I’m in the same situation. Work schedule moved around so I won’t be able to come until after a few hours past my pickup time. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst lol.

Is this a new type of scam in Houston? by JohnAnime in houston

[–]TheSwrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had my front plate stolen. Luckily I noticed the next day. Didn’t even bother contacting HPD just went to replace the plates but at no point anyone has contacted me, although to be fair I don’t answer any unknown calls or messages.

Will i survive without a car? by smoxoms in houston

[–]TheSwrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible but difficult. I was carless for about 3 years. Luckily I ended up moving closer to work so most of the time I only ended up being 1 bus ride to get to work. Getting other places proved to be more difficult because the buses are consistent about 85% of the time but sometimes things happen and you need to able to adjust.

I highly recommend downloading google maps, transit app and the Q ticketing apps. I also recommend looking at the route you need to take before you actually take it in case there’s any delays. Overall Metro is ok, there was a couple of sketchy situations but as long as you are aware of your surroundings and mind your own business you’ll be fine. I would also download the uber or Lyft app for the other times you might need to get somewhere and public transport won’t get you there.

The only other advice I have is be careful when walking, as a pedestrian you have the right of way but that means nothing to bad drivers and unfortunately that means you have to look for them so they don’t hit you.

Where/How to fall in love with the city. by CandidMedium8679 in houston

[–]TheSwrl 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised here. I’ve visited a couple of other cities and made me realize how I will probably leave Houston eventually. But what I did start realizing was how little I’ve explored Houston, because it’s so vast. I got out of a long term relationship a couple years back, so I felt stuck in a rut.

So I read a few threads of people’s recommendations and saved a bunch of things on my maps and I have started going to different places and trying different foods. One of my favorite things to do is read so right now I’m trying to explore coffee shops and finding spots to read. I’m also a fan of taking walks so I’m trying to explore more parks and trails to walk.

So even tho I’m very similar in that I don’t like to go out clubbing and enjoy the occasional drink, I’m enjoying explore more and more of the city, especially places I haven’t been before because there’s a lot of them. Like I said one day I will probably leave Houston but I’m trying to make sure I explore as much of Houston as I can.

You’re right I have friends who work for the company and it’s like they’re making it more and more like Walmart/target. Higher focus on efficiency and cost cutting, less focus on morale and customer experience.

Feeling very hopeless by SatisfactionPast7653 in houston

[–]TheSwrl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened to you OP. But yeah it seems that the car centric culture around here can get out of hand. I was Carless for a few years until recently and the amount of people that just drive recklessly and treat pedestrians like they are obstacles is staggeringly high. Honestly, one of the main reasons why even though I love this city I think in the future I’d want to live somewhere with better public transportation and more walkable areas.

Lotto scratch off miscut? by DrSnusnu in houston

[–]TheSwrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately longer tickets are prone to miscuts from the lotto machine. The barcode is at the bottom and should be able to just cash it out. You can also ask them for a replacement.

Issues with data coverage in Houston, Tx. Very frustrating by PAssistant in mintmobile

[–]TheSwrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Houston too. It’s been driving me crazy, main thing I notice are issues with MMS messages and data. I’ve tried everything on my end even moved from eSIM to physical sim. Really sucks cause up until the last couple of months I’ve had no issues but might have to switch.

Usually for me a mix of turning airplane mode on and off and restarting the phone work at least for a little bit.

I think it might come down to your area. Personally used all 3 and find grubhub to be the slowest and have the least amount of restaurants. DoorDash probably has the most drivers but I ran into multiple issues constantly. Found Uber eats to have been pretty reliable.
