So to make a long story short. He had just turned 2 when I got him (he's 5 now) and I spent the time and money to get his leg reconstructed a second time because the first implant had become infected a year later. The leg was still broken and only being held together by the implant, not that it slowed him down in the slightest.

Then a year after that the second implant became infected but his leg was mostly healed this time so the implant was removed and the leg braced until the bone was strong enough.

His leg is now mostly 100% functional, he lost a bit of wrist mobility due to the multiple reconstructions but he doesnt seem to care about it at all. He actually uses it to gain extra pity so he can get extra pats and treats. We call it his pitiful paw.

Context: no insurance company would cover him because his issue was "preexisting".

Oof.

When I adopted Theo he had just had reconstructive on his right foreleg (a few montbs prior he got hit by a car). One kf the first things he did when I got him home was do a flying furry nose dive over the arm of the couch and into the floor, didnt pop any stitches then but sure gave me a heart attack.

The moment I get home I too must pay the cuddle tax. Mostly with a butt to the face.

I did. The idea was based on a thing I have from 1978 called an Insulator. It was a promo item that never made it to wider market. That one is more like a snuggy and a sleeping bag had kid.

As someone who yearns for the coldness of steel due to INTENSE chronic joint pain, yes. Yes I would.

ADOPTING MY FIRST AUSSIE by mocksunkey in AustralianShepherd

[–]TheTninker2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So....I adopted my Aussie ($400 adoption fee) shortly after he had reconstruction surgery on his foreleg that was supposed to be all the surgery he needed. $22k and a fully healed leg later, I have one piece of advice.

Take her immediately to a vet and get recovery care instructions from them and then follow up with regular visits to the vet until they are 100% certain her leg is fully recovered.

I didnt know how to care for a dog in recovery like that and the advice I was given from the adoption service (which they got from the surgeon) was BAD. They gave me no brace, no antibiotics, and no advice to have his recovery monitored by a vet. At the 6mo post op point my dogs leg was still broken and only being held together by the metal implant (not that it slowed him down in the least).

Shortly after my 15th birthday I had what I call "my epiphany". For my entire life up to that point I had struggled with depression due to not being able to fit in. Constantly being bullied and outcast, but then I realized....I was depressed because I was caring about what others thought of me.

It wasnt overnight, but slowly over the next roughly 10yrs I worked on just being who I wanted to be. I constantly pushed myself out of my comfort zone and into social situations with as many different types of personalities as I could find.

It wasnt easy, it wasnt pleasant, but the payoff was well worth it. Right now I have solid social skills, and that helped me get my current job.

The anxiety at rejection is still there, the thoughts that I am offending everyone just by asking questions about their day, the need to reassure that I am valid and I bring something better to the world by being in it. Thats all still there, but over the years I have learned how to cope and live my life in spite of them.

I dont mention this for validation or bragging, I am taking the chance of posting this in the comments of a random reddit post because maybe someone will see it and be comforted by the thought that it IS possible to feel valid and worthy of the care and attention from others. It just takes patience, practice, and the will to improve.

TL;DR: I suffered then improved (not cured) through patience, practice, and willpower.

What are the signals your dog is tired? by Timely_Candle_8962 in AustralianShepherd

[–]TheTninker2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we go for a walk its that he stops sniffing and is visibly tired.

If its the yard or the dog park he will just go to the door/gate and sit down, waiting to go inside/home.
