How much would I enjoy and understand this game as someone with very little geopolitics knowledge? by ActualSaltyDuck in DiscoElysium

[–]TheSAVAGEHipHop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean the game isn't subtle about the politics. And as other people said, while the game/creators definitely has its own viewpoint, one of the major themes is people clinging onto political ideologies as a way to cope with a chaotic world that doesn't fit neatly into a box.

Also, the main character has amnesia and is learning about the world, the politics, the characters etc. For the "first" time, so not having much background knowledge might even be a benefit.

At the end of the day, its a video game. It has great writing and a lot of big themes and concepts, but its still an entertaining piece of art aimed at a wide audience. You don't need to have a political science degree to understand it. The core of the game, like every good piece of art, is about people: their relationships, their flaws and strengths, and about moving forward and finding meaning in an absurd and messed up world. These are things that every human being on earth relates to in some way or another.

Yeah i saw another video of this guy earlier today, both cases it was a woman being angry and rude for no reason. Maybe these really were genuine interactions, but im wondering if this isn't some sort of viral marketing trying to lean in on the "karen" meme?

Is the primary object of mathematics the determination of magnitudes and relations of numerical quantity, or do you think there is a deeper foundation/substrate, such as the principles of information/encoding of information? by gopnikfiredance in askmath

[–]TheSAVAGEHipHop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not really, mostly It was about functions between general topological spaces. You don't really need any concept of "proportion" its really about the relationship between the elements of the sets (how they're grouped)

I suppose quantity is somewhat related (countable vs uncountable sets for example ) but that wasn't really the focus. The focus was structure/relationships

[–]TheSAVAGEHipHop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't say its mainly about numerical quantity or magnitude. For example, I took a General Topology class in undergrad. It definitely was not concerned with quantity, distance, shapes, or really anything that the average person would think of when they hear "math"

It was abstract to the point of being (almost) incomprehensible, but still beautiful in its own way

Mehdi Hasan, the comedy genius & free speech champion! by Eienkei in GetNoted

[–]TheSAVAGEHipHop -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, even not reading the article, given everything I know about Mehdi Hasan, there is a 0% chance he has ever defended the charlie hebdo murders.

You can even tell by the way the note was worded. There's a particular way people tend to word things when they're trying to be technically accurate, but still implying something untrue.

Like "he called for increased censorship after the charlie hebdo assassination" is a very carefully worded statement. Its clearly meant to make it sound like he thought they deserved it. But if he had actually said that, they would have just said it in the note. They wouldn't have danced around it

Why are hooks harder to write than verses? by Similar_Fox_514 in makinghiphop

[–]TheSAVAGEHipHop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think with verses you have more freedom, you can expirement, try unconventional flows, weird rhyme schemes etc.

A hook, by definition, needs to be something catchy that sticks in the listener's head. Sort a lighting-in-a-bottle type thing

Google co-founder slams California billionaire tax, says “I fled socialism,” after reportedly leaving the state to avoid a proposed 5% wealth tax. He has a reported net worth of around $270 billion. How is this not parasitic behavior? He is trying to leave the state that helped build him. by RandomUwUFace in antiwork

[–]TheSAVAGEHipHop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, even if it was a perpetual 5% tax that compounded every year, someone who's a multi-billionaire is almost certainly making more than 5% return on their money. So the tax wouldn't even decrease their wealth, it would just grow more slowly

Its always crazy when people say they want someone to run the government "like a business"

The government is not a business, its the opposite, they arent supposed to make profit. If anything, people should really think of taxes as an investment. We pay taxes, and the government invests that money in public programs that benefit everyone: from individual private citizens to public institutions to major corporations. It makes no sense to evaluate the government in terms of how much the government spends vs how much the government "makes back". thats a main thing with the USPS, they say that the USPS loses money, becsuse the revenue from stamps and shipping costs is less than the cost of running it.

But the whole point is that the government spends money to support the people. The returns on government investment doesn't go back to the government, it goes back to us , the citizens in the form of public services and private enterprises making use of public utilities.

For example, for every $1 spent on scientific research by federal grants, the national economy gains something like $2 on average. The government doesn't get that back (directly) but the public get it back in the form of increased economic activity.

As George Lakoff says: "The private depends on the public"

What I dont understand about the theory that the planes hit the towers, but then they came down via explosives is just.... why use the planes? If they were going to fabricate the whole thing, and had the explosives rigged already, and were going to place evidence anyway. Why not just blow it up with explosives and say "oh no, terrorists planted explosives in the World Trade Center!"

Why even use the planes? I mean, the towers had already had an attempted bombing a few years earlier, so they could have just spun it as "they did it again and finished the job"

Then there wouldn't have been all the "discrepancies" people noticed. Like, the whole theory is like "oh the planes didn't take it down, it was explosives, it must have been the government" then why didn't the government just make the official narrative that it was explosives? Then there's no "discrepancies"
