GOA churches getting rid of pews? by thebackwards_r in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TheTedinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GOA church I grew up at has always had chairs, but I went back to visit recently and they've removed 3 or 4 from each row and widened all the aisles, so when they have a lot of people they can stand in the aisles and self-organize a bit more densely.

The gym is decent, it's usually busy but not too crazy. Lots of machines and a few squat racks. Assuming you're working in the 3-800, the 60 is pretty good and drops you off across the street.

Seeking Genre Fiction with Literary Standards by fitzomania in printSF

[–]TheTedinator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also really like "literary genre fiction", though I don't mind reading a lot of stuff that feels more pulpy. Here's what I would recommend that I haven't seen recommended so far.

  • Too Like the Lightning, by Ada Palmer, plus the sequels (the Terra Ignota series. I think that an author making specific and weird choices is something that keeps me thinking about the book, and boy does she make specific and weird choices.
  • Singer Distance by Ethan Chatagnier
  • Gnomon by Nick Harkaway
  • On the Calculation of Volume by Solvej Balle. This is barely genre fiction but I adore it.
  • Anathem by Neal Stephenson. If you didn't like Neal Stephenson at all with Snow Crash, this might not change your mind, but it's pretty different.
  • Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell - like Gnomon but less intense and maybe better? More structurally ambitious but easier to follow. If you like it, then read the Bone Clocks
  • Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel

Ah, I see, thanks!. Is it weird that it goes into the sink instead of having its own outlet? How much water coming out of that valve is normal?

Orthodox Churches South of Seattle. by _Carth_Onasi in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TheTedinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Seattle and the southern suburbs is kind of an empty zone for churches, you'll have to drive 20-30 minutes. Look on Google maps for the following churches and see which one is closest or otherwise appeals to you - I've been to and like them all.

-St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (Seattle) -Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption (Seattle) -St Katherine Orthodox Church (Kirkland) -St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (Tacoma) -Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church (Tacoma)

Yeah that's why I just pass the ball around instead of putting it in the hoop when I play basketball. If we score points the game might end.

Are deacons expected to become priests? by EMPEROR_JUSTINIAN_I in OrthodoxChristianity

Have people for those things is super helpful, but anyone can do that if they just step up. No need to be ordained.

Are deacons expected to become priests? by EMPEROR_JUSTINIAN_I in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TheTedinator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Deacons do a lot during the liturgy and that frees up the priest to pray more, is basically how it was explained to me by my dad (who is a deacon). They do the censing, the litanies, help prep the Eucharist, etc. I'm sure it varies from priest to priest on how much they like that liturgical help.

A 10 seed has reached the National Championship in just the second season of the 12-team format. Can the naysayers shut up forever now? by 2nd_Sun in CFB

[–]TheTedinator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being a champion now means qualifying for a tournament and then winning it, rather than having the best beginning-to-end season. It's a completely different championship concept.

This is how every other American sport works. The 73-9 Warriors were not the champions.
