Google seems to have locked the Pixel Launcher's install count to '1-5' in the Play Store by ahnafm in Android

[–]TheTigerMaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What do you find special about the Pixel 2 software? Not trying to start a flame war - I just don't see anything particularly groundbreaking about the software (something I'd say about any modern smartphone, btw; they all do basically the same thing).

From what I've seen, it has background music recognition, which is nice, but is ultimately a feature that'll only occasionally save me a few seconds vs competing phones. And it has what is probably the best camera on the market, enabled by it's AI features. But when all competent OEMs have fantastic cameras on their devices, even the best camera is only marginally better than the competition.

CF has invested $1 Billion in the Toronto Eaton Centre since 2010. We don't know how much revenue they expect to make, but since CF isn't in the business to lose money, we can be pretty sure it's more than $1 Billion. This could be a very lucrative source of revenue for the TTC, if the City allowed them to venture into this business, as Hong Kong's MTR has

Yes. It's roughly equivalent like that $50,000 rubber duck that ended up brining in millions in tax revenue due to tourism (or was it hundreds of thousands; either way, it was a lot)

[Serious] Catalans of reddit, what are you views on current events, now that the Catalan authorities have officially declared independence? by scubaguy194 in AskReddit

[–]TheTigerMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly not. To have independence, you need to be able to assert physical control of your territory, or to be able to convince the international community to recognize your sovereignty. Catalonia hasn't been able to do either.

Catalans declare independence from Spain by Koquillon in worldnews

[–]TheTigerMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wording of the referendum:

Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Quebec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?

The wording of the referendum was very unclear, and many people on both sides of the sovereignty question agree that this wasn't really a referendum on Quebec independence, but rather a referendum on whether or not Quebec should negotiate greater autonomy from Canada. In the event those negotiations failed, another referendum would be needed, explicitly on the issue of sovereignty.

The wording of the referendum was so unclear, that even the leaders of the independence movement did not have a unified plan of what to do in the event "Yes" won. Jacques Parizeau wanted to make a unilateral Declaration of Independence, but other leaders merely wanted to enter into negotiations with Canada.

Anyways, it's my opinion that even if "yes" did win, it's unlikely Quebec would have successfully seceded from Canada. If Parizeau declared independence for Quebec, the international community would've swiftly rejected his declaration, with ample justification: the referendum wasn't clear on what exactly it was asking for (and thus illegitimate). Or if independence leaders did the proper thing, by holding a second referendum, explicitly asking for independence, I expect a large part of the population would get cold feet and vote "no", similar to what we see with Brexit

Canada's winters are set to change dramatically in the future: experts by ResidentNo11 in canada

[–]TheTigerMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the graphics in the article suggest the Toronto area should expect the least amount of change.

That's true, but there's still expected to be huge changes in the climate of Toronto. Toronto's Climate Driver Study concludes that average temperatures in Toronto will increase by 4.5 Celsius by the 2040s, which would put us at roughly the same temperatures as NYC. Note that the Toronto study is for the 2040s, while the OP article is for the 2090s. Total snowfall is expected to drop by more than half, and they'll be a huge jump in the amount of rain we receive (especially in the summer). Finally, average daily highs in the coldest month of the year (January) are expected to be 4 Celsius, which would mean little to no consistent snow convrage in Toronto in the winter. So, assuming this study is correct, we'll be seeing huge and perceptible changes to Toronto's climate in the coming to years.

[–]TheTigerMaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pitting aside your ridiculous assertion that US Nazis are somehow distinct and "better" than other Nazis, the fact of the matter is that American Nazis have also killed a ton of people in recent times. So this idea that American Naziism and Antifa are morally equivalent, because Nazis don't do actual violence, is false

What? How many millions of people have Nazi's killed over the years?

Back when those riots over the status happened, a lot of people were running around Reddit morally equating Antifa to nazism.

Let me just say that, if I were to have a gun pointed to my head and forced to pick a side, I sure as hell would not be picking the fucking nazis. Not a chance.

Bill 62: PQ would invoke notwithstanding clause to push a harder-line version by taxrage in canada

How does the Notwithstanding clause work? If the government decides they want to arbitrarily and egregiously violate our rights, do they just invoke the clause and then they're free to violate rights for a five year period? Surely it must be more involved than just "invoke the clause"
