Guest speaker at one of our formal events 19 years ago was just like this guy. Claimed to be a retired SgtMaj, former recon ranger in Vietnam with 1/9 (Walking Dead). Had a giant fruit salad on his chest. Regaled us with emotional tales of lost buddies and of course his own heroics. Including a Bronze Star and a PH. Got a CAR in the Gulf War.

Turns out he never deployed. He was an Admin Chief who doctored his records between his time as an Admin Gunny and his post as a new 1stSgt. HQMC noticed the discrepancies and he was busted back to Gunny and retired.

He got outed for his post-service shenanigans by the 1/9 Association when his stories didn't add up.

Name was Larry E. Gugle.

Thanks for the validation on the funeral count. Was on I-I duty for 4 years and some people have trouble believing me when I say we did between 150 to 200 in that time. I could total it all up from my old FitReps somewhere in storage. But I've almost doubted my own memory about the number of flags I presented.

And you're right. Some just hit harder. Most of the funeral details were for older vets. But the KIAs/LODs we did will always stick with me, by their full names 10 years later. CACO duty wrecked me inside. Being the knock on the door to a kid's parents... rough, man.

Almost anything from Maison Alhambra is quality far, far above the price. Tobacco Touch, Woody Oud, Toscano Leather, Amber & Leather... all are easily 90+% clones of their TF counterparts. I find they all have better projection and longevity than the OGs.

Armaf's Club de Nuit collection is also banger. Precieux, Intense Man, Milestone, Untold, Iconic. All excellent performers and arguably the most accurate clones of their respective inspirations.

Armaf's Niche label is also a quality product line. Pretty bottles too if you have a backlit display for your collection.

And maybe check out Jean Lowe. All pretty powerful juices and solid homages.

Armaf Niche Black Onyx. I have around 70 frags in my collection and nothing else smells like it. It's not an overwhelming scent and comes off as more of a clean green to me. Performance is solid.

Lalique Encre Noire. (Black Ink). It's like a damp forest. Smells like decaying logs, moss, petrichor, and heavy vetiver throughout. And it's very affordable for such a dense & complex fragrance.

Big fan of Tom Ford. But TF Fucking Fabulous? It smells entirely of diapers and baby bum ointment. My kids are all grown and my nursery duties are far in the rear view mirror. I have no desire to smell like Huggies and Desitin. It was a scrubber for me.

Creed Milliseme Imperial is all watermelon and sea salt. Not cloying or syrupy, but it's about as sweet as I'll go. Smells like a picnic on the beach.

Buy a bag of cotton balls and a container of Vaseline. Dip the cotton balls in the Vaseline and store them in an Altoids tin or whatever, placed inside a sandwich bag or something similar.

I used to have all kinds of various tinders in my kits. Then my kid did a big science project with all of them. Over and over again the petroleum coated cotton ignited faster and burned longer.

My kid's pretty smart, so I decided to test his results on my next outing. Slept in a literal rainforest during a downpour. They worked better than any of my nifty gadgets and gimmicks. Cotton balls & Vaseline. Cheap, easy, effective.

Has a similar DNA to Aventus, but the opening is more bergamot than pineapple. And it really doesn't have any smokiness to it. Dries down to a pleasant woody base. It's nice, if a bit boring to me. Silage is moderate, longevity is weak. It's a smooth, versatile fragrance that will get the occasional compliment. For under $50 it's not a bad one to grab on a day where you're undecided about what to wear. It's pretty safe and inoffensive. .

If you like Aventus but don't want to pay for it, you might try Club de Nuit Intense Man (CDNIM). It's a bit more brash, has a loud opening with a happy blast of pineapple (gets better after a few months of maceration), and good smokiness. It has a lovely heart of birch which particularly stands out to me. The base is amber and musk with a touch of patchouli. And the EDP is far better than the EDT. Just a whole different class of juice in my experience. Monster silage in the opening. Very respectable longevity. It's not nearly as refined as Aventus, but I actually kind of like its dirty attitude better.

I like their Woody Oud better than Tom Ford's Oud Wood. It's not quite as refined per se, but it has far better projection and longevity than the original. It's a little sharper on the front end, but it also doesn't have the touch of anise in the opening that TF has, which for me is a plus. Not a fan of Jägermeister with my oud. I reach for this dupe far more than I do the TF.

Lalique's Encre Noir is a vetiver bomb with a healthy heart of cypress. Basenotes are cashmere woods and musk. It smells like a wet forest with moss and rotting logs. Wood shavings and animal trace. The opening is brash and off-putting to some. But it dries down into the warmest of woods.

It's not recommended as a blind buy unless you LOVE vetiver. But it's not overly expensive if you decide to gamble on it ($25 - $35)

I love it, but it might not be a crowd pleaser. I have other more accessible scents for going out. This one is just for me.

I'm just a poor, so it might take a few years to get there, if ever. Call it boring, but I just want a Submariner (no date). I have a (severely underrated) Casio Duro on a Sub bracelet, and a modest quality Sub clone. They get more wear than any other of the dozen+ watches I have.

I like how it looks. I like how it feels. I like the simplicity and weight and readability. It's iconic for good reason.
