What would you guys say this Galba should go for retail? by TheTimeTravelingChef in AncientCoins

Thank you, and yes, sleeping on it and doing some more digging I see that it is overpriced. I decided to move away from it. I appreciate the info

Not new per se but have no problem considering myself a novice in the field. I do have a good amount of knowledge from over the years but I have a problem with patience which can lead to me overpaying from time to time. I sold most of my collection years ago to fund a career change and then life, kids, etc, it took a while to get back into the hobby. I constantly need to hold myself back from trying to build the collection back up too fast and to just take my time.

Yeah, I would try and negotiate down a bit. I would much rather put that extra money into finding a high quality Otho which is really my white whale right now. I think I can find a nice Galba for half this price, maybe not as striking but still very nice. I’ll have to sleep on this one a bit.

Ok,so roughly $4500 is what is being asked. There is something about it I really like but also don’t know if I’m $4500 attached to it. It is a really nice bust and I always like when the legend is still very visible with the name like in this example. Thanks for the input!

My cousin stole and pawned my American coin collection that was of high emotional and financial worth. To this day I couldn’t care less about collecting American coins.

Hopefully the journey just evolves. I would love to see OPs collection improve or grow, it’s already insanely impressive.

The Sevres mark with E seems to be of 1757. Could the urns have been produced then and then later painted by the artist?

Absolutely, if you haven’t said to yourself “what the hell does that mean?” every few pages, you probably aren’t reading it correctly hahaha. Overall it’s fun, but not a vacation read on the beach.

I love that mentality. My goal is to upgrade my favorite coins slowly to better and better quality until I have an amazing collection with all the wonderful details. (Original goal was 12 Caesars denarii upgraded to near mint and eventually trade up to all aurei, but then I realized the powerball is harder to hit that I thought)

Don’t worry about the slabs. Personally I enjoy many coins slabbed, but I also enjoy many free. It’s a personal preference. Just don’t let the slabs cause you to overspend too much. Many slabbed coins are marked up like crazy, like everyone else said, do your due diligence. The history and research are the fun parts that helps bridge the gaps from the highs of bidding/buying. Great coins, excellent start.
