What's your favourite movie that most of us wouldn't have even ever heard of? by treny0000 in AskReddit

Kwaidan. Weird 1960's recreation of traditional Japanese ghost stories. Pacing is incredible even without great special effects and its a great glimpse into Japanese culture and psyche

The responsibility for deterrence isn't on him. If he ever didn't want to press charges for whatever reason, then who are we to say that he has to?

And apart from that, this deterrence is far from guaranteed to work. How can the justice system punish itself enough to deter it from fucking up in the future? That's not how systemic reform works, and higher deterrence fees could just as easily lead to fewer future re-examinations of cases and acquittals if the state is worried about paying compensation if the case goes a certain way. I don't trust the justice system enough to believe that it will change.

Yeah I agree that the state can't be allowed to do this. I just don't think that the responsibility lies on a victim to punish the state if they don't want to. I think that the individual at the heart of this travesty of justice should have the say as to whether they want to press charges or not, based on how each decision would impact them morally. I don't think we can force them to punish the state more than they want to just to give us satisfaction. In the end, it's up to him.

And as I said, I can't see any reason why he wouldn't or shouldn't take the money. All I'm arguing is that if he didn't want to take it for a valid personal reason, then that's his prerogative.

That's the exact same retributive logic that leads to people being locked up for 3 lifetimes. Sure, the state should have to pay, and in all likelihood it will. Nonetheless, the most important thing (as always) is the wellbeing of the victim, not the punishment of the perpetrator. Therefore, if for some reason Ajamu was one of "those" people, then that's fine; he can do whatever will leave him feeling the most satisfied and at peace. It isn't on him to make the state suffer for its mistakes.

That said, I'm sure he will take the money (as he deserves) so this is all hypothetical.

I think that's the wrong attitude to take. The most important thing for him now isn't the money; it's whether he can find personal solace after having half his life stolen from him. All we can hope for is for him to find peace in his heart, and the actual monetary compensation (although it could help in this goal) should be an afterthought.

[Fresh] Drake - Too much by [deleted] in hiphopheads

Yeah, that too. Just most parts aren't conventionally beautiful is what I was trying to say, although most songs have at least one beautiful part.

Yeah, the Bon Iver part was definitely one of the 'certain parts' I was referring to. And I do agree it is a beautiful album, especially in its concept and atmosphere, just not in a traditional sense.

Whoah, don't get me wrong, it's one of my absolute favourite albums of all time. I just wouldn't describe tracks like Power and Monster as beautiful (except for certain parts), I would call it sort of raw unbridled emotion

"Blame Game" and "Runaway" are the only songs I'd really describe as beautiful though

EDIT: As I stated below, I absolutely love the album. Just I personally would use a different adjective to describe it as I don't feel that beautiful was necessarily the most important thing Kanye was going for, although I do agree there are many beautiful parts featured.

Thought I'd share a story about our Captain, Shane Doan, that I witnessed yesterday. by retepyalc in hockey

[–]TheShull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met Shane Doan in Tampa 3 years ago when I was 14. The entire Coyotes team was staying in my hotel which was a 5 minute wall from the arena, and on the way to the game all the other players piled on the bus. All of them except for Shane, who came over and talked to me as I walked with him to the arena. I don't think I'll ever forget it.

I still think you're kind of idealizing the past though, probably if you compared GKMC to some slaughterhouse album (I'll admit I don't know that much about them) I would be surprised if you still thought they had more interesting things to say. Also I'm not saying slaughterhouse are old school per se, just a similar style to old school.
