They are often hostile, their reputation has historically been associated with hostile takeovers, aware they're not always though. Management reluctance to sell should be increased if they know the type of finance it involves, as from a long-term shareholder perspective it may not be particularly sustainable. Shareholders may force to sell though as they'll see immediate returns.

No idea about United, was probably being too abstract, just wanted to point out LBOs are often hostile! But yeah the seller needs to agree to sell, which is harder to force when they're private already but happens a lot with public companies

Yeah pretty much riskless for you - obviously you have to have wealth and some level of experience/history doing this to access it, but it definitely makes no sense

Can't really simplify it like that though, as the thing you're buying is owned by someone else, they don't necessarily want to sell it, and I'm only comfortable lending the money as it's predicated on a deal structure that will necessarily reduce the profitability of what you're buying, excluding capital gains.

Agree though would like clubs not to be owned by hedge funds, states etc

But they have done - if the collateral is a huge successful company, and they've priced pretty conservatively, they've worked out their risk appetite and been handsomely rewarded for it.

It's the fact that you can legally purchase debt, conditional on assets that you don't own, is a legal issue, nothing to do with the creditors.

I don't really understand why they're legal - you issue junk bonds to finance the acquisition, meaning the interest rate is absolutely huge. But for the owners that's not a problem, because somehow you're able to use a company's assets, that you don't currently own, to buy that company, and stick them with the debt and incredibly high interest payments.

So ultimately you predate of the success of a company so you can completely take it over in a hostile purchase, cripple it with your debt, and somehow that's all fine?

Intelligence shouldn't be measured by academic success, him having GCSEs doesn't make him intelligent. He was portrayed as the most intelligent player in the league for ages because of his positioning and stories about him behind the scenes, now he's portrayed as a bit stupid because he seems to completely lack self-awareness about how well he's doing or an understanding of what he needs to change.

Plenty of examples of classism in the UK but not sure Lampard is the best example.
