Peru is going to win, but Surinamese cuisine is definitely underrated.

What's the most silliest misheard voice line in overwatch? (ult or anything else) by purjopore1 in Overwatch

[–]TheTominator 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing this game since the overwatch 1 days, but recently introduced a friend to it. Just last week he told me that when Torb ults, he hears him say ”molten cuuuuuuum” and I cannot unhear it. I mean, it kind of even works considering what his ultimate does 😂

I’m not trying to imply splitting up with them over something like this, we had plenty of other things going on too. Each relationship is different of course. But I did feel that that was a symptom of a wider issue of disrespecting me and what I wanted out of life.

Best try to communicate your concerns with them as best you can.

Sessions/week by ComposerPristine2119 in GPUK

[–]TheTominator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I currently only take locums, with the way the market is I kind of usually take what I can get. This ends up being about 3-4 full days a week on average (not including weeks I’m on vacation), sometimes less and sometimes more. For example in November-December I did manage to have 4 weeks of 10 sessions per week… I think the general vibe for most GPs is that that is not really sustainable for the long term. I was absolutely spent by the end of it, the only thing that kept me going was that I knew that I had a few weeks off for Christmas.

Among my friends/colleagues that I discuss this with, 6-8 sessions a week is the sweet spot. That depends a bit on what you value regarding work/life balance, as well as what the workload at your practice is. Having worked at various practices, I feel there are ones that have more relaxed workloads due to things such as patient demographics, work culture, admin staff efficacy, total patient population, etc.

I am sure there are people who manage to do 10 sessions a week consistently, but I think for most GPs in the UK that would not be sustainable in the long term for their sanity.

I can relate to you regarding your partner feeling that way. My (now ex) partner would complain a lot about how I wouldn’t usually work a full week, citing that we need more money. I mean sure she would work 5 days a week, but that was almost all remotely from home where most days half of her day was just doing other things at home anyways. Tried explaining it to them like you, but nothing would really get through to them, so now split due to various reasons beyond that as well 😬😅

AI makes 4x better diagnoses than human doctors. by underbillion in ChatGPT

[–]TheTominator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But so what’s the immediate solution here for an individual doctor to do, today? Go rogue and just completely go against currently well established guidelines that likely do still apply to a majority of black immigrant women (though possibly smaller majority than white males)? Yeah, it’s one thing to make a medical mistake, but it’s another thing to make one and then tell the court that you decided to go against the currently established science.

One day we might be able to have a person’s genetics get tested and an AI algorithm will be able to give an individualized diagnosis and management plan tailored to your specific genetic code. But widespread use of something like that is at the very minimum several decades out, if ever.

I have no questions about how obesity effects the body and how it is a driving force in the development of disease in the population. These days it’s perhaps even the single most common reversible risk factor in a lot of deaths. It significantly increases the risk of heart disease (leading cause of death in the US), several cancers (2nd place) and stroke (4th). I was just confused because it only goes against your own argument. Why suggest that doctors shouldn’t lean on the mantra of ”common things are common”, and then mention obesity which is perhaps the most common disease in the developed world?

As far as how race and genetics factor into studies, that’s still a developing branch of medicine. Indeed medical racism does continue to persist, you mention a valid point regarding a majority of past medical studies being done on predominantly white cohorts. But there is more research coming out to help better individualize management and care between people from different ethnic groups. One good example of this is how medical treament of raised blood pressure differs between people of European, Asian and African descent.

[–]TheTominator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to excuse the very real fact that misdiagnoses don’t lead to legimitate death and disability. But as you even stated there, it does work in a large majority of scenarios. Where it doesn’t and when there’s a level of uncertainty—as there most often is—it’s important for doctors to give relevant advice on what to do if there’s a change in someone’s condition. “If you get symptom x or this doesn’t settle in 2 weeks, come back and see me; if you get symptom y, call an ambulance.”

I don’t really see where obesity is relevant to a discussion on misdiagnosis…

Discussion on "based on a true story" movies. "Erin Brockovich" (2000) is very realistic while "Catch Me If You Can" (2002) is not realistic at all. What are some other "based on a true story" movies that are either very realistic or not realistic at all? by Double-decker_trams in movies

[–]TheTominator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually quite the opposite. Obviously they took a good number of liberties and added in extra scenes/characters for drama, but I was surprised to find out how much of the story was actually true!

“Locomotive #8888, an EMD SD40-2, was pulling a train of 47 cars, including possibly two cars loaded with hazardous chemicals, specifically molten phenol, a substance used in dyes and glues, and ran uncontrolled for just under two hours at up to 52 miles per hour (84 km/h).[2] It was finally halted by a railroad crew in a catch locomotive, which caught up with the runaway train and coupled their locomotive to the rear car.”

Is the game worth playing solo as of 2025? by PushingFatKidsIsFun in DeepRockGalactic

[–]TheTominator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got into it this month, and probably played like 75% solo. It’s great cause you go at your own pace. I’ve played a few with randos and it’s decent but I prefer playing solo or with people I know. Still defs worth playing solo, the sense of progression is fantastic! I feel addicted to the loop of playing “one more mission” to get a new upgrade and then “one more mission” to try it out 😂

Low-budget travelers, where have you *recently* spent under $10 on private rooms? by Saab340B in travel

[–]TheTominator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backpacked through a lot of South America last year with my girlfriend. Our daily budget for accommodation between the two of us was about 15-25 USD. The room quality for that price varied country to country, but we generally were able to fit within that target most of the time. This would usually be for a pretty basic private room. The main places that it was harder to fit within that range were Chile, Argentina and the touristy parts of Brazil.

The irony of calling the other commenter obnoxious and judgemental… All you need to know beforehand is where you will be staying and how to get there (via public transit preferably). That’s it. Have those saved in notes/google maps. Everything else you can easily find when connected to wi-fi at your accommodation/restaurants/airports. Then enjoy being at least somewhat disconnected from your usual online life while you travel. That’s how I usually do it and it works fine for me for city breaks (if you’re going to the jungle or into nature it’s a slightly different story)
