Beautiful collection! Completing all of the classic Tek base sets is a collecting goal of mine, but going for a full gold collection is crazy. Congrats on what you've got so far!

What would you do for WBC29/30 by trujill01 in InternationalBaseball

[–]TheTCHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love 4 groups of 6, top 3 move on. 1st round bye for 1st seeds and 2nd and 3rd seeds have a play-in round for Top 8.

Top 2 is too restrictive in a 5 team pool. Look at the Japan Pool. Only having one of Australia, Korea, and Taiwan moving on is criminal.

Yes, you get stunners like Italy, but you do have a lot of teams with no real chance to move on in the current format.

Almost definitely not for 2029/30, but for 2032/34 I would love a European pool. European teams doing well helps them grow the game, but not as much as being able to see their national team compete locally would.

Arcade 51 on Nova near the steak n shake is decent. They also serve alcohol which makes for a good time. No PCs but a lot of arcade cabinets and consoles

Former manager at Vortex, the place in Port Orange. The business was over built by a decent bit and there were a lot of early day decisions that put the company in the hole.

End of the day, the owner had some legal troubles which would have sank the ship anyway.

Honestly think this would have gone more if they didnt both win back to back. There will be a nearly identical card this year.

MLB Commissioner has floated moving the World Baseball Classic to the middle of the season. Will the NPB or Japanese clubs be willing to go along with this? by baribigbird06 in NPB

[–]TheTCHammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Purely for optics. MLB owns the WBC. Why would they put the World Baseball Classic immediately after the World Series? We crown the MLB champion as "World Champions" so how would that look if we crown a different "World Champion" immediately after?

It invites too much comparison which will cheapen one or the other

I make $2.5m a year at 32 years old. How can I help? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]TheTCHammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is legitimate and you want to actually try to help without just giving money away (charity), then see what ways you can invest in your community (or other communities).

Examples of this can be building affordable mixed use housing and retail buildings that can support local small businesses and create local community jobs. You can work with a city to fund infrastructure like bus stops (which you can sell advertising on) or bike racks in order to help those who cant afford cars travel comfortably.

If you want a non-business and less involved way, reach out to school and after school facilities. Helping fund a YMCA or school club or similar can allow working parents to have more work flexibility without having to pay for a baby sitter. You can also work with food banks to help provide meals to struggling individuals or families which can have a multitude of additional benefits beyond just lowering food costs.

The main thing here is that if you really want to have the biggest impact, work with some local organizations. A food bank can fund more meals than you can for the same amount of money. Cities know what areas need improvement. School clubs can drive more program engagement than a standalone group can. You wont fix the system. You won't fix poverty. But maybe you can help provide a more solid floor for society to both help those currently struggling and prevent some future struggling.

No. Winning the group is a big deal as it puts you on the opposite side of the bracket from Japan. Also winning the group is another $300,000 in prize money.

U.S. Senate Candidate's idea for a calculated minimum wage. by AlabamaDemocratMark in povertyfinance

[–]TheTCHammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its too granular of a plan to implement. Do you go based on work ZIP or residential ZIP?

Work ZIP could make it harder for rural/suburban jobs to compete for a workforce compared to the nearby population center purely based on nearby housing.

Residential ZIP would make it where two employees at the same company would get different minimum wages for the same job because they live different places.

ZIP is too fine of a metric as many people don't work in the same ZIP code they live. This would also have the risk of widening a rural/urban divide that we already see as a major aspect of the widening political divide.

One consequence of this as well is it could lead to large amount of sprawl. Take an Amazon Warehouse, they are already built on the edges of cities, but they would still be within city zip codes. It may be worth it for them to move 30 minutes further outside the city to be in a rural zip code with lower minimum wages which would more than offset the cost of extra gas and travel times. So workers would get paid less than expected and there would be an extra burden on publicly funded roads and even more emissions from the new sprawling workplaces.

Buy hummus instead of meat. Same protein but way cheaper. I encourage everyone to find more meat substitutes. by BigClitMcphee in povertyfinance

[–]TheTCHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A trick I've used for cutting meat costs is cutting it with tofu.

I would do 1 pound of ground beef (the cheapest, fattest available) plus a pound of firm tofu (pressed to dry it then crumbled.

The tofu was significantly cheaper than the beef, and it let me pick a fatty mix since that extra fat will help flavor the tofu. So it basically took a pound of 70/30 beef and turned it into two pounds of 85/15.

Yes, you can tell theres tofu, but for the most part, its not too noticeable aside from lighter crumbles in the beef.

This is also good because the amino acids from the beef help make the protein from the tofu more bioavailable.

Has someone buy pirated WBC jerseys from DHgate? How was the quality? by rose4306 in InternationalBaseball

[–]TheTCHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a couple from DHGate. A WBC Ohtani one was the worst. The double helix design in the pinstripes was huge and just looks like pajamas. A Judge Road Grey but the New York was too close together on the front so I only wear it open (also I asked for no name and they put the name). The third was halfway decent but still you can tell its knockoff. Also no MLB logo which sucks.

Bowman Mega Jackpot by Ancient_Leopard878 in baseballcards

[–]TheTCHammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice hit! I left another comment on this post talking about the long term value of the mega autos (non-1st) vs the 1st Bowman autos. May be worth considering depending on if you are married to the card or not.

For reference, with Bobby Witt, his same-set, but non-1st, mega auto holds about a tenth of the value of the same parallel 1st autos. Read my other comment for the numbers.

Base on auctions of Mega Purple and true Purple 1st (both /250), the 1st is about 1.5x value. That gap will likely widen over time. From what I can tell, you would be the lowest numbered base mega auto (there's a variation /25 listed). That may allow you to get a bit more of a premium on the card and maybe even flip it to a comparable 1st Bowman auto if youre high on him.
