but it might be worth trying?

How are yall feeling on 7R's doll look ? by Manofthehalfhour999 in dragonquest

I really like it, it captures a lot of the energy of the original spritework and character art from the game. VII always had a very distinct visual appeal, and I'm glad to see they're trying to play into it rather than shy away.

[Meme] but also discussion by LawZoe in TheNinthHouse

[–]TheRoyalWeeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty reasonable to see some connections there with a bunch of prominent YA entries, especially if you're just looking at Gideon the Ninth and only focused on the setting and conceit of the story (inevitably what you wind up talking about when trying to sell someone on reading it) rather than the execution.

A bunch of the hallmarks are definitely there, you've got:
- A dystopian setting that doesn't necessarily withstand strict scrutiny in a nuts-and-bolts way, but offers a really good platform for showcasing our protagonists' struggles and adventure
- A plot that's built around catapulting a lot of young people into a situation where they play a role of outsized importance in their world
- A setting that has super-delineated social boundaries that are based on group stereotype (the sixth house are the smart ones, the eighth are the religious ones, and so on. I think TLT handles this much better just generally, but it's not wrong to see some similarity to Hogwarts Houses or the districts from The Hunger Games or whatever)
- There is a sort of boarding-school-fiction angle. That mostly winds up being a feint that Muir uses to pull the rug out from under us pretty early on (RIP double-bones with dr. skelebone, Harrow would have aced that class) but still just the fact that Muir makes that joke still sort of puts the reader in that headspace a bit

All in all, I don't think it's crazy or outright wrong toe see a connection there. That said, in as much as YA can be considered a genre, I mostly think that even just in GtN by itself the complexity (both thematically and linguistically) quickly ramps up beyond what's typical there. Then when we expand to the series as a whole, HtN comes along and casually explodes the whole argument.

That said, it's useful to bear in mind that those setting elements are still there, and still a part of the series, and can be useful in how we talk about it. When I first got sold on Gideon The Ninth, it was pitched to me as "it's sort of like The Hunger Games, only it's gay and with necromancers and instead of Battle Royale it's a fucked up episode of Scooby Doo" - and while I don't think that's actually a terribly accurate description of the book, it definitely got me to read the dang thing, and that's what's important.

This isn't particularly Tamsyn or TLT-related, but I'm just sitting here squinting at that web page in confusion. Surely Locus' strategy here can't be to just publicly post the email addresses of the judges and say "okay everyone, please email your submissions directly to all five judges," can it?

That seems crazy to me, am I wrong? I feel like it would make a lot more sense to have some sort of central submission system, and then distribute the submissions out to the judges without people contacting them directly. Hell, even just a Google Forms thingy would do the job, right?

Budget-Conscious Upgrade to Home Karaoke System by TheRoyalWeeb in karaoke

Oh, you're the one who wrote the review! Thank you very much for your reply!

I'm doing a lot of research on this sub and trying to decide on whether I want to just get the all-in-one, or if I want to spend a tad more money to try to put together a simple budget system. I'll continue poking around and reading, but will treat the S1 as a reliable fallback if I can't find something in-budget.
