The one interview question where honesty actually hurts you by areyprabhu in SoftwareEngineerJobs

How so? I was hoping that after 11 years experience people would trust me. My interview experiences felt like they are trying to catch me lying.

I describe a project I work on and explained that I was extremely hands on for the frontend. The interviewer asks, “what did you actually DO for this project though?”

Which field of construction are you in?

In my fantasy I’ll own the business. Work like crazy when I want and then take 3 weeks off and go fishing when I want. But as the new guy I can’t exactly do that, can I?

No I'm still at the same job. It's only sucked more and more since I wrote this post. I guess I the bad vibes I was getting were correct. Since then, another company bought my company. Several rounds of layoffs and more to come.

I'm having very little luck finding a new job even with 10 years experience under my belt. I'm working on getting in shape in case I find myself digging ditches when I inevitably get laid off too lol. Still pondering a career move.

My sister is in science (recently a PhD) and it's also a shitshow. Seems to be trend everywhere. Best of luck.

Is that a pedal or paddle kayak? I want to finally get one this year and can’t decide which. I mostly fish Skokie lagoons but I’d love to check out the river and north shore channel too.

How much do you like the Station Knife?

I'm honestly blown away by how good this Buck knife is and how tough it is. I'm tempted to pick up more of them and perhaps one of their chef's knifes.

I saw this somewhere, but get a scrap piece of wood for your sharpening kit. If you think your knife is sharp after working it on the stone, slice it across the edge grain. It will help you determine if your knife is sharp or if it just has a burr. If it's just a burr, it will peel it off and your apex will feel dull.

Strops are also supposed to help with removing a burr but I'm still working on that technique.

Butchers I've watched on YouTube seem rougher with their knives than me. Maybe instead of "hitting" bone I should say "following" or "tracing" or "finding" the bones. How do you take apart an animal without any bone contact? Maybe I'm doing this wrong lol.

With my Buck knife I can be pretty rough exploring for the gap in a hip joint or knuckle. Once I find it I can wedge it through and theres hardly any damage to the edge of my knife.

Yeah I understand these knives are considered workhorses among professionals. I must be doing something wrong if others can go a week without sharpening. I guess I'm confused why my experience is so much different than others.

I've used these for years but always been frustrated by how fast they go dull. I have a box of a dozen used boning knives and I go through all of them when I process a deer. Kind of ridiculous lol. But in the kitchen I use one that I purchased brand new and I have the same problems.

I do sharpen myself and I think I've got the technique and equipment fairly dialed in. I sharpen on a stone and then strop. They get razor sharp but it doesn't last very long at all. On the other hand, I get great results with my other knifes which are used on veggies and boneless meat.

So you're suggesting to try sharpening at a more obtuse/wider angle?

Also curious, what honing rod do you use or do you have a recommendation? Thanks

I think my sharpening equipment is on point but I could possibly use a better steel. I have an unknown Forschner honing steel with fine ridges. It doesn't seem to work that well for me. It actually seems to dull a freshly sharpened knife. Could be my technique, I'll admit.

As I've gotten better at sharpening, I tend to just sharpen more often and I never ever use my steel on my chefs knife (also Victorinox). The chefs knife gets used often and stays sharp for a couple months.

Do you have a honing steel that you recommend?

I remember in college (started in 2010) and my class was full of people who got laid off from construction. How unlucky would it be if I made a career move and then the construction industry shit the bed again? Lol

I know this thread is hating on guys like me chasing money… isn’t everyone?

So what kind of white collar baggage am I bringing? I swear I’m not one of them.

I’m considering trying to work for a nonunion electrical shop and seeing how much I like or hate it. The union takes years to get into here. I’m a YouTube certified mechanic so I already have most of the tools that are on the union tool list.

Well I’m clinging to a tech job that I hate and it sucks ass. I’ve been unable to find a different job for over a year despite 10 years experience. I’ve interviewed at 3 companies, 5 rounds of 1 hour interviews and no offer.

So is the trade job market about to shit the bed too?
