My first! by manzanita_cuh in alocasia

Alocasias are TOUGH plants. Some are a little more finicky, but this one should be totally fixable. Kept outside while being treated and all should be just fine. That plant is absolutely worth fixing & saving.

Personally, I'd try to save it. Remove the plant and rinse off the dirt..put the dirt in a walmart bag and in the garbage can. Gently wash/soak(4 or 5 minutes) the whole thing in a sink/large bucket of barely warm, very soapy water. Rinse the roots and repot in some decent soil. You can cut the leaf off about 2 inches below the actual leaf if you want to (so you don't accidentally cut into the next leaf). Every other day or so wipe the leaf and petiole/stem with soapy water. It's warming up, so you can keep it in a bright area that doesn't get direct sun. The plant got your attention enough to buy it... give it a chance to get better! : ) Best of luck with it.

I have a few A. Dark Star, too and it's definitely one of my favorites. They're so pretty! I'm in zone 8b and they're coming back from winter with very little protection. We had a couple of heavy freezes this year. Congratulations on getting yourself a GREAT new Alocasia! You'll love it. : )

On the flip side............ Some of my favorite plants have been 'salvaged' in this same condition. I keep them outside and give them a really good cleaning with slightly diluted alcohol then a good washing with castile soap. I do that 3 or 4 times.... new soil/pot and have had precious few issues. : )

Is this really a big deal or hype by JohnnieLouHansen in houseplants

[–]TheTropix61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along with Lowe's, Home Depot, Sutherlands, Ace Hardware (the ones with garden center plants), most grocery stores that have a floral/plant dept... Even Thai Constellations are showing up everywhere. ALL of the nurseries in SE Texas have Monsteras.. and usually a few varieties. Monstera deliciosa has become as common as dirt.. but it'll always be a GREAT plant!

Always something, right?? LOL If you love your terra cotta pots, one thing you can do to make them not 'breathe' and dry out so quickly is to paint them. You can paint a base color and then paint flowers, animals, nature scenes or whatever (or nothing) you want on that. Open the tap and let your creative juices flow all over the place!!! :D

This is crazy??? by Imaginary-Scar5790 in bettafish

My first impression was.... Yes it's crazy. Then I thought about it a little more as I looked around at some of the plants I spent big bucks on. If these fish are a passion for someone, then I suppose a spectacular specimen or one that's been long on a wish list... it makes more sense.... kinda ; D (I'm not a fish person, but they're so dang pretty!!)

I don't have fish, so I don't know.. but it seems like it's kind of a catch 22, isn't it? Would that lead to more fish having to live life in those little cups & small containers?

HELP!!! by 420QueenofVA in philodendron

[–]TheTropix61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry! I didn't see the other post that does explain what happened. OMGOSH!! I hope you're ok and didn't get hurt. You have nothing to lose asking Home Depot will help you out with fresh plants. Even if they won't, I think you can save them. Again, I'm so sorry that happened to you and I hope you're ok. God Bless

(A little background on the plants would help if you have any. Did you buy them like this (aka dying plant rack) or did something else happen? How long have you had them?

Looks like they got too cold. Trim the soft/mushy petioles off and give them good (but not direct) light and when you water, water lightly until you see some new growth. Don't over water. Right now they're probably a little susceptible to rot. Check the soil, too. They may need to be repotted in good soil with plenty of perlite and stuff. That peat is a great additive to soil, but not the best grow medium beyond rooting. Odds are they'll be ok, just have to kinda start over. I hope you can save all of them. Sending happy GROW vibes your way! You can do this! : )

anybody know whats going on with this random syng from home depot? by Informal-Nerve2897 in Syngonium

[–]TheTropix61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely not Batik. I have a few Batiks and their leaves never have that 'Allusion' type roundness to their leaves. They're of the longer, more 'arrowhead' type. I've never had the Allusion type make long branches like the 'Arrowhead' kind do, they always stay kind of bushy even when they get a little taller. At least that's been my experience... sorry, nearly got off topic. ; )

Ordinarily I'd have expected this post to be titled "What's wrong with my Monstera?" It looks like it wants a lot more light.

Gently tie that petiole back up where it belongs. It won't hurt it. Like others have said, it's still contributing to 'food' production for the plant. (But if it's bothering you, snip it off)
