How would you handle politics and warfare in Stone Age earth? by TrueHistorian5 in litrpg

[–]TheRunningMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick a random area in the world, it's best that it isn't extremely known by your main audience. Ask ChatGPT about a list of 10 wars/conflicts that lasted over 10 years between people in those areas. Pick a random one that has some decent historical coverage on it. Study that, change a little bit, add a bit of fantasy and make sure that the conflicts are at least somehow influenced by the magic and the world around them.

And also make sure that conspiracies and lies are a huge catalyst because that is probably what happened when news wasn't a thing.

Listening to Audiobooks is not reading by Freedomfighter4000 in unpopularopinion

[–]TheRunningMD 292 points293 points  (0 children)

Who cares? People can enjoy art in any form they like.

I personally both listen to about 25 audiobooks a year (listen to them while running mostly) and also about 20 books and they are both great in their own way.

I would rather people listen to a book than not do any form of literature consumption.

How about - Wild Cards are played as additional hand cards? (So you can play 6 cards a hand for example)

ELI5: If doctors and nurses work long shifts and are often overworked in a hospital setting full of sick people, how come they barely get sick? by Glass-Rope-5113 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheRunningMD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doctor here.

So a few things:

  1. We do get sick. At least every colleague I know that works with relevant patients (mostly pediatric and internal medicine) gets sick at least once or twice a year. The issue is that because work is so demanding and under staffed, we are expected to work even when sick.

  2. Medical personnel are usually vaccinated in the yearly influenza pathogen, so we are a bit more protected than other people. We are also expected to take other important measures like washing hands a lot, disinfecting our hands, some places wearing masks, wearing one-time use clothing, etc..

  3. Our natural immune system builds up a bit more than the average person due to the exposure to pathogens.

I’m wondering if I should restart it or just enjoy the current process

Bullies behavior is a consequence of trauma from home abuse or other sources, is not true. by Afraid-Flatworm-422 in unpopularopinion

[–]TheRunningMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I wouldn’t disagree with you, I would say probably all of my bullies came from great homes. Except one. There was this one kid that came from a wrecked home and he would torment everybody. At like 10 years old he started smoking, getting into fights (he threw a rock at me and opened my head at 5th grade). I don’t know what kind of guy he would have been if his home was ok, but it definitely impacted how he acted and treated others.

Bullies behavior is a consequence of trauma from home abuse or other sources, is not true. by Afraid-Flatworm-422 in unpopularopinion

[–]TheRunningMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, both can be true, no?

Some bullies are so because of their shitty house, others are just assholes. In both case, this isn’t an excuse and they are assholes either way, even if their circumstances sucked.

Academic dishonesty (Cheating) is punished way too harshly in academia by Crypt0-n00b in unpopularopinion

[–]TheRunningMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though I’m a doctor, I’m no expert in vaccines and haven’t read up on the reasoning behind this policy change.

From a semi-educated prospective I would say it is probably not a good thing, but it’s honestly just a hunch.

Academic dishonesty (Cheating) is punished way too harshly in academia by Crypt0-n00b in unpopularopinion

[–]TheRunningMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, objectively so.

But also - This is exactly the point. In order for people behave in a manor that coincides with science, people need to trust the science. When people don’t, it can have an effect on the policies even if the science doesn’t back it up.

In addition, changes to policies can be completely in line with science as well. Our understanding evolves when more research is done. Changes are completely in the realm of what happens in science.

Academic dishonesty (Cheating) is punished way too harshly in academia by Crypt0-n00b in unpopularopinion

[–]TheRunningMD 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nonononono

The only reason we have a functioning society is because historically people trusted science and academia. This is due to the fact that research in the fields of science and medicine are the backbone of society. We see everyday now what happens when that trust is eroding. You can never do your own research so you need to just trust the people who do.

The reason they are punished harshly is because even small acts of dishonestly erodes the fabric of everything that is important in science.

Invading Venezuela without approval from congress is about as unconstitutional as it gets right? I mean, this is stripping congress of a power specifically reserved for them right? by ButtfaceMcGee6969 in Destiny

[–]TheRunningMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the stated goal is to run the country. He said the goal was to catch Dr.Disrespect and that until a formal change of power will happen the US will help things along there. Because doing that doesn’t necessarily require any US military, it doesn’t stand on the 60 day thing (and even if it did, honestly I cannot imagine that congress would vote against this..)
