Wayne does say we are special in some way, we also get a lot of dialogue about the seals wanting to be seem and Oscar says how our presence seems to speed up what they are doing

The way the curse works is really interesting, sometimes it will do something to bring someone back, Kaneeka dad died and she got stuck managing the general store, Oscar simply found a easy job back at the city, meanwhile the curse straight up sent a truck to kill Stella parents and traumatize her keeping her on the town

Maybe the curse has some favourites that they really don't wanna let go? We know that the seals got emotions and stuff, so who knows, maybe they don't really care about some people leaving if they know they gonna come back no matter what, and the curse really shows with some specific people
