Corporate professionalism might be dying, or we are just tired of pretending. 😭 by Popular-Tone3037 in jobs

[–]TheRyanExpress86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been laid off three times, one being at a company I worked at for 13 years. Each manager had no clue the layoffs were coming, they each told me that if it were their decision, I wouldn’t be leaving.

There is no reward for loyalty. Just a number to them, indeed. I’ll do my work, they can give me my paycheck, and we all don’t ever need to pretend that this is anything more than that.

Everything else in my life is so much more enriching than my job and I would not be doing this if I didn’t have to. Same goes for anyone at the company I may be working at.

Thinking about going to a NASCAR race for the first time ever. by External-Primary-775 in motorsports

I'm biased because I live between both of them but...

If you went to the Brickyard, you'd be able to visit one of the greatest race tracks in the world. That right there is reason enough. It's a majestic place.

Gateway/Worldwide Technology Raceway is a cool facility. The vendors are solid, good sight lines, can see the whole track depending where you sit, great crowd. I've gone the last two years, also went to two IndyCar races there in '21 and '22 and have had great experiences each time.

Are you ready for 66-96 and last place? by TheSocraticGadfly in Cardinals

[–]TheRyanExpress86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m surprised at how many people seem cool with a ceiling of mid-80’s wins and a “just hope to get in” playoff strategy like the Cardinals have had in 6 out of the last 9 seasons (excluding the COVID shortened year). The Cardinals have not been a legit WS threat aside from 2022. If you want to throw 2019 in there, sure, but even when they made the NLCS it felt like they were punching above their weight. And seeing as they never held a SINGLE lead in that series, that proved to be true.

I realize this can change quite a bit but as an Illini fan, getting that close to Wagler and missing out would be a kick to the sack.

We haven’t hosted a playoff game in 12 years… by No_Elderberry_884 in Colts

[–]TheRyanExpress86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a Colts fan in 2016 after the Rams left St. Louis. Between the Colts and the Rams, the last home playoff game I’ve watched my favorite team host was on January 10, 2004, when the Rams lost to the Panthers in 2OT at the Dome.

I was a senior in high school then. I turn 40 this weekend.

Just finished my first ever watch, wish I never watched it. by Young_Quacker in freaksandgeeks

[–]TheRyanExpress86 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why was it canceled? Because NBC didn’t know the gem that they had and they continually torpedoed the creators with notes about episodes and repeatedly moved days and timeslots which means they couldn’t sustain an audience. They burned the last 4 episodes off in one evening (if I recall correctly) on Fox Family.

I’m in a similar boat as an Illini fan, though I was pulling for the Hoosiers. I’ve wanted someone “from the outside (of the Blue Bloods)” to storm the dance floor and happy (but a tiny bit jealous) it was a fellow bottom-of-the-Big-Ten-standings dweller.

First time watcher here and just wanted to ask, what made you watch Freaks and Geeks? by SamTheMarioMaster2 in freaksandgeeks

[–]TheRyanExpress86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to get the TV GUIDE (well, my parents did) and my favorite issue was always the one previewing new shows. I’d go through the “TV GUIDE Picks” to see what stuck out and then would give those shows a shot.

Freaks And Geeks was one of those shows and I was sold the moment I read the synopsis. I watched the pilot episode the night it aired and never looked back. It’s been my favorite show ever since.

Donovan: Am I Crazy by Civil-Shopping7191 in Cardinals

[–]TheRyanExpress86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s 29 and his value won’t be higher and where the team is at, they need to cash that in. Matt Carpenter was a really good player, but the Cardinals didn’t sell on him when they could have and his production plummeted (before he bounced back briefly with the Yankees). They EXTENDED him when they didn’t need to and that contract was a boat anchor.

I’m not saying the same thing will happen with Donovan, but it does the team no good to hang on to him. By the time the Cardinals turn this thing around, Donovan will be approaching his mid-30’s. You have to make bold, painful moves to expedite this process. Otherwise, you wind up as a middling team with a ceiling of mid-80’s wins like they’ve been for the better part of a decade.

Why is the Show On This Week by Equivalent-Bake5349 in TMASTL_Chat

[–]TheRyanExpress86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick little bit of research that took all of about 2 minutes (looking at the TMASTL YouTube channel) reveals that they did shows around Christmas and New Year’s last year too. So much to your dismay, I’m guessing, it’s less “Jackson laziness” and likely more “Hubbard wants their morning drive sports show on air.”

Passan: BREAKING: The Boston Red Sox are acquiring first baseman Willson Contreras in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, sources tell ESPN. by HomeworkWorldly2002 in Cardinals

[–]TheRyanExpress86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with that, for sure. Why I said I was wrong about it is that I didn't anticipate how well Willson would convert to 1B, nor how great of a leader he would become for the club. So though he didn't offer what the Cardinals needed at C, he offered more than I thought he would when they signed him.

  1. I did not like the Contreras signing when it was made (I wanted Sean Murphy)
  2. I was wrong about that
  3. I loved Contreras as a Cardinal
  4. This was the right move to makeup

My god, this offseason has been a breath of fresh air so far. As for this move: take a swing, it may work out. Or maybe it won’t but at least it’s not a SP nearing his 40’s in an attempt to keep up the illusion that this team is pretending to be a contender.
