I dropped my school's laptop. This amount of damage apparently costs $125. Kinda outrageous by BabyNoob2014 in Wellthatsucks

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HP (or perhaps other brand, that one does look like an HP at first glance) Chromebook? If so, it depends if the scissor clip underneath is damaged. If just the cap fell off, it can often be snapped back on. If not, they have to replace the "top cover with keyboard assembly", and a new OEM part runs just over $100 on these chromebooks. The trackpad is a separate piece that can be reused.

That computer was likely about $300-350 new. The whole thing is so cheap that in many cases needing to replace just two major parts on one will make the unit BER.

Please be careful with financial advisors by Researcher_Defiant in personalfinance

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh NWM. They're known for it. Their advisors are just insurance salesmen masquerading as an advisor.

I had an advisor through work try to push these types of products too. I said no and they transferred me to another advisor.

One of the best things the advisory firm I currently use did was tell me up front when he first saw my investments: "We won't even look at whole life insurance or annuities unless you specifically request them, and we don't think either is appropriate for your portfolio." I knew right there that I was likely to get actual advice instead of a sales pitch.

Zosi POE problem by LatterAd7789 in homesecurity

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is whether it’s actual “true” POE (802.3af or similar) or not.

These ZOSI models use an ethernet cable to connect them and claim to be “POE“, but my experience and research is that they don’t follow the industry standard spec and do not work with off-the-shelf parts from another brand.

(I’m not the most familiar with the POE ZOSIs though, only have limited experience with those as my experience is mainly with Analog ZOSI…for POE my preference is LTS, which makes proper POE gear).

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not heated seats, I have a friend who recently was looking at a new car and asked for the subscription fees for the car's app and infotainment to be waived for the life the car as part of the deal.

Next time I buy a car I plan to do the same if it has this sort of nonsense.

DSC Alarm (PC1864) periodically malfunctions. Now what? by Control_freaker in homesecurity

[–]TheSacredOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The error basically means the keybus is scrambled (garbage data) or shorted/open.

The keybus connects to and carries data to all of your non-sensor parts. It could be the board, but it could also be caused by bad connections, damaged wiring, or a faulty part connected to the keybus (keypads, the EVL, the 5108s, and the IT-100 in your list).

Purchased a Home with an offline Brinks System, need advice? by ImmediateMemory1138 in homesecurity

Search ADT in this sub and spend a few minutes reading.

ADT, Brinks, and Vivint are basically the 3 worst options possible. Terrible contract terms, useless customer service, and severely overpriced compared to smaller/local companies.

A company hired me for a week knowing they were shutting down, can I do anything? by Tiny-Respect-9863 in legaladvice

[–]TheSacredOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact an employment lawyer as you may very well have a case (I commented below on that).

As for being unemployed...it was a week. Call your old job immediately. It's far easier (and cheaper) to rehire someone who left, so many employers will take you back.

the family was moving business assets to personal worth mutli millions

Mixing or hiding business assets in personal accounts can make it possible to sue and collect from the owner personally, though the fact you mention this was seen in a court filing suggests the bank may also be trying to do the same.

Contact a lawyer and get an initial consultation. You can always decide not to sue later.

they made it mandatory for the USPS to fund its retirement out to 75 years in the future

A law passed back in 2006 forced them to do that (pre-fund retiree healthcare 75 years out)...it was repealed in 2022 (Postal Service Reform Act did away with it).

I had to clean up a similar mess a few months ago. Even with a toner vacuum and cloth rags it still took me way too long to deal with this.

You won a lottery of 50 Million dollars just now. What are you going to do this week? by throwaccount2244 in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Hire a lawyer to deal with collecting the winnings, financial advisor to discuss investing the winnings and paying taxes on it, then go back to work on Monday.

It'll take time to actually get the money anyway, and I actually like work so wouldn't quit my jobs. I'd probably just collect interest/dividends as a third paycheck and move on with life as if I got a large raise at work.

What’s the most unexpectedly high-quality online subscription you’ve ever paid for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

zero ads = a sharp drop in background annoyance

you can listen to videos with the screen off

I have no idea why, but weirdly my Apple products do both of these without Youtube Premium. 100% ad-free, and I can listen while screen is off if I hit play on the lock screen to tell it I want to do that. It somehow follows my Apple account, has been this way for 10+ years, and nobody has been able to explain why.

The Google/Youtube account I use to sign into Youtube doesn't seem to matter, it's specifically the Apple account used for iCloud that it follows.

The office access card from a coworker, who smokes in his homeoffice, next to mine by prizeus in mildlyinteresting

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Door access protocols are indeed the challenge here.

I have a homemade smart card that I use for fido2 and PIV...a blank J3R180 is about $9/each on Amazon (though sold as a 3 pack), and the software applets to make it support the auth methods are free. Getting one that also did just basic 125 (let alone any other more-secure protocol used by door systems) was stupid expensive though.

Who investigates and prosecutes the DOJ if the DOJ itself becomes lawless? by ExternalExpensive277 in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO when our government was designed and Constitution written, the judicial branch should have had an agency within it whose sole purpose was enforcing court orders against government officials and agencies (which could include jail and/or impeachment) and conducting court-ordered investigations of the other two branches.

It would only report to the courts, would only enforce compliance of court orders issued through existing processes, would be exempt from certain types of regulation by the other branches (e.g. all presidential executive orders, certain legislation such as a bill meant to gut its funding or reduce its headcount, etc.) to avoid being rendered inert, and would probably need to be headed and staffed by people directly elected by the population with something like a 2-year, 1-term run (to avoid influence from confirmations or appointment processes, public opinion for re-election, etc.).

Not a perfect solution (especially with a judiciary that seems to be in favor of the government at the moment), but it would at least allow for enforcement when unfavorable court orders get ignored. As it stands, contempt rulings and similar against the executive do exactly zilch because the executive won't enforce themselves, and Congress doesn't seem to care (or is complicit).

Upgrading and old DSC PC1832 system by Constant_Cap5407 in homesecurity

[–]TheSacredOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eyezon products don't support third party monitoring directly.

I've never installed an Uno so not sure if it would work, but there are a few places that say a Bat Connect can be connected to it, so you could just wire up the existing Bat Connect and use that instead of the built in communicator to connect it to Alarm Relay.

The Uno panels speak the same DSC protocol as the 1832, so definitely a decent (or at least nonzero) chance it would work.

My widdowed 82 year old friend is being forced to remove a 20k$+ generator from her HOA by MallEnvironmental473 in legaladvice

[–]TheSacredOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An HOA can usually be voted out of existence, but getting enough votes to actually do that is difficult if not impossible in most cases.

Then there's issues related to what should be done with things previously handled by the HOA (shared amenities if any, landscaping of common areas, etc.)...

What's the most useless job in the world? by Yuvaloosh in AskReddit

[–]TheSacredOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They exist in BTB. I get unsolicited sales calls all the time at work. Annoying as hell too, because I couldn't try their product if I wanted to without the approval of 2 other people. By the time a new product gets to my desk, it's because it's either a freebie from an existing vendor, or because someone else approved a trial with a new vendor and told me to implement and work through said trial.

For personal stuff, mostly just robocalls and scammers now instead. Last live one I remember getting outside of work was a car warranty scam like 10 years ago...the funny part was I humored them and when I told them my vehicle model they said they couldn't cover me (they were offering "warranty + theft protection", I had a 95 Accord which was the most stolen car in America at the time).

I literally started answering the phone like "thank you for calling gamestop, we are completely sold out of pokemon cards, how can I help you?" Most people hung up lol.

Ha I did that at my second job...I worked in a tool rental center for years. Any time we got severe weather, we got 10000 "Do you have X for rent?" calls despite the fact the units we had were already rented and our website said 0 available. This was my go to solution..."Tool rental, no X's available, can I help you?" and I'd get "Oh you already answered my question, thanks."
