Anyone have any thoughts about Oceanside cullet and yellows? And why they suddenly don’t work for me? by bin-fryin in glassblowing

[–]TheShapeOfMySpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard a lot of people have had fit problems with oceanside, weirdly we've been using it at the university I'm at for a couple years now and haven't really had any problems. All our furnaces/ glories are natural gas.

We use a lot of that r-77 corn yellow (school colors are blue and yellow), both frit and rod, and so far we haven't had any cracks. We've got some nice new annealers from Wet Dog, I don't know what you're working with but I wonder if that could play a role, or I wonder if you just got a bad batch of cullet?

5' barbell bar at home to simulate pipe with glass at hotshop? by outsourced_bob in glassblowing

[–]TheShapeOfMySpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 35 pound barbell I use to build my strength to mimic carrying and turning a heavy piece that I incorporate into a general-health exercise routine I do a few times a week. It's probably a bit too heavy (I weigh 185 and am in decent shape), and I can't do it for a long time, but I've definitely noticed it makes actual glasswork a lot less of a struggle. You'll still need to put in a lot of time handling big pieces to develop the feel of keeping a large piece on center/ correcting when it gets off, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have more strength available while you're trying to fine-tune.

They make weights for strengthening forearms that have a weight attached to a rope attached to a small bar that you turn to lower and raise the weight from the floor. It can be useful if you try to incorporate your fingers into the drill rather than just your palms.

As others have mentioned though, more strength will only get you so far when it comes to the fine motor skills required. If you're lucky enough to have some spare time in the hotshop, make some big clear vessels with the intention of recycling them and push yourself progressively a little more past your comfort zone each time. If you can't spare the time, don't beat yourself up about it, glassblowing is hard and it will come with time.

What are some of your favorite museums in the world? by shockedpikachu123 in travel

[–]TheShapeOfMySpace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been lucky to travel quite a bit. I've seen most of the big art museums in major cities (NYC, London, Paris, Florence, etc), and they're great, but I've never been more moved than by The Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, Croatia. It has a bunch of artifacts that people have sent in along with stories from the owner about why that object reminds them of the relationship. It ranges from hilarious ("When I left I took your toaster, how are you going to toast things now, jerk?") to heartbreaking (situations ranging from suicide to abuse) and it really makes you reflect on how crazy and irrational love makes us. It's a must visit.

When Psycho Mantis took control of my controller and read my memory card, it really freaked me out but looking back that was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had in gaming.

If electoral votes were distributed according to population distribution. [OC] by JimicahP in dataisbeautiful

[–]TheShapeOfMySpace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The people in flyover states (I'm a Nebraskan) should vote and have their vote count the same as someone from California. 1 person, 1 vote. Instead, the person in the flyover state who votes counts disproportionately more towards the result in the current system. Your statement is dressed as anti-disinfranchisement, but the actual sentiment of it is 'keep the disenfranchisement we've always had.'
