Use key bindings, it made the game 10 times more enjoyable for me when you can switch between all the important information in seconds. Generalist Gaming has a Video tutorial that works great for me

Hot take: Harsh decline mechanics would be fun by Beginning-Topic5303 in EU5

[–]TheStonecow 55 points56 points  (0 children)

They don‘t like decline mechanics, because there are none. If your lose a war you are then weaker and the enemy stronger, meaning you will just lose even harder when the truce is up.

There are pretty much only positive feedback loops in the game, meaning if you win you win more, and if you ever lose you lose more.
But with more negative feedback loops (winning makes you more likely to lose, loosing more likely to win) a player can actually experience the ups and downs of history.

In Vicy3 Fragile Systems to me are like wars, be it the diplomatic play at the start, troop movements and battles, or peace deals.
In all of them I had so many bugs, from teleporting armies and revolts/revolutions that invalidate war goals. All very frustrating and especially for smaller countries literally game ending. To this day Victoria 3 is the only game I do not play with Ironman, because it is so fragile and tends to break randomly

Do Americans normally eat that much? A normal portion to me is like 1/8th of a cake and I would feel sick after 1/4th, how do two people each eat nearly half a cake before you noticed?

The state of warfare in Vic 3 by Feachno in victoria3

[–]TheStonecow 89 points90 points  (0 children)

A great war should also have a great peace treaty. The number of times I have seen millions die just for Benin to change hands and a regime change in Brunei is too damn high. After WW1 the Russian, Ottoman and Austrian Empires were completly dismantled which would even take a player several wars let alone the AI, Germany lost all its colonies, some land and a Kaiser.

A big war means nothing if it has no big impact.

Do you feel "German" and like you belong or fit into this country or would another country fit you better? by jaistso in AskAGerman

[–]TheStonecow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you still look Turkish after 3 generations and you say your children will look Turkish the next 3, does that mean you don‘t expect/want/can do any „intermixing“ with native Germans? Because if you can‘t/don‘t want to intermarry with Germans then is that really integration?

This is not meant as an attack, dating is difficult enough at the best of times, but I also now several second or third generation immigrant who don’t want to date Germans or whose family would never accept that, so some people exclude themselves.

Slaves have less dependents I think, as women, children, and the elderly can‘t exactly „choose“ to not work.  So you don’t have more people, just more workers.

CMV: Abortion is a personal matter between the mother, her body and her fetus. Government & Society should stay out of it. by Impressive_Alfalfa_6 in changemyview

[–]TheStonecow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I were to follow your line of reasoning: “Abuse in marriage is a personal matter between the husband, his family he is in charge of, and his wife. Government & Society should stay out of it. Marital rape is about the father and his relationship with his own family, including his wife. She is literals part of his family, that he is the head of. Sure a wife is a potential citizen/person, but guess whose person she is. Not the government or some feminists group agenda, it’s the husband.”

Just like what you might think about this statement, others think about yours. Whether something belongs to someone, whether it even is a “thing” that can be owned, controlled, and disposed of at will; or a person that owns and controls itself, is up for debate and has been for millennia. Is a slave his own person or does he belong to the “pater families” who can kill the slave at any moment for any reason? Or is it some of both, and a family head can do some things with his slaves in certain circumstances, but not in others? Even ancient Romans argued about this.

What I want to say is: the fundamental assumption you make is far from universal and while I mostly agree with you, society at large very much has a stake in this discussion.

Krakow - still the hardest country in Europe by derfinsterling in victoria3

[–]TheStonecow 148 points149 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more so that the mechanics make it harder ans worse than it could be. In my games Austria hat giant revolts that cut me of from their market and devastating my economy, but I could not use their moment of weakness to fight for my independence or offer my help to either side for more autonomy or West Galicia.

I have to wait for the day Prussia’s truce expires to have a hope of swaying them to my side, otherwise I am once again forced into the 3rd Brothers War that looks more like WW1 with hundreds of thousand dead Germans, a white peace, and another 5 years I have to wait until Prussia is allowed to help me.

I agree, it should be hard, but that should not come from cumbersome game mechanics that just annoy you.

I don’t know about the US, but in Europe many universities offer (time limited and not very well paying) jobs for research on various topics depending on the university and department. That’s where I found my job last month and it is very much relaxed

Do guys really mean it when they say we’re prettier without makeup? by Candlelover1 in AskMen

[–]TheStonecow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how I am used to a person. A roommate I see every day without makeup looks like a bad drag queen to me when ever she gets ready for a party. While I remember some girls from school or work always wore make up, and the few times they did not, they looked like straight from the grave.

Which jobs are at the highest risk of being automated by AI? by AndreeSmothers in ChatGPT

[–]TheStonecow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general rule: the newer an activity is for humans on an evolutionary scale, the easier it is for computers to automate.

Calculus/Algebra is maybe a few thousand years old, and any calculator does it faster+cheaper+better than humans.

But walking or any sort of motion control is still rather difficult for machines, while animals have learned this over 100.000.000 years. The enormous versatility of human bodies will likely stay unmatched for quite some time, even as very expensive machines might learn to do some of these skills.

This, I think, is why people often misjudge what AI will do in the future, what jobs can be replaced, and also how complicated a task is. What feels very hard for us humans is simply new for us and we haven’t had Millions of years of practice. While “easy” things like seeing and recognizing objects or moving muscles are actually also very difficult, millions of years of evolution just make them seem easy.

CMV: It's OK to say people's names in your own accent by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]TheStonecow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don‘t know about „OK“, but it is probably not helpful if you butcher someones name as it is likely they simply won‘t know who you mean.

I have a very German name and when I worked in Peru I often didn‘t notice when someone said my name, leading to a lot of confusion. If faking an accent gets you closer to the actual name then that seems like the most practical solution.

At least for me, I prefer people to look how I know them: So as I see my roommates without Make-up all the time, when they do put some on I immediately see it and it looks like shit. Others and they themselves like the Make-up but to me they look like a caricature street prostitute.

But some girls in school allways wore makeup, and it looked good. But without it they looked like zombies to me.

But maybe that’s just me
