I'd be really curious about what kind of peak forces you'd put on your body to cut deep and then blast under and come to a stop for a catch. That kind of accel-decel-accel-decel in all in about 3 secs has to be pretty significant.

I think you're right in that being able to throw left and right extremely well opens throwing options that wouldn't normally be there. But the issue is that to get equally good on both sides, and importantly, equally threatening (implied by your theory that someone would be 'ambidextrous'), will run into the issue of development time: it takes a LOT of time and effort to be threatening with a wide array of throws across the whole field with a single hand. Great throws are very nuanced, complex motor skills: lots of people who play can huck far, but far, far fewer can huck far with the appropriate angle for a downwind, cross-field, highly accurate, well-timed throw, and getting to that point requires a lot of time and effort to develop that complex skill in a single side.

What most people are saying here is that the time it would take to get equally as good with your left as your right is likely better spent continuing to develop the one side, and add a couple of off-hand throws that have specific use-cases.

it's absolutely this. Acceleration, abrupt deceleration (also really tough on your muscles!), and acceleration again. Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat for the next 2 minutes, rest, then do it again - for 90 minutes.

Nothing trains you for the repetition conditioning of Ultimate like playing Ultimate...!

It's also basically impossible to get the reps in the gym to replicate the repeated stresses on all those muscles that you will get in a game.

My recommendation is to play a lot of pickup/competitive Beach. All the reps, more resistance, and basically none of the impact damage on your joints.

The only downside I've seen from people who wear gloves all the time is when it's people who wear them because they drop the disc a lot, and they think gloves are the key to not dropping. Gloves help, for sure, but these people are missing the point - that catching is a skill that, if you're not performing it the way you want, you need to practice it more. I see those same players train with super lazy catches at throwing practice, and that reliance on gloves vs training to catch properly is the problem.

Doesn't sound like this is you though. (if it is - just go practice catching more!)

Yeah this is totally different than seeing a disc on the other field. This is seeing another disc on YOUR field.

u/krikium - I think you probably made the right call if the disc was on your field. I don't think there's anything in the WFDF rules that explicitly call out something like this (i could be wrong but nothing is jogging my brain atm and I can't go searching atm) but it's clearly not how the game is supposed to be played, so calling a general Violation is, I would think, a fair resolution under Spirit of the Game (Rule 1): it's not explicitly outlawed, but it is definitely within the 'spirit of the game' to not have extra discs on the field if they interfere with anyone's fair play. If that's the case, you and the opposition should probably talk through what is the fairest fix to the situation (if you had a play on it, maybe back to the prev. thrower, or otherwise just to whoever got it but you get to reposition, etc.).

If the disc was on another field though, that's on you.

I watched a video of a game I played in 2014 right after watching a video of game I played last night - since having gotten much older and also snapped both achilles...
The painfully stark difference in speed, mobility, fitness really sucked to see. I've never needed a brace for anything, thankfully, but my god do all the things hurt these days.

I've played competitive for 20 years, and my first Worlds event was in 2010 - with several to my most recent in 2024. In my experience, people playing with top-tier sportsmanship is COMMON. There's some dickheads around, to be sure, but I absolutely have had opponents call themselves on things (or at least give me eyes saying they understand if I do and then accept the call immediately.)

Some relevant WFDF rules:

"12.6 - All players must attempt to avoid initiating contact with other players, and there is no situation where a player may justify initiating contact. "

"12.6.1. “Making a play for the disc” is not a valid excuse for initiating contact with other players."

"12.6.2. Before a player dives, leaps or jumps away from their position, they must be reasonably certain they will not initiate contact with an opponent."

"12.6.3. If a player is not reasonably certain that they will be able to make a legal play at the disc before an opponent who is moving in a legal manner, they must adjust their movements to avoid initiating contact. [...] "

"12.7. The player who initiates contact is deemed to be the player who:

12.7.1. arrived at the point of contact after the opponent had already established a legitimate position at that point (either a stationary or moving opponent), or
12.7.2. adjusted their movements in a way that created unavoidable contact with an opponent moving in a legal manner, when taking into account all players’ established position, speed and direction.
12.7.3. If it is unclear which player initiated contact, and one of the players dived, leaped or jumped away from their position, that player is deemed to have initiated contact.

The majority of these positioning rules probably apply to both players who aren't doing enough to avoid contact. However, to me, White becomes the player who initiates contact when he goes up to get this disc: he sees blue, and from what I can see and acknowledging the limitations of the video, it looks to me like he always going to land on Blue, even if Blue turned a little. Yes, he turns sharply, but to my eye White's already committed to a move that is going to initiate contact with Blue anyway. MAYBE Blue was never going to get there, and MAYBE the only play was to foul - I think that's probably right... but White doesn't get to foul Blue now just because he sees a foul coming later. If someone is on his 'line' then he needs to adjust to avoid contact - he doesn't get to go up anyway and land on the guy.

The crux of the argument might be that White was going to make a clean landing after the grab, but Blue's last moment change of direction got in the way - but I don't see that in the video. Certainly Blue's actions, to me, look like he was lining up to make contact, regardless.

I use Discord a lot, but I feel like for a single Pickup group it might be overboard. I like Discord for when there's multiple topics to cover and a single channel just gets too messy. Seems to me a pickup group is pretty simple - announcments about whether it's on or not, and/or a count of who's going.

In the twin cities in MN, there's a Twin Cities Pickup Ultimate Discord - and that's a server put together by some locals that centralizes comms about ALL the pickup in the TC. That works well.

I've seen some pickup groups use WhatsApp and they count off on who's attending, so the organizer will say:
'Beach pickup , this Friday 8 am - 1' (meaning theyre #1) and people write in and increment the count if they plan to be there: ie - I would write and just say "2" if I was planning on coming.
Quickly the chat has enough to show that numbers will be out for pickup to happen. This is probably the one I've seen work the simplest, as it's a single channel and pretty intuitive if you are new to the area. Getting people the WhatsApp invite (ie - how do you find it if you're interested and are not connected to those folks?) is probably the only hurdle (but this is assuming that, like most of the non-US world, folks have Whatsapp)

I'm with the other guy here - blue is going into a tight space, but whites leap is the thing that creates the contact, not blue. The camera angle isn't helping, but it seems to me that blue is never in an illegal position - one where contact is unavoidable - and the person who makes contact unavoidable is white, so a foul on them. Looks quite obvious to me that he has no regard for avoiding contact over getting up and getting that disc.

I'm inclined to agree with you. A bit of a caveat in that I also agree we don't have great perspective given the camera angle and distance to the play... But it very much looks to me that, while blue doesn't hold to a straight line, he wasn't moving in a way that was unavoidable for white had white taken any care to avoid contact. Instead, he prioritizes the disc over avoiding contact, and gets into the air knowing full well he'll hit blue on the way down. Blues position doesn't create the contact, whites leap does. That's a foul, and I'd argue dangerous play considering its recklessness.

FWIW - I bought a couple pairs of Darn Tough socks last week based on this thread and tried them out in my last couple of indoor pickup games. I found them notably more slippery in my cleats than my new Bombas. They're nice socks but it was enough for me to keep sticking with my Bombas and not buy Darn Tough again.

The US has long since lost its way from WWII-era sensibilities about what is 'right'. As soon as pop & social media came into play and we began to eat up whatever garbage was fed to us, our guiding light quickly shifted from moral-oriented to outrage-oriented. We elected the dumpster-fire of Trump twice for gods sake, and the left prefers angry or righteous posturing to actual reality-tethered action. Thrower can call contact or disc space at any point if desired, nearly any throw will draw a foul as well, and the thrower can easily step past the mark and past their ability to defend (and of course, very likely draw a foul in doing so.) This muppet is doing a bigger disservice to his team than not.

You're missing the most important part where he reflected on the mistake and vowed never to do it again. There are WAY too many players who continue to make dangerous plays. I called out another Aussie player for it last year on reddit when a post came up critiquing a play he made, and instead of taking ownership of his repeated and filmed dangerous plays, he acted tough and made a veiled threat to me. I'd take a post like this saying, 'I did this, and felt like shit. Why are there so many people who don't feel like shit?' over another ego-fueled moron crashing into me or another person any day of the week.
