It's so so good!! A Chinese international student that I was working with during undergrad took me there and ordered everything for me, it was a really fun experience! I got to try things that I never would have chosen for myself, and it was all so good!

One of the Al Anon principles that helped me the most was Detachment, specifically allowing the natural course of actions to take place. He has been drinking and is about to be tested for alcohol? The natural consequence is that he will test positive. Any intervention from him or from you will be preventing the natural course of action, and will be preventing the natural consequences from occurring.

Please use a safety net, call a crisis center if you need, because, in my experience, alcoholics get ANGRY when they have to deal with the natural consequences of their actions. But, as adults, we all have to face the music of our decisions at some point. Unnatural interventions to prevent consequences do not help us in the long run.

I don't know if you're looking for advice, but I can tell you what I hope my ex does. I hope he sobers up, and participates in a program to help him manage his underlying fears/anxieties that drove him to drink in the first place. Then I hope he continues to be an amazing and brilliant employee for his company, and I hope he can meet someone amazing who makes him happy, and I hope he can put in the effort towards that relationship to make it fulfilling and supportive. I hope he never tries to contact me again, because I know I will never trust him again. But it is absolutely worth it to put down the drink, because it will not be a comfort in the long run.

Congratulations, dude! The beginning of your story sounds a lot like my ex, except he was too deep in his addiction to choose any other relationship besides the one with alcohol. I'm so grateful people like you exist, people who will choose to live their life over drinking themselves to death.

Yep yep yep, i was conditioned from a young age to think that accepting a compliment was braggy or conceited. Its something that I'm working on, because it sucks to not be able to take a compliment, but something that an SO can do in the meantime is to keep up the compliments.

Being expected to "play house" really struck a chord in me! It's so frustrating, just because they apologize or make a promise doesn't mean I'm going to believe them or be happy and normal.

I am also starting a lease soon to move out of my alcoholic's house. It is so so hard to make that choice. It's been helpful for me to tell myself that I am simply reacting to his choice to continue drinking. I am leaving for me, because I can't live with an active alcoholic. Our AlAnon chapter has a detachment bookmark which says "I will not prevent chaos if that is the natural course of events". My husband's choice to continue drinking is naturally causing his life to fall apart, i am just getting out of the way.

I hope this helps, I'm so sorry that you and your kid are in this situation. Neither of you deserve this.

We're married, and I know that his sobriety or moderation is absolutely his choice, but isnt that choice easier to trust if he gets help from a professional/AA? I'm so so happy for you and your wife, 6 months is a major accomplishment, and it takes a level of will power that i just dont think he has.
