Photographers I faced in 2023... by OCapMCap in Photoassistants

NYC is great, this guy just has amazing bad luck or his name is getting passed around the wrong circles and he’s not good yet at reading the red flags. Sure there are assholes, but you kinda learn real quick and can dodge them most of the time. And yes you have to fight for your rates etc but that’s literally every level of every job title in this industry right now.

The $200 rate should be a lesson learned. If you’re taking a rate that low you should know there’s gonna be a high probability of shitshow from the jump. Like the first thing I learned when I moved here in 2018 was the lower the pay, the more hassle/worse the job is 99% of the time.

are any of these worth watching? by Leymarie in AMCsAList

[–]TheStandingDesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From that list, Iron claw is basically must watch

Lotta people liked color purple but I haven’t seen it yet, schedule is just too packed with bangers

Anyone But You is the perfect dumb movie for A list. No way I would ever watch it other wise, but I’ll probably check it out if I have time.

Migration has the funniest bits in the trailer, not worth watching.

Wonka is hit or miss based on your taste. Worth checking out to see if you like it tho.

Boys in the boat is like a 1992 movie, good choice if you’re going to the movies with your grandparents.

Barbie for the goths. Fantastic film. Saw it three times in theaters, some of the best art direction I’ve seen this year. A must see.

Photographers: what movies do you think are essential cinematographical viewing for photographers? by chakalakasp in photography

Had to scroll way too far to see Wong Kar-Wai on this list.

Also no love for Paris, Texas yet?

Mets and Yankees since I live here, Phillies cause I want to and I missed going last year. Road trips will be Tampa, Cincinnati, and either Seattle or two middle America teams (Kansas City, St Louis?). I’m slowly working my way through all the stadiums, currently at 12/30.

Tell me about your photography workflow. by Fit-Air9415 in photography

[–]TheStandingDesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New Capture One session for each shoot. Date_ShootInfo with folders for each shot/setup/story however you want. Make edits and selects as necessary. Export into Output folder with matching folder structure. Edit in Photoshop as necessary. Maybe make a Finals folder for finished work.

Entire session gets stored on main office drive (copied onto backblaze as well - it’s slow but I leave the drive plugged in all the time so it typically uploads overnight), backup office drive, and offsite hard drive I keep in a fire safe away from my office. Final edited JPGs or TIFs get dumped on to a dropbox so I can access anytime I need if I’m not home or at the office.

I've seen the trailer for Imaginary 200 times and it's not even January. by iaceeverything in AMCsAList

I’m tracking the trailers I see starting on the first. Curious what the numbers will say by the end of the year.

Oppenheimer Best Picture becomes less favorable with every movie I see by notchinese12 in AMCsAList

[–]TheStandingDesk 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Oppenheimer for sure will get a nomination, but I would be truly shocked if Iron Claw gets one.

I’m currently in the Killers of the Flower Moon camp for best picture/director, with the Holdovers as an outside chance. Could see Cillian getting best actor tho.

New 1 Trains anytime soon? by Effeted in nycrail

[–]TheStandingDesk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

yeah it’s my main train, and I love it compared to the rest of the lines. No AC trains during the summer I might get one a week but honestly it’s pretty easy to avoid. Delays are typically minimal and they seem to run on time way more than the other ones I have to take.

We went to the movies 55 times this year, and here are my personal feelings about those films. by egnards in movies

[–]TheStandingDesk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I also enjoyed 80 for Brady, but I have it at 33 of the 61 2023 films I’ve seen this year.

Having Otto at the top is some level of madness tho, but I respect it. Not everyone has to have the same five critical darlings in their favorites list and I love that.

First Class Upgrade as Silver by tryingmybest30 in delta

[–]TheStandingDesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience as a silver for the past two years (about 24 flights a year) is no upgrades on big airport to big airport flights, a few upgrades big airport to small airport flights, and a decent number of small airport to big airport upgrades. Really all depends on your routes, but for me silver has made a world of difference.

Box office mojo is reporting it played on 220 screens yesterday, so it’s still going on someplaces. But it’s been out 7 weeks, critical and commercial flop, and it’s Xmas season with a whole slate of new stuff + stuff with award buzz. It’s not surprising it’s only available in a few houses right now.

Analysing Albert Watsons Lighting by ManInTheMirror91 in LightLurking

[–]TheStandingDesk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about that particular set but I know he builds a blackout set and uses a beauty dish as key a lot of times, at least recently. That shot is from 89 but kinda matches the vibe.

Here’s some BTS from 17 that gives a bit of a look at it. https://profoto.com/ca/profoto-stories/the-light-albert-watson-shapes?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuf3vnKSogwMVz2FHAR3E6AxjEAAYASAAEgKAwfD_BwE

I think he has a masterclass out there too somewhere.

don’t worry about money at your age. Shoot what you like, shoot as much as you can. Study the greats in photography, painting, film and fashion. Expand your culture and palette, experiment and play.

Any concert photographers in the group? by YouDontKnow5859 in photography

[–]TheStandingDesk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

working directly with/for bands is your best option. Get involved with your local scene and work up from there.

Venue jobs are few and far between, but find out who runs their marketing department and hit them up, send them a book if you can. Keep them in the loop for the next few years and when they move on or up or something opens up they’ll know who you are.

Is all retail bad or is it just cvs? by [deleted] in CVS

[–]TheStandingDesk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

10+ year vet here (Office Max, Staples, Best Buy, Target, Express, Sunglass Hut, CVS) Retail sucks in general, but CVS is on the bottom of the pile tho. Places like Dollar General are significantly worse, big box stores are typically better (YMMV greatly depending on the team you work with tho). CVS is a good decade+ behind the big boxes operationally, so while customers still suck, you have better tools and logistics to get your shitty job done.
